They (correctly) call for MPs to recuse themselves from deciding election rules and set up a permanent, independent, and nonpartisan body to take responsibility. Most popular seems to be a “[citizens’ assembly](https://www.fairvote.ca/citizensassemblies/)” (a relatively large group of voters appointed at random) 

An analogous thing was done with riding boundaries in the 1950s: politicians were in charge and we had gerrymandering, then they recused themselves and passed it to independent boundary commissions and voila! No more gerrymandering.

I'm on the longest ballot mailing list and helped collect thousands of nomination signatures in Winnipeg when they did it here in 2023.

In Australia as well we set up voting botohs in the middle of nowehre.  Not sure of the mximum distance, but do know there's some islands and remote communities which will still have a polling booth set up ready to go on election day.

Here in Indonesia as well. In a dense place like Jakarta, there might even be a polling stations not more than a kilometer from one another. This is due to that there can be no more than 500 voters per station.

Voting day on presidential and provincial elections, depending on company policies, are days off. At the least half a day off .

Few facts:
1. There are tiny government schools everywhere in rural India, so yes, its possible to find a government building every 2 kilometres. 

2. An ID card is required because we still have problems of voter fraud and double voting. Usually its a voter ID card but if someone doesn't have that, they can use any other govt issues ID including PAN card, driving licence or even birth certificate. People don't need to put any effort to get registered to vote an d get a voter ID. Every few months, a govt employee would go door to door with a list of registered voters, and make changes, i.e. register new voters, and remove dead/relocated people. And after a few days, deliver the new voter ID card to those people at home.

3. All govt employees have in their life have gone through mandatory voting duties. There is no way to escape this. 

4. The "setting up polling booth for a single person" is usually for the lone forest ranger in some of its the protected national forests. And depending upon the terrain, these govt employees may take vehicles, bicycles, boats or even elephants, camels or donkeys and sometimes even trek miles on foot to reach remote villages - be it dense forests of the North-east, desserts of Rajasthan, tiny islands on the coast of West Bengal, or remote villages in the Himalayas

5. All elections - Central (federal), state and local bodies are paid holidays. Not adhering to this rule can land the organisation in big trouble. For essential services and businesses, they have to provide atleast a half-day leave so that every employee can go vote and come back.

Watch the movie Newton. It is a fantastic satire on this concept. Election duty when assigned cannot be wished away. Govt servants like teachers, civil servants are chosen and nearly impossible to escape. This is the magic of Indian democracy. Election booths have been set up in the farthest corners of forests, mountains , islands.

The Election Commission of India is a truly fantastic body.

For most people the results are "closer than expected", especially since a lot of BJP supporters were going around with their "400+" thing. It felt like it was possible if you were just scrolling through Twitter, Instagram and Reddit for all the news. Looking at the actual ground reality it was obvious this was about to happen.

Ok, this is facinating.  After watching the John Oliver piece and the NPR sunday story it seemed like a lot of BJP political opponents and critics were being put in jail.  the NPR piece talked about a 80 year old jesuit priest who was accused of trying to assisinate the prime minister on what seemed to be trumped up charges.

With all of that info I was expecting something like the Russian "elections" here but that's clearly not the case.

Is this like the parliamentry system in Canada (sorry I don't know international politics very well) where you just need to get over 50% to be able to do whatever you want?

EDIT: Everyone is going on about John Oliver, but I thought his piece was more toned down than the NPR piece.  He only talked about Hindu Nationalism and Modi's antimuslim retoric.  He only showed one clip about a politician who joined the BJP so that he wouldn't be arrested on trumped up charges. For those who didn't understand what happened here-  
India has a multiparty system but there are two major political outfits: BJP(centre-right to extreme-right, Modi's party) and INC or Congress (Centre-left).  
The current election was for the 543 seats of the lower house of Parliament(imagine US House of Representatives).  
For any party/coalition to win, they need more than half of the total seats that is more than 272.   
BJP leads the NDA coalition(orange), INC leads the INDIA coalition(blue).   
In 2019, BJP was able to win 272 seats on its own. This time they haven't, only winning 240.  
Last 5 years, BJP could do whatever it wanted just because of its sheer parliamentary majority. Now with this result, they will have to rely on their coalition partners TDP and JDU(both are regional parties).  Both parties are know to jump ship whenever they find it favorable.   
For the opposing INDIA alliance, it was very positive for them.  
They beat the BJP to a stalemate in Uttar Pradesh(considered as the stronghold of the BJP), won more seats in Maharashtra(another BJP stronghold) and did well in a lot of places they weren't expected to.

This message is reflected in numbers. When a leader has 303 seats, asks for 370 seats, gets 240 seats, and needs 272 seats, it cannot but be seen as a message from voters that they want the leader to govern — but in a different style. It also means that voters don’t think that the leader needs a bigger mandate to deliver. The numbers dictate collaboration with leaders and formations that are outside the BJP fold. They will inevitably result in a weaker political executive — and that’s not necessarily bad, for a decade of an overwhelmingly strong executive has resulted in the weakening of all other arms of government and institutions. A mandate such as this will result in these other institutions finding a voice and Modi having to reorient his governance style to take into account these voices. This mandate, therefore, is a call for “santulan”, balance; it is a call for “sayyam”, restraint; and it is a call for respect for institutional autonomy.



The final political message of this mandate is that while democracy is about contestation and debate and non-violent articulation of policy battles in the public sphere, it is also about accommodation and consultation. India’s public sphere is deeply polarised on partisan and ideological lines; social media and news television discourse, which unfortunately play a disproportionately large part in setting the everyday political agenda, is vitiated beyond repair; there is a fierce sense of zero sum competition among parties; the old norms of cross-party dialogue and cordiality even in Parliament is all but over; leaders have brought their political divides and made it personal with constant vendetta; and the executive arm uses and misuses agencies to hound rivals.



This mandate is a message to all parties in general but the BJP in particular that voters want democratic competition within the architecture of democratic accommodation. The mandate is such that no party can be unilateral in its approach. The BJP will have to listen to allies before taking major steps, the Congress will have to consult its own partners before embarking on a political programme if it wants it to be broad-based even as an opposition. Certain issues, for instance the border conflict with China, may require a sense of bipartisanship that has been missing. And parliament may need to become the forum once again for deliberative lawmaking rather than the executive ramming down its agenda.



Put together and it is important for all parties to read the mandate with a sense of responsibility. Voters haven’t rejected the BJP or endorsed the Congress or made a set of regional parties the custodian of the Indian state, but neither have voters given the BJP a blank cheque to govern or the Congress untrammelled room to obstruct or the space to exclude regional parties from national decision making. It is this spirit of the message of 2024 that needs to be heard in the corridors of Delhi.
