Well I have, because like many Americans I rely on several prescription medications to stay healthy. Not “alive” - that’d be hyperbole - but within medically accepted ranges for BP and cholesterol and to keep my head screwed just straight enough. The vast majority of prescription medications (and/or their API) sold in the U.S. are manufactured overseas - especially generics. Consumers - patients in need all - will pay the difference. Period. 

So I’ll write it down for the thousandth fucking time: every single policy position of this administration renders the less wealthy worse off, without exception. The poorer you are the greater the negative impact. And in this case it’s people’s literal lives he’s jeopardizing, not “just” livelihoods and wallets.

Thr idea of bring back medication production back to the US is essential. The quality controls in China, India and other countries certainly worry me. It's worth understanding that Australia has been here before. In 1949 the UK tried the same thing, but using a legal approach. The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution was a country-wide referendum to allow schemes like the PBS (and the aged pension, and other aspects of the 'welfare state' the OG conservatives were against).



There was overwhelming support in 1949 (edit: 1946) and there is overwhelming support now. To the extent that any Australian government which ends the PBS is unlikely to make it to the end of their elected term.


The Australian government would rather nationalise the pharma industry rather than let those companies fail because of US tariffs.

Australians have an excellent government funded medication system so we pay next to nothing when we need meds on our island.

Lift our outbound prices and ensure that the US subsidiary has to pay licensing fees, that just so happen to equal all of the US profits, back to the Australian mainland. Win-win for Australia. Give them no extra tax same as their businesses have been doing here.

The US system isn't based on paying affordable prices on pharma anyway. As a country we are overcharged for access to pharma and our govt put a buffer in - where they pay the bulk of the cost - that does not disadvantage the US pharma companies; we do not freeload - we pay full price at the border. What our PBS does do is it disadvantages the US health insurance companies wanting to hold Australian workers into the golden handcuffs that go with the US employment and healthcare system.

The attack on the PBS is not about pharmaceuticals at all - it's about banking and insurance.

We should continue to turn our interests elsewhere. With the US representing approx 5% of the global population, and with the destruction of their international aid programs, they only continue to weaken global interest in putting up with their bullsh\*t.
