Kerala's health system is chock full of docs in administrative positions not wanting anything to do with actual treatment of patients. Health services should ideally use docs for front line. Also this health minister sucks, the earlier lady was awesome.

I can't stress this enough, if you get bitten by a rabid dog and have not received a rabies vaccination prior to the bite, your chances of survival, with or with treatment stand at 10%( I'm being optimistic here).

The rabies vaccine is to help your body build an immune response to the virus. It isn't a cure. Most people don't understand that it's a vaccine, to be taken prior to infection, and not a cure or a form of treatment.

Only solution is to massively hit the streets and demand changes to Animal cruelty laws so that dangerous and potentially rabid street dogs can be eliminated by local authorities.

Till public organise rallies, these animal rights lobby will not allow us to solve the problem.

I’m just sharing my incident. Will probably help. Once I was cornered by a pack of dogs at a dead end. I’m on a bike and all dogs start barking violently at me. Stand your ground. Don’t move. Make yourself bigger and don’t make eye contact with any dog. Don’t show your teeth. Take deep and slow breaths… they can detect nervousness. 
In my case, I waited for them to look down and then I just placed my legs on the bike tank and ripped from there. Almost skidded and fell down but I just kept accelerating and eventually I escaped the pack that chased me. I could have died. Be careful out there.

Idk why the protestors simply throw these stray dogs inside these politician's residence

I think they should start an animal shelter. Where you try to find adoptees, if an animal is aggressive or rabid euthanasia. 
That’s the only way we can stop this.

My mom works in a medical college. She said last week some 10 year old kid died due to rabies from a dog bite. The kid didn't tell his parents cause he was afraid of needles and injections. It was too late when he got hospitalized.

Interesting news report. Although, by only reading the headline, some people may be quick to draw conclusions. Breaking down the numbers:


13 people died in 5 months (almost three per month)


Out of 13:


10 of whom may have had better chance of survival if they had taken their vaccination 


Out of 13:


5 no known causes. Could be dogs, cats, bats etc.


3 were pet bites/scratches. The report questions efficacy of antirabies vaccines, but unless there is a study this is speculative. Plus, 3 fails in maybe 10000 shots is minimal.

3 died even after vaccination. Report says nature of wounds had a role to play. So vaccination may have worked, but the victims had suffered deep wounds.

Based on this my opinion:


1. Increase vaccination awareness to schools since students are bigger victims
2. Rabid dogs need to be identified. But this is difficult.
3. Female dogs need to be spayed and released
4. Food source for dogs need to be eliminated. Proper waste disposal. 


Killing dogs blindly is not the answer. We need to put in hard work.


In cases like dengue, killing each and every mosquito is not a solution. Need to Target source - still water. 
Unfortunately our politics may need to be seen "doing more" rather than doing effectively. Just like being in vande Bharat when the Railways is suffering. 

Someone needs to take this up… stray dogs are a menace and it needs to be controlled .. activists can perhaps open shelters if they really mean what they say

Im all for culling rabid dogs, but we also must admit that lot of malayalis abandon them on streets. Most of them have no affection to it and is only kept for guarding their homes. You can see them just chained or caged their entire life. Also the non rabid dogs should be neutered on streets.

Animal lovers are problem everywhere. There is a kids play area where footwear needs to be taken off and pets to be kept away. But stray dogs are rampaging the place. They urinate and poop around. There have been discussions to relocate them ( not kill, just relicate outside the gate) as they somehow got inside the community through some broken fences. But apparently the so called animal lovers came. They feed tit bits to these dogs once in a while and now claim it's their natural habitat. These dogs are not going out since it's gated and are now chasing kids and people. Not just plat area...but in the society. They are inside parking area at nights in packs and defecate anywhere They feel like. Pet owners have to pick after their pets. But these strays are unattended. This community is in Karnataka amd There seem to be a law that we cannot move dogs from their habitat. Animal lovers are now expecting the kids to co exist with these strays

 Maybe sounds like a conspiracy theory. But I have heard it from multiple sources like govt doctors, local body executives.

There exists a monopoly in the rabies vaccines and these companies lobby the government not to eradicate the stray dogs and they finance these dog love ngos.
Since every year there is a certain number of vaccines that should be kept and they should be periodically replaced or something.

I hope the so called street dog lovers are now happy.

If there was bleeding that's a Category 3 bite which would have required Rabies Immunoglobulin (unless previously vaccinated, then immunoglobulin not given) along with the vaccine.

"If that is the case" and Immunoglobulin not given, it's a case of medical negligence. 

If the child was previously vaccinated then there's no indication to give Immunoglobulin, then it's an unfortunate incident.

A novice query to informed people here. The normal vaccine for developing antibodies for Rabies, does it have any protocol for storage like above this temperatire and not below another temp? Could it be that tgis dose was not stored properly?

There needs to be an audit on all medical cold chains across the country.

Without proper cold chains these vaccines won't work. Many of these vendors will not turn on chillers even for critical medicines.

In many countries - when a major power outage happens. All vaccines which didn't have proper cold chain will be discarded.

This is so sad. Poor little girl! Stray dogs are a menace and I have stopped going out for walks pirely because of this. No measures are taken to control or vaccinate the strays. 

I don't know if immunoglobulin was given to her along with the vaccine. If anybody gets bitten on hands or face please insist to the doctor and take immunoglobulin shots along with rabies shots. Its expensive,  but don't take any chances with rabies.

When are people going to understand we shouldn't be feeding stray dogs if we're not going to take responsibility for them. Feeding them will lead to an increase in their population and it will be difficult to walk in the streets. And most of the times these dogs bite innocent kids who just go out to play. Not just kids it affects adults too. It's a proven fact that dogs become more territorial at night. A person walking alone at night has a high chance of getting attacked by a gang of dogs if he enters their territory. 
Dogs are loyal and very friendly species. But they are still animals who used to hunt. It's in their blood to be territorial at times and be violent.
Next time before you feed any stray think about the consequences of your actions. Maybe it could your own little one who could get bitten.

She should've been vaccinated. Occasionally I feed strays too, once a dog got too affectionate and jumped on me and scratched on my hand I immediately went to the nearest govt hospital and got my vaccination done. Some dogs/cats doesn't show any symptoms of rabies even if it is infected.

People still don't know about rabies properly. It is the worst way for any soul to endure life and death. Anyone, if ever has came in contact with a wild animal which they cannot keep observing on, should get the vaccine. It's not that expensive.

They really should start a TNR program for strays because this problem will only get worse. Maybe open a few dog pounds in localities too and try and train these dogs so they can be adopted.

Take the vaccine. 
Works as pre exposure prophylaxis.
3 intramuscular doses on day 0,7,21 or 28 on one of your deltoids.
In addition, proper wound hygiene.
Edit : rabies is a virus. Not bacteria.
It'll only get transmitted from bites of an infected dog or from licks on open wounds.

You should have told this to doctor instead.
