Harris announced over the summer she would not, as many expected, run for governor of California next year but has left the door open to another presidential run, though multiple people close to her have told CNN they expect her time running for office may be done.

In the meantime, her book, set to be released in two weeks, is another development in an interconnected but sometimes troubled relationship between her and Biden, which stretches back to her friendship with Biden’s beloved late son Beau through the moment in the first primary debate in June 2019 when she attacked Biden as wrong for his 1970s position on school busing and then through the ups and downs of serving together in the White House.

Harris writes about being undercut by Biden and his staff, accusing them of neither defending nor highlighting her and even “adding fuel to negative narratives that sprang up around me.”

Her assignment from Biden to be the point person for migration issues stemming from Central America, Harris writes, was a perfect example.

“When Republicans mischaracterized my role as ‘border czar,’ no one in the White House comms team helped me to effectively push back and explain what I had really been tasked to do, nor to highlight any of the progress I had achieved,” adding several paragraphs later, “Instead, I shouldered the blame for the porous border, an issue that had proved intractable for Democratic and Republican administrations alike.”

A spokesperson for Biden did not have an immediate comment.

The chapter in the excerpt is written about July 24, 2024, a few days after Harris took over as the nominee following nearly a month of Democratic trauma and when Biden finally delivered an Oval Office address to discuss his exit.

Plus, the only reason you had a rise in support was because people said you had a better view on the genocide and wanted it to end. I know we can armchair QB this campaign to death but Harris did nothing during the campaign to differentiate herself from Biden who was extremely unpopular.  She should have said “fuck it” and offered clear alternatives between what she would change from Biden. Not letting pro-Palestinians speak at the DNC - even though many of them backed Harris - was a crucial miscalculation. She needed to be way more forceful on holding Israel accountable.

Her and Walz should have not listened to DNC relics who told them to stop calling the GOP “weird.” The “weird” line worked and then the consultants got involved. Walz should have been given more freedom to be himself. After the VP debate they sidelined him, the guy who had the most popularity among the four running.

Internal polling shows that if Biden had stayed in the race that  Trump would have won states like Virginia and gotten 400 electoral votes. Harris being on the top of the ticket actually helped salvage some of the bleeding but it never should have come to this.

Yes Harris deserves a lot of the blame but I blame Biden far more than I do Harris. There have long been stories about how insular the Biden team is and lack of communication. There have long been reports on how little he gave Harris to do or promote her in any fashion. Biden should have announced he was stepping down in 2023 or even early-2024. He waited until July 2024 to say he wasn’t running again and handicapped Harris by giving her only 107 days to get a campaign together and introduce herself to the American people.

I think it was a lot more reckless to be totally on board with being the personally anointed successor of a highly unpopular candidate, knowing that you were only 3.5 years removed from being openly called a DEI VP selection. Like I have a lot of ethical issues with her foreign policy takes from the campaign (and frankly from her time as Veep too) but the sheer lack of political instincts was straight up painful to watch play out.

I guess I’m just not interested in a book by someone who has been largely silent these last several months. I think voters hold much blame for the situation we are in. But the fact is Harris wasn’t a strong candidate because she is incapable of taking risks or stances. She does correctly ID that Biden world fucked her over multiple times but it’s just flabbergasting that she really admits that loyalty was more important than winning the election. This was one of the greatest letdowns during her run and sums up a big issue with her candidacy. Harris never gave off the impression of a leader that could take bold stances and stuck to safe and timid talking points instead.

I spent her entire presidential run knowing that I was going to vote for her regardless. I hoped and waited the entire time for her to say something that would inspire confidence and make me feel *good* about my vote. That moment never came.

I have very little interest in the reminiscences of a 'never was' on the national stage that seemingly everyone (but her and the DNC) can agree was just along for the ride. Biden was old, he shouldn't have ran a second time. It's clear the Democrats had no unity and Biden was a hip flask choice whose primary benefits were being relatively non controversial, normal, and not Trump - and they didn't have anyone else on short notice like that because they didn't begin IMMEDIATELY grooming a successor like they should have the day he took office (he even said back then he'd be a 1 term). 

