Public sentiment regarding India's Economic Policy and the Swadeshi Movement is highly polarized. While there is a strong faction supporting self-reliance and the promotion of indigenous products, there are significant concerns about the government's failure to effectively tackle pressing issues like unemployment and educational mismanagement. Well Nehru’s India had a poor showing economically because of two things- geopolitical factors and economic policy.

I will address the elephant in the room first- economic policy

1. Nehru’s economic policy effectively combined the worst aspects of Capitalism with the worst aspects of Socialism. 

The prominent Indian industrialists at the time pushed the government to implement an extreme version of protectionism. Literally everything was tariffed, all imports and exports needed licensing and foreign investment was outright discouraged. 

On the other hand, the people and the Congress Party had a palate for socialism. Thus a high degree of central planning and state ownership was implemented. Everything was under strict price controls, and raises/firings in private firms needed state approval.

Thus the indian economy had massive overarching conglomerates as well as a high degree of state ownership and central planning at the same time.

This economic policy is highly heterodox and severely discouraged growth and investment. The government was openly hostile to investment. Moreover the ever-expanding government gave bad actors plenty of room to be corrupt.

2. Geopolitics: India was in a hostile neighbourhood. We were under the constant threat of war from Pakistan as well as China. Newly independent India went to war with pakistan in 1948, and then again with China in 1961. War is obviously bad for the economy and growth was severely impacted due to these wars. 

Moreover a large chunk of the budget was spent on defence and mitigating external threats instead of education or industry. 


I would say our slow growth was 70% due to poor economic policy because these policies remained in place until 1991. The remaining 30% is due to geopolitics.

The core objectives of Nehruvian socialism was the removal of poverty and economic self-sufficiency. To achieve this the strategy was to make heavy industry the centre-piece of development, along with a progressively larger role for the public sector, because (a) Nehru saw heavy industry as essential for building an industrial base and achieving self-sufficiency, thereby avoiding economic dependence on other countries, and (b) He believed that bringing the means of production into the public sector would help minimise inequality. In spite of his socialist tendencies he did realise the need for a private sector for rapid economic expansion, which is why the government adopted something closer to a mixed-economy model, but he still held on strongly to pursuing economic self sufficiency and being cautious of international trade.

The reason why his economic policy was a failure was due to the heavy industry focus, which while absorbing significant capital, employed only a tiny proportion of the workforce, leaving the vast majority in agriculture and small industries and excluding them from the development process. This strategy failed to produce the growth necessary to eradicate India’s poverty.

Any betterment in private sector’s work ethic needs to be preceded by betterment in salaries, work-life balance, &amp; worker rights. And for that matter, more focus on GDP per capita and HDI.

I remember some Indians workers coming to my country and working more than 8 hours a day for 6 days a week which is illegal in my country but the company was half owned by my government and they know the loopholes.

The Belgian customers of Indian workers were not even really happy with the productivity of the Indian workers. Their work was really poor compared to people who worked sometimes only 35hours/week and maximum 5 days.

Productivity is not only the amount of hours worked. Past 40 hours a week there is very little gain of productivity for any given worker.

Treat your workers like human beings and not slaves. Because those Indians were definitely not well treated by their Indian hierarchy.

I hear some Indian big hat saying that you should work 80-90 hours a week. That's the only way for India. And I wish they could eat their hats.

You don't need to work crazy hours. Just be more productive while working them. Being respected and valued in your job is important, in words and in kind (money). It should be a meritocracy,  your success should depend on your results and not your cast or your friends.

Managers should trust more their employees and treat them less like children.

Well there are a thousands things to improve productivity. But overworking your population, tracking them and using AI to spy on them and punish them is not the way forward.

If as capitalists you want to see human beings as human capital then why not. But you should at least respect your human capital and their needs.

While his analysis has merit, it overlooks fundamental economics. 

Setting aside political narratives around GDP measurements, economic fundamentals are difficult to completely misrepresent over the long term. Though governments can marginally fake GDP calculations, the general magnitude remains verifiable.

Unless India has been systematically fabricating its economic data for seven decades which would be historically unprecedented the broad trajectory remains credible. Obviously govt can fudge the number little bit but hard to do it in any significant way. 

