I had a male roommate who used to get so mad at me that he would corner me while I was naked in the bathroom trying to shower, punch holes in the wall, repeatedly quit every job he got, eat all of my food. But according to his friends, I was always in the wrong. He wanted his friends to have decision-making over finances, despite me being the one who paid for everything. Every time he got violent, I would threaten to call the cops but guess what? He would straight up uno reverse on me and call them himself, always male cops showing up, and straight up fucking lecturing me, telling me that I need to be nicer and have a bit more sympathy for him.

I think the police often use assault on an officer as a way to trump up charges, but I don't understand is how people who have been victims of domestic abuse at some point in their life would be any more likely to be criminalized by this law.

Sexual violence is a worldwide problem and not necessarily specific to one people , culture or nation (albeit women’s rights issues may be more prevalent or serious in nature in other areas of the world). 

Does anyone feel like the enquiry culture in the UK is just to avoid actually doing something or alter the narrative? I personally think we need a culture of extremely harsh punishments for rapists and abusers, encourage and educate young men (at school age and before) to be confident and independent and respectful of all their peers and have a nip it in the bud attitude at schools for kids showing early behaviours of violence. 

Obvious the issue is more complex but as a starting point there is a worldwide cultural and social change needed.

Domestic violence prevention requires holistic, system wide change.  It requires trauma informed care, access to better support with AOD issues, improving public housing waitlist times, improving access to culturally safe healthcare and mental healthcare, addressing the root causes of poverty, teaching kids about consent and respectful relationships, and giving perpetrators who do show remorse access to behaviour change programs where they can focus on healing and taking responsibility with others in similar positions.  We need AOD and Mental health to be recombined as inherently intertwined issues - currently they are treated as totally separate in the NT which leads to people with both a diagnosed mental illness and also an addiction being constantly ping-ponged between services without ever actually getting the care they need.  And we need more funding, for DV safe houses as well as DV aftercare - trauma and family therapy, ongoing support with next steps- and not providing funding for these programs to be exclusively run by Christian organisations.  Let those with lived experience of recovery lead the way with consultation around how to approach these things.  Not saying I have all the answers, because I absolutely don't, but I'm just saying the things that so many people have been saying for years while the CLP just cultivates fear and hate while completely removing any sense of agency from the communities most impacted by this.
