From personal experience, easily Taiwan. 

Tech driven economy but with substantial manufacturing power. Socially they are Chinese culture that avoided the cultural revolution and looks, sounds and feels a lot like Indian. Several parts of Taipei feel like Mumbai or Delhi. Temples there are eerily like Indian ones, more so than Japanese ones. Brilliant cuisine. 

Having had both friendships and relationships with Taiwanese, their family and social structure and expectations mirror Indian ones. Kids from both groups tend to top academia in the US, both groups are over represented in similar industries and both sit at the top of the median personal and household income charts. 

They are culturally conservative - cherishing and intent on preserving original Chinese culture - but socially liberal. Both countries have dominant political bases that sit on a spectrum of liberal conservatism as a result. Taiwanese politics are tricky because the nominal conservatives are Sinocentric, while the progressives are simultaneously Taiwanese nationalists. There’s no easy fit here. 

Overall, it’s the first and probably only place where I felt “this could be what India is like when it’s more developed”. Maybe Singapore too but that place is just too artificially maintained. Thailand is a useful waypoint but their politics are completely different. Japan is too unique - and I say this tho my wife is from there. The west is a completely different entity from India.

It won’t resemble any nation. It will be similar to the EU economically and ideologically given the diversity of languages , history and culture. We will continue to have hyper developed states like Germany and then states with different ideologies such a Hungary. Just like the EU, states will continue to have strong regional identity with varying political leanings. The difference will be centrally managed defense and foreign policy, which can be similar to the US 

China is big and as diverse. But their strategy has been to make it homogeneous and enforce one National identity. India will never (I hope) will do that. It will continue to be messy and frustrating , again, just like how EU functions.

With our population density, we would look more like Japan or South Korea than US or Canada. Even Europe could resemble us but never the USA. US has plenty of land and copy paste wide roads and very large houses (same in Canada) which is not the case anywhere else in the world. Population density is pretty low in settler countries like US/CAD/AUS.

Honestly, if Bharat were a fully developed country, I wouldn’t compare it directly to any existing nation. But if I had to, I’d say a balanced fusion of Japan, Switzerland, and ancient India.

Like Japan, we’d be technologically advanced while preserving our cultural roots, language, and discipline.

Like Switzerland, we’d maintain political neutrality, focus on internal development, and ensure high quality of life with decentralized governance.

But most importantly, unlike any current country, we’d revive the best aspects of ancient Bharat—a Sanskrit-based Gurukul system, practical knowledge, self-reliant villages, emotional bonding between guru and shishya, and respect for dharma over politics.

So I don’t want Bharat to 'resemble' any other nation. I want Bharat to lead the world as its own original model—spiritually rich, scientifically brilliant, and socially just.

The Saffron Tide, The Verdict and Seven decades of Independent India. My aunt recommended these books to me haven’t gotten around to reading them. She majored in political science. There is a book about the emergency too which might give you a glimpse of what India was like under Indira Gandhi. In 1991 India opened became a “open market” and there are good books and resources about it.

As a Pol-Sci major, your requirements will be different than what a casual reader on reddit would recommend. I'd say just email Ramachandra Guha himself with clear outline of what era you wish to explore (his email is available online in multiple places and he is quite helpful/responsive from what I've heard from my friends)

A few that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere but still are fantastic reads are:

* **Army and the Nation by Steven Wilkinson**: - In a region that was governed by the British and with a military educated in England, India is the only country to not have had a coup so far. This book looks at how the founding fathers took measures to ensure there wouldn't be one. 
* **Anything by Manu S Pillai**: Pillai doesn't write contemporary history. His books tend to revolve more around pre-Independence India especially the Princely States era but amazing reads nevertheless.
* **Whole Numbers and Half Truths by Rukmini S:** You'll see a lot of numbers being thrown about in the news -- about rapes, police inactions, voting trends, literacy rates. This stats-first book digs deeper into every data point and how we got there.
*  **Price of Modi Years by Aakar Patel**: Employment is High, Inflation is low. Great days are here. But are they? This book details the history of India since Modi came to power for the first time in 2014 and its growth/lack thereof since. 
* **The Caravan Book of Profiles:** So bit of an oddball, but there are two profiles I feel are absolutely worth reading to get an understanding of the political scene here. Caravan's profile on Raghuram Rajan, ex-Governor of RBI and Arun Jaitley, ex-Finance Minister who drafted the infamous Electoral Bonds bill that's made completely opaque Indian election financing. 
* **An Economic History of India by Tirthankar Roy**: This is on my to-read list but it is supposed to explore India's economic policy transition across the ages from 18th Century to today.
* **A Paradoxical Prime Minister by Shashi Tharoor**: Bias Warning: Tharoor is a minister on the opposition party but this book examines Modi and his achievements in a lens that is different from what most mainstream media today would provide so worth reading for that reason. Tharoor is also highly educated and insanely well-read unlike the subject of his book's attentions. 
* **Changing India by Dr. Manmohan Singh**: A 6-volume work by India's ex-Finance Minister/Prime Minister who was responsible for the liberalization of the markets and pulling India out of license raj. Man was in the Congress party (currently the opposition) just so you know where the bias will be.  

