I'm not wild about turning every foreign issue into a domestic issue but I'm not keen to see Modi there. He's shown nothing but contempt for Canada, has killed Canadians, and has sought to interfere in our political process. And last I checked, India's not in the G7 and it's our prerogative as host to invite non-members. 

If he comes, he's going to be wagging his finger on our faces about how we're not turning HIS domestic problems into our own problems--which is what he wants. He wants us to hand over Canadians who, without proof, he calls terrorists. Or stifle their freedom of expression.

Canada is dealing with NATO issues, coordinating a European response to the insular Trump Administration, and looking at future of Eastern Europe...There is no time for India right now...a country who's fake student average Canadians believe are are currently overtaxing our immigration system. On the world stage, India is seen as being too fawning in its relationship with Donald Trump, to eager to place arms purchases over much needed social development, and too stubborn to resolve border issues with Pakistan and China. Canada politics is totally taken over by Khalistani separatists. Even if the earlier fiasco didn't happen, the Indian delegation would face a lot of harassment. Even if the Indian PM isn't called to G7 outreach, it won't affect India much. The individual bilateral relations with the rest of G7 would continue as they were before. And Canada neither is a large trade partner for India nor do they have enough leverage to dictate the direction of the rest of the G7 countries. 

This isn't big enough of a deal. While I do agree that India should have shown better restraint and tactics to deal with the Khalistan issues, there's a limit to how much you allow a foreign entity to harass your country and countrymen in the guise of freedom of speech.

G20 makes a bit more sense, but even then I think ALL those mega-summits should end. Probably more because of the accusation of a Canadian citizen being killed by Indian intelligence, not so much because of “separatist sympathies”. Would any government, after accusing another of killing one of its citizens, invite said government to a summit? Forget about Canada or India for a second, leaving aside what the assassinated person was accused of doing and his separatist ideologies. This isn’t all that surprising at the end of the day.

I understand that the Sikh voting bloc is significant, but this is still a silly move. The mathematics of the Khalistan movement are nonsensical. Too many Hindus and Muslims reside in Punjab, and they are not going to want to be subjugated to a Sikh-style theocratic state.

Doubt Modi would've gone even if he got invited due to security concerns and protests everywhere he went.

The problem, however, is it'll be framed as a unified unfriendly stance towards India from the West now. Probably bad timing just when Russia offered India its Su-57 with source code transfer and the West doesn't want more money in Russia's war coffers. 

It had probably been weighing those and whatever the US offered, but I think this just got Russia the deal.

Hopefully the West can understand and avoid throwing a hissy fit when that deal inevitably comes to fruition now though.
