The Navy easily is the best run contingent of the Indian Armed Forces in terms of procurement and in some cases other departments as well.  Really wish we could have see their participation in the recent operation. While the IAF and the IA gets their fair share of experience on the battlefield, the strategic edge that India possesses with their Navy rarely gets shown.

There is also the submarine Vagsheer, three new oceanic tugboats, and as planned, a further 2-3 ASW corvettes, one more frigate (plus Udaygiri, which was delivered yesterday, but will be commissioned sometime next month), plus 1-2 survey ships, 1 diving support ship, etc.

Oh, and the ICG gets more ships too.

Two small design characteristics of IN destroyers I've never quite understood:

1. Why are ASW rocket launchers installed on an area (infront of the bridge) traditionally reserved for either additional VLS cells, CIWS, or 76mm SR guns? (I do understand that Indian destroyers have to fulfill an additional ASW role ontop of fleet air defence. But such systems could easily be moved to the sides of the superstructure, as is the case for most DDGs. Exposing a vital area / space to ASM attacks for a few additional ASW rockets seems to be a slight underutilization of space to say the least )
2. What's the reason behind the cool looking dual level bridge design? (those pretty much disappeared after the early Cold War, IN ships seemed one of the last ones still utilizing them)

The Indian navy is probably the most forward looking of the Indian armed forces with the least allocated budget. I hope they can roll these new ships out at a faster rate.

Any idea what radar the new ship will have? Is it a new variant of the MF-Star?

US is getting unstable. It's good news to see rapid expansion of Indian navy. 


It seems Asian countries are doing much better in shipbuilding than western countries.
