u.s. has dropped many in the same place during many of their exercises in the region as well (especially the recent exercises with japan). they also have unmanned underwater vehicle that patrol and collect data under the sea (many chinese fishermen have picked up these devices while out at sea).

Edit: It's dimensions are roughly the size of a Gerard R Ford class aircraft carrier, meaning the ship could probably carry around 75 aircraft of various types. Armament seems to include two sets of 12 missile launchers (probably SAM's or missile interceptors) as well as at least one laser CIWS turret.

Honestly, this would be better as an armament ship. While nuke subs are good deterrant, a sub full of swarmer missles with high yield payloads would be a better shore bombardment idea. Even a drone carrier would be a better idea because of the recon/ewar capabilities.

G Harry Stine did a trilogy of novels called Starsea Invaders where the protagonists served on the USS Shenandoah, a USN submersible aircraft carrier that seemed like a cross between the *Seaquest* from Seaquest DSV and a Nimitz class carrier.  The books were pretty typical of 80s-90's military sci-fi and are hard to find these days.  They were fun and the pic OP posted definitely made me think of those books.

The book titles were First Action, Second Contact and Third Encounter.  Aliens invade Earth's oceans.  Fun stuff!

Can I just say Fuck This. I was a Sonar Technician in the Navy from 2006-2010. Secret Clearance and all. I've seen the data that allegedly taken from training and other war game events. This is fucked up.

We had a notebook page of paper that had limited but still secret information that managed to escape our security vault. We recalled our entire division, including folks on leave, because anyone having even the slightest inkling to what was on that page, it would be a national security threat. We eventually found it because some OS stuck it in a folder like a dum-dum. But we got threatened with brig time and restriction for a peice of paper.

Now this? Does it even fucking matter anymore?

FOX will find a good spin for this.  Trump will reward Xi for "being so smart" and insult US Navy for being weak and inferior to Chinese spies.

The sea dragon is a massive missile that has the advantage of being able to be launched while the submarine is still submerged without giving away it's position as it might do if it had to launch only when at the surface of the water. It also follows a typical torpedo trajectory at first (propelling parallel in reference to the planet's outer mantle) and then corrects itself after a given distance as to further obfuscate the location of the sub launching this missile. It's 3-stage propulsion system switches once the missile breaks the plane of the water and enters the atmosphere. It will climb until it reaches a height of LEO or low earth orbit, making it very difficult to shoot down at this height. It will then redirect it's path towards it's target. Unlike nuclear weapons, even though this does seem to have a large payload, it doesn't require so many people coordinating as we often see as extra levels of security we often see with nukes. 
  
Now I don't know if they were just looking around and data mining or they ultimately have a backdoor that can give them admin control over them or simply the locations of the subs or what their current deployments are and goals. Just because they aren't nukes, the uncertainty of living in a world of cyberwarfare raging 24/7 is very unnerving when you don't know what you don't know.

Looks like a training torpedo, as it was found floating in the water. Training torpedoes are made to be recovered and reused, but they must have not been able to recover this one. It doesn't look like it has been too long at sea. It's in good condition and has minimal marine growth.
