Because for his entire life, but especially since he got re-elected, everyone has ultimately knuckled under and given Trump what he wanted.

Back when he was a sleazy real-estate mogul constantly refusing to pay his contractors and then threatening to drown them in lawsuits, they usually backed down because whatever money they would get if they won wouldn't make up for the legal fees.

And it's only gotten worse from there.  For the past decade, but especially these last 7 months, Trump has been surrounded by people who have folded like lawn chairs.  Congress, SCOTUS, academia, major law firms, corporations...pretty much everyone has just rolled over for him.

He has no other context in his life beyond "If I scream and complain and threaten loud enough, they will do what I want."  So why wouldn't he expect other nations to give in like everyone else around him has done so far?

I can't imagine what Trump's top defense officials are thinking, because they're basically all self-proclaimed "realists" (very shitty versions of realists that hardly know anything I might add). The current Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Elbridge Colby, wrote a whole book about how the US needs an "anti-hegemonic coalition" against China that included India as a key partner, and he basically wants the US to lead it with as little involvement as possible.

Hell, Colby's book "Strategy of Denial" even says on page 76 that "the United States, Japan, India, and Australia by themselves...are probably not enough to prevent China from establishing regional hegemony." So he's gotta be punching the air as hard as he can right now. It'd all be lowkey hilarious if I didn't live here.

The actual motivation of the tariff announcements may have been insider trading by Trump cronies. Once the market saw Taquito man flip flop on the tariffs, and the tax bill passed, we had roughly a 25% gain in Spy, in just a few months.

They’ll “sort it out” when billing customers, and guess who ends up footing the bill? Indian American customers who love those designs. Congrats, you just paid the cousin tax.

As for movies? Tollywood and Bollywood might want to Venmo a few less crores back. If you’re cashing in on U.S. audiences, it's again Indian Americans who will not curb their enthusiasm to watch movies regardless.

It's not about trump, it's not the president that decides on foreign policy but the Washington foreign policy elites or the "blob" as academics have called it. The decisions come from US Grand Strategy of neoliberalism or liberal hegemony. You can read more about this by looking up liberal hegemony online and how this has unfortunately informed and guided most US foreign policy since the fall of the Soviet Union.

There's a sense of hubris and arrogance in US decision making that is not present in other states precisely because the US is a great power that is used to being followed and used to leading starting from the end of ww2 and expanding its power during the start of the unipolar world order. 

This has been concluded by numerous academics leading many to advocate for a new US grand strategy suited to a, if you'll allow me to label it "multipolar world order" where the US's position in the world was not once what it was. The problem stems from a refusal to change even when the security environment has changed, the grand strategy is no longer suitable.

I don’t think the administration expected India to cave. They used a national security pretext, like Canada with fentanyl, to tariff a country that has high tariffs and/or trade barriers themselves. In this case it was buying Russian oil.

The tariffs themselves have a lot of exemptions just like Canada. If there was a serious intent to really make India cave quickly, much more painful levers could have been used. 

It’s hard to take any media about this seriously, especially if Indian government officials are involved as sources. Sure there was probably real tension with the optics of the ceasefire, but the US has tariffed every country. India wasn’t going to escape especially when it’s extremely protectionist itself.

Fact is the whole world is turning to protectionism because China decided two decades ago to be the world’s factory. They did not want any country to produce anything. Only buy from them. This went on well so far but not anymore. Everyone realised their mistake. Tariffs are only going to get higher and working abroad is only going to get difficult. Every country is now aiming to become self reliant. That is the only way for long term stability.Thank God at least we are not relying on other countries to feed our 150 crs people.  And this is why Govt has started mixing ethanol with petrol. Tariff raj is coming everywhere.

The import duties will remain the same. Big big story at play here. India cannot risk an uphill battle getting even harder - current account deficit crisis. Decreasing tariffs will increase imports by a huge asymmetrical margin and will weaken the rupee further making the same imported items costlier thus having no effect. Tariffs will stay in place until India arrives at the condition to have comfortable current account surpluses, or, until a party comes in power who will be purchased/bribed to ease up imports by a foreign country's ruling party(CCP-INC hidden pact which has not been made public yet but imports from China started flowing in like water from the Himalayas)
