Public sentiment regarding India's counter-terrorism efforts is largely critical, with many expressing frustration over perceived ineffectiveness and propagandistic narratives. While some recognize the necessity for strong collaboration against terrorism, significant skepticism persists due to recent controversies involving extrajudicial actions. Many commenters show pride in Pakistan's stance and disappointment in India’s political leadership and media portrayal.

There are multiple factors. I'll list them all out below. However, before I do so, a caveat, there is still a low level insurgency in Kashmir - so attacks and deaths are still common there (albiet a lot lesser than they used to be).

(a) Competence: at its peak in the 90s, the Pakistanis were able to re-route the surplus mujahideen and arms from Afghanistan into India. The Indian army at that point in time was caught up with another anti-insurgency operation in Assam called Op Rhino and did not have enough resoruces to allocate to this new problem (you need to remember the Soviet Union - India's closest ally at the time had recently collapsed and the Indian economy was cratering). So they threw ill-equipped and ill-trained men at the problem which led to high casualties which encouraged further attacks and cross-border insurgency from Pakistan. 

This problem got addressed gradually, Indian army set up something called the Rashtriya Rifles which are grid based permnanent counter-insurgency units which means they can leverage local intelligence consistently. Other competencies like using jammers to block IEDs and equipment also have become better over time - which has made the Indian army very good at dealing with insurgents.

  
(b) fencing the border with Pakistan: India took all the tech Israel uses to monitor its borders and applied it to the India Pakistan border. This means that cross-border infiltration by militants is almost negligible/ as is arms trafficking, making the problem in India a lot more manageable. We still have the same issues the Israelis have with the Pakistanis digging tunnels but because the soil in Kashmir is very rocky, harder to build long tunnels.

  
(c) Pakistan went broke: Pakistan's economy is in the shitter and they aren't getting any more funds from the US, so they can't allocate that much money to train terrorists and arm them. 

  
(d) Pakistan is wary: the militants the Pakistanis trained turned on them, so they don't want to empower these people all that much anymore. 

  
(e) India's ability to retaliate: there was a terror attack in India in Uri, in response to which India instigated a cross-border operation in Pakistan using its speacial forces. India has thus, demonstrated the ability to retaliate to Pakistani actions whilst keeping the conflict from going nuclear. 

(f) Domestic terror: organisations like the SIMI, IM etc. which were involved in domestic acts of terror have been wiped out. India has some insanely restrictive national security laws and put them to use annihilating domestic terror organisations. Now, surveillance and intelligence internally is very strong and terror acts are unlikely to happen because of how limited access to weapons and explosives is.

India has been able to avoid terror attacks only in the last decade and that too in interior of the country and not on the frontier states like Kashmir and north east. Two reasons for the terror attacks in india were homegrown terror outfits and Pakistan based ones. The homegrown terror outfits were effectively neutralises after Indian Mujahideen was neutralised and then Modi's policy of not interacting with Pakistan to initiate peace process with Pakistan effectively neutralised Pakistan based terror groups incentive to launch big attacks on mainland India.

One simple reason.  Under Modi India is willing to strike back and strike back hard. Till 2014, Indians refused to cross the border and attack, even when Pakistan was directly linked in major terrorist attacks like 26/11.

Contrast that response to Pulwama attack in 2019 where drones and planes retaliated immediately. Btw china has been providing cover to Pakistan in security council even for blatant attacks like 26/11. Also Modi just lost majority seats in parliament so this might encourage Pakistan to start attacking again.

From a ground level perspective, ever since the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, security has been beefed up a lot. It was a huge deal and now you have to go through those metal detectors and be frisked when entering places like malls, monuments etc. There are cameras on all the streets too.

The same way you have the right to ask this question, they have the right to question us. That doesn't mean they are owed an answer, or that any Indian decision needs to be based on their opinions, but we need to share the earth with some 190 other countries, and there is no need to alienate people unnecessarily. Especially since we seem to be moving from buying Russian weapons to a more Western-oriented procurement strategy.

Alright hear me out. This is similar to the point in life when you don’t care what world thinks of you. Its like saying “I don’t care what society thinks of me, I’ll do whatever i want because I know whats best for me. I don’t need their validation” Brave, may even be the right thing to do but it comes with consequences because you *live*  in this society. No matter how hard you try to live by your own rules, you will have to be a monk and no less to achieve that luxury. 

Likewise, all other countries are the society we live with. We can, to some extent, do things on own but in one way or the other, what we are portrayed as in the world, effects us.

 India should rise above division within ourselves and fiercely (obsessively) protect our borders on any front(there shouldn't be any ease for any friendly country), as we don't know from which border terrorists are infiltrating from.... We should grow economically and develop our manufacturing and military might.... And please for godsake hire more people in military so that are are enough army personnel at every inch of border to stop any kind of misadventures....

This war has shown us that we are not fighting pakistan but China (who has superior military infrastructure than us), and we can't trust west for any equipment as they will look out for their interests. So better develop our own weapons and invest more on R&amp;D....

I know that long term we do need to have decent relations with India, but I just can't help but feel this is too much too soon. There is good reason to believe that the Indian government orchestrated the killing of a Canadian citizen, in Canada. A police investigation is ongoing, but I don't know how able they will be to chase up the international angle. India is still denying culpability, and as far as I know, we haven't allowed the return of diplomats.

 I would expect more time, and more lower level ad hoc conversations before we got to any sort of official agreement.

I know they did a big bad assassinating Nijjar, but honestly at some point life goes on. Khalistani separatists are absolutely not Canada’s rodeo or our problem.
