This is a very big problem and requires efforts from both the Government and us citizens both.

1) Proper waste disposal - In my area only MCD sucks at collecting trash from homes. People end up throwing it on road which eventually is burnt off. What we can do here is make sure that the trash is collected from your home and disposed properly.

2) Proper roads -  any broken road with accumulate dust and will further add to the problem. Whenever you see a rough patch or a broken road, take the initiative and lodge a complaint to respective agencies (MCD/PGMS/CPGRAMS). Do it for atleast the roads near your home.

3) We need better public transport infrastructure, more and more vehicles on the road will only elevate the problem. 

4) People should be able to goto work near where they live, currently most of the folks travel throughout Delhi and goto Gurugram/Noida with their vehicles / pooled cabs / buses which again causes more pollution issues. If we can somehow reduce the travel, by bringing offices near to people or providing WFH would help.

5) Factories/Industries which cause pollution should either be moved out of NCR or should shift to greener alternatives of whatever they are doing.   
  
No point in discussing the Diwali Crackers issue / Stubble burning as there isn't much that we can do to stop it.   
  
Overall I feel we should hold the govt. accountable by raising complaints regularly instead of just blaming them, if each one of us does this it would help alot and pressurise them into doing something.

My bigger issue is when things are actually doable (may require more money and I am sure funds can be arranged - I am sure if they increase taxes marginally for NCR, people would still be ok if they guarantee an AQI &lt; 100. I am sure there are more qualified people thinking about it but none of the following out of a random list from chatGPT seems not doable - its just either a money or a will to do issue -

For most people, it is just mild irritation in the throat or even no symptoms at all, so not that important and delhi people think they are built different and air pollution can't affect them (I literally heard someone say this 🙂).

I’m an earth and environmental science student and just finished learning about air quality, including PM2.5 and PM5. I believe that studies determined there’s no safe threshold of exposure to them, meaning even the smallest amount increases respiratory and cardiovascular harm. 

Breathable, clean air should be treated as a right, not a privilege.

It’s weird when my indoor air quality monitor goes above 5 on the PM2.5 scale. This is crazy work.

Just FYI, This is New Delhi and also the surrounding areas of ~150 kms, not whole India.

Primary reasons are(Not just Diwali) -
- New Delhi is located in a large flat area surrounded by higher ground on all sides
- Stubble burning from said higher ground areas
- Windspeed too low around this time of season
- Diwali pollution is additional bonus with Stubble burning and no wind.
- And ofcourse, People and government haven't cared much in past years.

I first saw this back in 2019, when people couldn't care less about the pollution, and I was flabbergasted. In 2025, I see more people talking about it, but it still needs MUCH MORE ATTENTION then it gets.

New Delhi living in that kind of pollution is probably a first in the world with such a large population. The results won't be too good and people won't likely know the full effects until many years.


On the other side of India, there are city centers like Bangalore which always remain around ~50, many low AQI cities on higher grounds near New Delhi aswell.

I believe the OP should post every week AQI in Delhi over the year to understand that Delhi regardless of Diwali and Fireworks, is always shit when it comes to AQI.

Also when Stubble burning in Punjab state starts, the AQI is probably worse.

Back in HS my art teacher had a backroom in his classroom that students used for printing, resin pouring, and airbrushing. Every time someone would airbrush, the air quality reader would spike all the way to 999. Art teacher joked that he had blacklung from how much time he spent back there

We seriously need to educate people about the health concerns. We don't even know what are the long term impacts, or impacts or newborns, pregnant women etc. Even if the govt. doesn't accept global reports, they should at least allocate money to do these research. **If they truly care for the people.

(From a Mumbaikar) One thing about Delhi that I don't understand is that you'll have better metro and public transport (Mumbai Metro barely exists beyond the suburbs, we should be having 7500 buses but have 2900 buses and the autos and taxis don't want to go short distance they want to go 20 kms so a LOT of people use private vehicles) and still have worse AQI. I mean like Mumbai and the surrounding area is heavily congested and half the time the cars are sitting in traffic, the industrial plants barely try to control pollution, the sand mafia is destroying the mangroves which eat up a lot of the pollution, we have like a million high rise apartments getting built and all of them cough up pollutants like its Covid or smth and the politicians are always bickering so shit barely gets done. Still Mumbai average AQI is like 150. Like how is this possible? I know the sea does a lot of heavy lifting but when you consider that there's a lot more pollution being generated.