Even with notoriously opaque economies like China or North Korea, independent economic indicators and cross-reference methods allow experts to establish reasonable estimates, regardless of official reporting.

He talks about engineers not sticking in engineering jobs but transitioning into managerial jobs. Are there engineering jobs in India ? How is the onus primarily on engineers to create engineering jobs and not on the govt. which highly underspends on education and research ?

India's GDP, like other lower income countries, might be higher than the published GDP data because calculating informal economic activity is extremely difficult, while higher formal activity would help in calculating it more accurately.

Compete with China?? India is competing with Vietnam/Malaysia and other south east emerging Asian nations to woo the multi nationals moving away from China. 
China is in a different league. We may have a larger army and economy than Vietnam and others but we don't have global/national champions like China does, some of those companies are global leaders, better than western ones. The only thing that we have better than China is domestic consumption.

Huh? That's not how GDP is calculated. Looks like another top-level guy who has surface-level knowledge &amp; wants to be considered as someone who knows it all.

While there are some truths to his points about engineers (99% is exaggerating) and how China focused on education, I think India also needs to set up more institutes (like ITIs) to upskill the lower strata of the society, which will help the formal sector &amp; increase manufacturing in India.

this national mishap is happening because almost all of the so-called teachers and so-called professors at all tiers in higher education engineering sector in india are simply idiots who have absolute zero practical engineering knowledge, and not even good at throwing up bookish formulas in the classes.

so, so-called engineers that come out from them are reasonably, low quality engineers. why is that even a doubt?


one can faithfully argue that over 80% of any engineering batch in any engineering institute in india give up their interest in engineering before even they reach their final years in their courses.

so, is there a solution? no, there is no solution to this at least in coming 20 years. why? because, any improvement assessment has to be calibrated with exponential growth (with time) of technology considering the whole world. and a lagging will increase the lagging.

 but, what after 20 years? that it is difficult to guess the future of technology beyond 20 years. india can only now look for opportunities of technology stagnancies to overcome the problem, but, then after also, it has to do its own part of the work which itself is bleak.

It was always dumb that it was somehow possible between RedIndia and DomIndia (resulting in an outcome that didn't seem to really be all that satisfying for either side) but an impossible concept  for the two conservative regimes whose biggest disagreement seemed to be whether the indian head said nice things about a british guy or not to figure out some sort of compromise.

I'm going to miss the rework that never was. The lore at least seemed really fun.

All that said, a facelift is an excellent and necessary thing for India, and I'm happy we got it (though removing ever more members and conflicts from the Entente during the pre-war years\* is kinda annoying as a player that loved them for it).

Also, what about foreign policy options?

Will the Dominion join the Entente? What happens if the war drags on long enough? Will the Indian war merge into the WK or just stay contained? Can Germany, Japan, or Russia influence things and gain the princely federation as an ally?

I like this touch up! Personally, I think the content seems pretty good and fleshed out, even if not a full rework, and little bits of flavor are much appreciated. I do like the way a lot of recent updates have had smaller, but more frequent changes to tags, it really helps with the wait!

Let me get this right, the Dominion and the Republic won't be able to peacefully unify via the Lucknow Summit anymore, instead it'll be only Dominon and Federation?

If yes, then personally feels like kind of a shame, even if it makes more sense. Last few KR games, I would always put AIHRP and Gandhi in charge of respective tags to peacefully unite, idk why, I just really like that. Though, funnily enough, I could never actually get it to fire without cheating, because 1) Bose would revolt against the Agrarians and win ("Maximists take Calcutta" event would fire even though their troops never left their starting state, so I resorted to delall their units for HND to win) and 2) either HND would not bother doing political focuses before war with RAJ starts, or the Federation would declare on Bharatiya right before they could finish the summit focus. So I would tag switch and *Focus.AutoComplete* it for them.

Glad to see changes to the subcontinent in the first place. India's content always felt jarring and unfitting, and also outright infuriating late-game because their focuses to get claims and wargoals on China, Burma and Siam (if they control Burmese territory) would just force me into a war I couldn't be bothered to fight (mm yes invading undeveloped lands defended by 200 divisions, how fun).
