Compare our condition with Europe who has passed DSA in 2016 . Our IT law took too much time and now it has not yet been implemented.

However, the main problem is the absolute garbage state of law enforcement. What is the point of having laws on the books if they are rarely enforced, or used to selectively punish people when convenient/inconvenient?

This is something we are tackling since the beginning. First it was forging handwriting, then morphing images, then doctoring audio tapes and videos. AI has only made it far easier for the average Joe.

Stricter law cannot do much, what we need is forgery detection tools. Everything must be validated through trusted sources before believing them. That's the way out.

Laws can help, but looking the existing ones targetting misinformation I have little hope about proper implementation. As responsible citizens, we should do it ourselves, everyday.

The ones who should make the law are the ones who are exploiting the lack of such laws the most. And if they create a law, it will not stop them, they will just use it on the rest.

IMHO, having a law to prevent malicious use of AI should be implemented but  it would be really hard to enforce.  

Specially, couple of years down the line when distinguishing AI generated content from original content will be nigh impossible. It is already difficult today, imagine how close to reality they will be in some time.  

Then, any such law might just end up become another tool for those in power to silence others (as reality of any claim will be difficult to prove or disprove).   

So, what is the solution? Instead of blindly creating a law we need dedicated research into the field of differentiating real and AI generated content. This will not only help will proper law enforcement but will have a far more greater impact towards benefit of the society in different areas.  

But again, this is much easier said then done. Specially, given the lack of any immediate financial motivation for the same.

This graph is kind of useless when the innovation here has not reached the point where sentiment against regulation becomes an issue. For example what if the Indian government deems censoring an LLM bot as important on certain issues, I am sure sentiments would change. Of course when an industry is not mature in a country, local regulations against it maybe lax as the lawmakers dont deem it to be a relevant topic yet. This gives no indication of the actual innovation occurring. Although I might be wrong depending on whose sentiment is being analyzed, is it just random people or start up founders who have actually made progress and faced very low regulations and received good funding. If the latter is the case then sure we are doing well but that's probably wishful thinking with these random Twitter charts.

Every one in India is judging the Indian AI application as the next Chat GPT avatar and how popular it will become. Unbeknownst to them there are a lot of applications based on specific use cases that are being used but will never become popular for the general public. Most of these applications are in health, defense, engineering, text to speech and translation, agriculture and other applications. They will never be advertised and will never come to fore. Those in the know will know them, others not so much.

The government must ensure that AI technology does not become concentrated in the hands of a few large corporations. The Cambridge Analytica case has already shown us how technology and AI can be exploited to manipulate public opinion for personal or political gain. What’s even more ironic is that countries like China which have stricter AI regulations than India are actually ahead in AI research and development, and have produced more advanced models.

Governments look for excuses to implement massive surveillance. In 2001 it was terrorist treats. Now is CSAM. In both cases the measures are proved to not work for the stated goal.

Also, this is not a left vs right policy, as many of these measures have been pushed by both sides (for instance Chat Control has been pushed by consecutive presidencies of left and right governments).

Major social networks provide fraudsters and the like a lot of space and leverage to push total dumbshit conspiracies, easily automated fraud systems and much more onto people for pennies on the dollar. 

And people fall for them. The young because they are not experienced and easily influenced, and old folks because they are in their conginitive decline stage. 

Hence we should be able to verify who you really are and we should be able to hold you accountable for what you did.

So far so good, as long as this only affects big players. 

But somewhere down the road this will become a blanket law no matter the size and we all are screwed, because there is no cross-country and platform technology that can easily, reliably and privately confirm who you are without you uploading IDs to thousands of insecure one-man-show company databases.

Jokes aside: Maybe the solution also lies in technology, like maybe a secure and authenticated way to tell AI generated content from human-generated. And follow that up with filtering out AI content from the internet.