But Trump is now \*as\* old, and shouldn't have run the \*first\* time, and even at his most "senile"  - and I use quotation marks because I don't buy the hype - Biden was not screwing up at this level. Granted that's a poor comparison because it's impossible to match the winning gold standard for malfeasance currently in office.

I don't entirely disagree. However, the best course of action for the Democratic party would have been for Biden to announce he would not seek re-election well before the primary season. From what we know now, the signs of his cognitive decline were already apparent at that point.

If he did so, it's very unlikely that Harris would have been the nominee. The Democratic Party would have almost certainly chosen someone more electable. More to the point, it would have chosen someone who could realistically claim to (respectfully) disagree with Biden's political choices and offer an alternative.

I'm also of the opinion that it's very likely that the Biden's "decision" was more a decision of their inside circle. If you rode Biden's coat tails into a cushy Administration job, you don't want to lose that job - and losing that job is precisely what would happen if the kind of Democrat I described above got into office. So from your perspective, it's better to ride the corpse of Joe Biden for another 4 years than it is to make a best-interests-of-the-nation decision to tell him that he shouldn't run. With so many motivated cheerleaders surrounding him, it would have been difficult for Biden to really understand how far he had fallen.

On the one hand, Harris failed to torch Biden in 2024 which played a role in Trump's victory. She could've said this last year and gave herself more tools to fight against Trump. Hopefully she shares some self-criticism in her book. 

On the other, she's right to torch him and his team. The excerpt shows the arrogance which led Team Biden to ruin. Instead of embracing Harris -- their own pick lol -- they spent 4 years trashing her. There was reporting post-debate (!) that Team Biden were using Harris as a sort of boogeyman to get Dems to fall in line behind him. They seemed to openly resent her to the point you'd think they would've replaced her.

The fact is he was old and they should've been prepping the VP to replace him from Day 1. Instead, they basically ran as if Biden was Reagan 2.0 when he was solidly unpopular. Just pure ignorance and contempt of voters. One of Biden's advisors Mike Donilon said that Dems "lost their mind" after the debate and should've treated like Obama in 2012. That's the level of delusion these Biden staffers had.

Agreed.  Democrats could have had a real competitive candidate in 2024 if Biden hadn’t run.

I will be furious if this is true. She had the biggest stage to communicate her thoughts on the matter. Part of the reason why some people stayed home and didn’t vote is  because she ‘couldn’t think of doing anything different than his administration’.

What a fucking idiot. This whole book, for which she has been out speaking about as Trump disappears people, is a total cover your ass move for the terrible campaign she ran and her catastrophic loss. Yes, Biden made a horrible, unforgivable decision but she did not try at all to distance herself from him despite having plenty of opportunities to do so. 

Her excuses in this excerpt are representative of establishment Dems who act live they have no power and only condemn things after the damage is already done.

I think the big question going into the book will be why didn't she speak up earlier. Why didn't she object to Biden running again in his state? Was she timid? Was she silenced? Did she try to open a dialogue in the party but all the doors closed on her?


I also think releasing a book critical of Biden probably nails the door shut for a 2028 primary run, since all the bridges to his donors will be burned.

It's true that Biden should only have run once. It's also true that Harris would never have gotten nominated in a proper primary. She's incredibly uncharismatic and forgettable. She also had nothing to say about how she would be different than Biden when asked about it. 

So maybe she should shut up and go away like one does after losing a presidential election.

It was reckless of her to run, as well. We saw in 2019 that she had mediocre campaigning talent, and she tried to win the presidency without answers to basic questions like "What would you do differently than the current guy?"

She clearly was not able to transition away from a party machine system in California to contested general elections.