**A small note on the state of politics here:** 
The Republican and Democratic party are both considerably to the right of India's political spectrum. India's constitution makes it clear that India is a "Socialist Republic" and so both - the political parties within India AND the media criticizing them tend to be much much further to the left here than what you might be used to there. Abortions are protected by law, children get free meals at school, transportation is free for women in some states to drive up participation in the workforce etc. 

So the divide tends to be more along religious/caste/ideological lines rather than fiscal, economic, foreign, or civil policy. Identity-based politics with an emphasis on caste is still prevalent. So, the media are divided into two broad categories:

* Those who lean toward identity-based (or conservative) politics and support BJP
* Those who lean toward policy-based (or liberal) politics and therefore end up criticizing everyone 

[Pretty much any outfit owned by Adani or Ambani here + The Times Group](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_news_media_ownership_in_India) is going to have a pro-incumbent slant right now. 

For anti-incumbent slant, I'd recommend Caravan, The Wire, The Telegraph, Scroll (to some degree), the Seen and Unseen podcast (which has some policy makers/economists/leaders across the spectrum commenting on contemporary affairs) 

The Hindu used to be good at independent reporting, but huge internal politics, disastrous attempt at digitization, and loss of quite a few good reporters has made them a very middling media outfit with no strong opinions or voice at all. I feel now they are less willing to poke anything for fear of waking the Enforcement Directorate bear now.

 India After Gandhi by Ramachandra Guha  is good book but it's oriented more toward a historical narrative. Maybe you should check out works of Pratap Bhanu Mehta, he has edited Oxford handbooks for both Indian constitution and companion to politics in India, he has authored couple of other books on public institutions and democracy.If you're more into Political theory/Philosophy there's a book by political theorist Madhav Khosla titled "India's founding moment" , rest for current events you can follow up 'IndianExpress' and 'The Hindu', also there's a well known weekly 'Economic and Political Weekly'.

I was a 90s kid, we struggled with potholes and power cuts back then. We still struggle with them today...in some cases it has come down from 10 hour cuts to 1-2 hours....but it's already 20+ years since then.

Problem is India never capitalised on any opportunity unlike China and other Asian nations! When the world is looking to find ways to get rid of China. The Indian government failed to invite any major FII’s into the country and also bring in large scale technical manufacturing of components in various industries. 

Additionally, the income divide has got so bad that majority of the companies in India only target the top 3% of India and not the rest of them. That means unless you aren’t earning a minimum of 25k a month…you are as good as dead to Indian firms and the government and simply human meat (disposable tissue paper). This tissue paper is used for communal violence, bigotry and other distractions to just ensure that citizens don’t focus on the real issues of our country. The middle class has been overburdened through taxation which is regressive in this country.

I'm 35 years old and lived in a small town in Maharashtra. 
And yes, I completely echo with your sentiments. 
Just to speak even today, there was a power cut for 3 hours. 
Before every monsoon, they repair roads and during raining we get new potholes.
I somehow feel that most of the people I live with have very fake pride of our country and its culture cause they don't like any sort of constructive criticism.
My place is around 70km away from Mumbai and I could say some things got better there but some got worse. 
I still don't understand how ministers in India don't feel ashamed when they invite foreign delegates to Mumbai as a commerical capital because even the roads aren't good!
At least the place I live has progressed very little. and I believe India will grow at very low pace.

