No they didn't.  They ordered all of the holders of a specific visa called SAARC to leave, which means like a few hundred people.  There are around a million Pakistanis living in India, and getting them all to leave in 48 hours is practically impossible.

i’m indian. we just had a terrorist attack in kashmir where 25 civilians were killed on religious grounds (the terrorists apparently made sure they were hindu by forcing the men to strip before killing them). according to some channels, TRF (LeT) has taken responsibility for the attack - the indian govt and media blames pakistan for harbouring them. 

there is a possibility that these killers weren’t pakistani nationals but instead kashmiri militants. kashmir is a warzone, and currently under pressure from india, china, and pakistan. india has a technical “right” to the territory since its hindu king relinquished the region to us after independence, but most kashmiri people want an independent state. in this sense, india can be considered a colonial entity, and its army routinely perpetuates horrific acts against the kashmiri people, causing unrest and hatred. 

religious chauvinism meant there was already a huge increase in anti-islam sentiment in india, the attack is now being used by mainstream media and the government as justification for genocidal statements against indian muslims and kashmiris. but there is a lot of misinfo right now, we still don’t know for sure who was behind the attack. modi and his allies will be using this to stoke up religious fervour, as they did with other terrorist attacks before this.

The water part is the most interesting/scary.  To start, the Indus gives something like 80% of Pakistan its water but only something like 15% of India it’s water, so it has a horrifying asymmetry (see also: Ethiopians always threatening to dam the Nile).  When India and Pakistan split, they made a deal about the Indus.  The Indus has 6 river systems that feed into it, and three were given to India and three to Pakistan.  The entire Indus was given to Pakistan.  But it wasn’t actually equitable, because the three PAK got are much bigger, so from day one it was a major concession.  It was seen as buying peace but now the BJP nationalists (rightly!) point out that it’s not fair and are pulling back.

It has all sorts of funky results.  Kashmir, controlled by India, has water systems controlled by Pakistan.  So actual Kashmiris can’t use the rivers in Kashmir to eg dam and make electricity or irrigation for farms or whatever.  Kashmir is basically set up to fail.  BUT that’s ok because India doesn’t like Kashmir so hurting them is no problem AND Kashmiris are Muslims so India can be like, “Kashmir, ask your brothers in Pakistan for water rights.  Oh, they don’t give you water rights?  lol Islam sucks”.

Cancelling the Indus deal is the Asian version of the US pulling out of NATO.  This is a MAJOR upheaval of an almost century old understanding that effects ~300 million people directly and ~2 billion people indirectly

Need significant infrastructure upgrade to divert the rivers, like how China does it. Modi is just grandstanding to save his face. Suspending the water treaty is a symbolic move, because india does not have the capacity to store any diverted water. Maybe for a few days but not much longer. We certainly cannot make a major dent in the supply of water to Pakistan. Building the infra to store that water will take decades. But it is significant that India has done this, because this treaty has been around since 1960, and survived the 1965 and 1972 wars, the 1999 conflict, and several other terrorist attacks by groups operating out of Pakistan, such as the one on the Indian parliament in 2001.

As an Indian, more than the measures taken here, we want to understand why there was such a lapse in security in a territory that's been known to harbour extremist elements for decades. The Home Minister came out literally a couple of weeks ago and said that extremist elements have been minimised in the region.

Make no mistake, this was a failure on India's part to secure the region. Whether the Kashmiris are protecting the sleeper cells or hold anti-India sentiment is secondary. The Indian Defence and intelligence mechanism has utterly failed the people of India here.

The wrong thing to do is to play into Pakistan's hands and order some nonsensical military action against some random terrorist unit and call it a win.

The Kashmir situation has to be re-evaluated. It's a region that's vital for Indian defense, but it is known that a vast majority of Kashmiris want independence and autonomy, something that was removed with the abrogation of Article 370. The defense in that area has to be re-fortified and the elements within the local population that are aiding and abetting extremist elements have to be handled accordingly, whether that's re-education or penalization, it's not acceptable to have them support terrorist cells to attack like this. But this attack, and the fact that the tourism industry in Kashmir is going to take a nosedive is not a good sign for Kashmir's economy, which was already suffering for decades prior.

The move to step away from the Indus water treaty is not as strict as it's, in my opinion. While the move to say India will no longer honour the treaty is a good move, what the follow-up will be is the 64 thousand-dollar question. It will take significant funding and efforts to build any dams across the rivers to curtail the flow of water, and of course will take many years.

Any attempt at renegotiation of the IWT is going to make the current government look weak. Indians most definitely do not want to come to the negotiating table right now.

Anyone doubting if it was the right move from India needs to watch this 2 year old Youtube video that is about 10 mins long to understand how we were stabbed repeatedly despite making jaw dropping humanitarian goodwill gestures to the Pakistanis.

Let's be honest,the indus water treaty should have been discussed ages ago,the fact we give I guess more than 60-70% or our water is insane and even now when they are "suspending" this it won't change much as we don't have that much infrastructure to hold every single water path so most probably water will still flow but just not in that much excess quantity as they were used to 

 rest of these "major decisions" don't seem to be as much of a big discussion matter to me🤷‍♀️I could be wrong,I am not that politically and geopolitically knowledgeable but the only thing worth talking about is the suspension of treaty,which will be worth while if they could actually either stop the treaty altogether or change it and make it more favourable towards us,hopefully we will see much more major decisions with bigger ground impact

I don’t think this is helpful, attacking Pakistan through water wars and cancellation of visa’s is purely symbolic and does nothing to fix the lapse of intelligence and security that the government of India failed to do.

The water treaty won’t hurt the Pakistani government at all, it will hurt the needy guys over there and that’s it. It will force an even greater anti-India rhetoric over there and call for more terror attacks in the future. I don’t say this out of sympathy (I have none for that sorry country). Their government is 99% military men who thrive on war and on peddling their economy into a continuous cycle of war and uncertainty. This will only strengthen their will to declare war on India on multiple fronts.

What Government of India really needs to do is to strengthen Kashmir immediately, start hiring army men (paused since 3 years) and get their intelligence agencies on board immediately. We should work with our partners to identify terrorist camps and neutralise them like it was done during the URI strike but even more importantly look inward and truly secure Kashmir to such an extent where every person there is heavily vetted. This strengthening will help stabilise that region and also help its economy since at this point no one wants to invest in an unstable region where terror attacks can happen in broad daylight

Has this worked for last 78 years? Handling this as a Pakistan issue seems a way to hide from actual responsibility. The terrorists didn't come from Pakistan, they were from Kashmir. Handle the problems that create these terrorists. As long as it gives them pride and respect, you will have new youth always getting recruited, and do such attacks to rise quickly. Govt need to break the network on ground, and to get the youth into jobs. And, improve security procedures and alert on lapses quicker not after attacks.