Just addressing your electricity concerns. India has enough generating and transmission capacity. If you are experiencing power cuts, and load shedding, this is entirely due to your local electric company (like Karnataka Electricity board in Karnataka) not buying enough power to meet the demand. A lot of states have free power schemes which hits there revenue hard and they don't have money to buy power at the market rates. This is not a problem that the India can solve at centrally, it can only be solved by local state electricity boards

Completely different for me. My city has developed so much in past 20 years. Have new renovated railway station and new domestic airport now. It's well connected now because of a newly developed expressway. It hardly takes 2.5 hours to go to my hometown. Previously it used to take us 6 hours. We also got a new cancer hospital. My own relatives are getting treatment there.

For that bank fraud, call your bank and tell them about it. Those bank officials can actually reverse the payment. Mail the branch manager about it they don't do anything to help you, you can go to RBI's Ombudsman website and file a complaint. Trust me, that'll really work.

True. We need to strengthen our institutions so they're not susceptible to populism or people in power or greed.

We need to do this not just with changes to our laws and amendments to our constitution but also by educating our people on constitutional values. Until our people learn discipline and some constitutional values nothing will change.

Both political parties and citizens have misplaced priorities, and political parties exploit this. Unless and until the majority of people start voting for development (not for caste, not for religious inclination, not for freebies), we will continue to remain stuck.

India has the potential to become a superpower, but a few powerful individuals do not want Indians to truly prosper. They thrive on keeping the common population in a state of insecurity, so they can continue their pursuits unchecked and accumulate more wealth. Sadly, I fear that many Indians will never realize this.

And India is not the only country suffering from such issues. Nations like the US, South Africa, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan also struggle with one form or another of polarization. But a country like the US can afford it.

1) Too much power too little accountability attracts power hungry aspirants, the best leaders are always those who do not wish to be leaders but have to be. It's the exact opposite here, these people actively seek power for the sake of it. To intimidate and belittle the general population. Too little accountability enables massive corruption under the table. They have been looting the country for decades now and are addicted to their powers and hence resist any change. 


2) Introduction of accountability, transperancy and performance based promotion or termination, that will clear the rot and keep the employment flowing and they can be held accountable publicly. Those found corrupt like immensely corrupt should be put away for life. Assets seized and their immediate decendents should be denied all govt schemes like scholarships. And those that are honest and act in the best interest of the country should be promoted and celebrated. 


3) All the beurocratic rot should be cleaned and automation and less human interference should be established. 


And those who justify corruption saying why it is essential and keeps the country running. Are probably deep into corruption and are good candidates for anti corruption to look into. The system is so deeply corrupt that abolishing it and redesigning the system that keeps the best interests of our country at heart is required unlike the present system which keeps the best interests of colonialist masters best interests at heart.

1) Simultaneous polls - MONUMENTALLY STUPID IDEA. What happens when the state assemby gets a hung result. What happens when the lok sabha gets a hung parliament and goes for another election next year? These are problems you need to consider before doing something so stupid. Simultaneous polls work in a presidential system when the president/state governors have absolute power over the executive and the legislature would be a moot point. America is lucky that it is a two party country, otherwise diverse political interests would have made sure no coalition would ever get a majority in the legislature. 

2) Anti-defection - There is nothing wrong with defection. The voters should have given the government an iron clad majority if they were that confident. The reason a few MLAs can collapse the government is because the voters gave them a razor thin majority to begin with.

Unpopular opinion but the whole IAS selection procedure is kinda dumb. I mean you are selecting people who just have prepared for 3-4 years going through books with out any real world work experience. Majority of people are in it for corrupt money and prestige/status that comes with it.

I agree with the other commentator that only way to bring about change (other than the way you have mentioned is) become so rich that you can control politicians directly like Ambanis and Adanis do. Or social engineer our entire society and ecosystem. 

I just personally think that billionaires are just morally corrupt people much more so than average people. They are in it for money even all the philanthropy that you see is just to cover up their dirty deeds. I guess money corrupts your conscience even if you start out with good intentions. Who the fucks recommending IAS ? The executive are an extention of legislature. What you want to go in is judiciary in order to operate seperately from legislature. It's true there's corruption in judiciary but that's by choice. The system has been designed to make judiciary independent not executive. Get a law degree, give judiciary exam, become a judge and take suo Motu over matter you want to change and judge according to your will. Once you're in supreme court, not even the PM can challenge you
