Criticism of the city is towards the civic authorities who are in close cahoots with the real estate folks and corrupt to the core. What we see in the areas surrounding ORR is brazen non-ending construction/white topping etc etc which has led to the current fiasco.

Yes, the parts of the city that were included in BBMP solely for revenue generation are flooded. However, the areas where majority of this revenue is spent are not flooded. Kudos, let’s not form opinions about the entire city which treats migrants like cash cows while depriving them of any infrastructure of their own money.

These are the same people who will crib about their state’s GST revenue being allocated to other states, but will happily rejoice in the fact that the areas they live in do not generate enough revenue and they just leech on the actual revenue that comes from the IT areas, whom they just want to go back to their home towns.

This hypocrisy is what is out in the open for the whole world to see, and now they’re scrambling to save face by saying “not the entire city is flooded”.

I guess the complaints comes from places where people paid several thousands in rents and lakhs in security deposits for a flat, and then seeing it get flooded. On top of this, they see the way to their offices getting flooded.

A quick Google search shows the population of the city to be around 1.3 Cr. Assuming an equal distribution of people, and thus 20% people being affected, it's still 26 Lakh people that are affected. Throwing up numbers that 70% are fine is just like saying only 1.2% (source - [here](https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality)) of the infected COVID patients died. That's still over 5L deaths. 
Irrespective of whether you are personally affected or not, it's a very bad situation.

This isn't a great take, and one that is perhaps steeped in privilege.

Any and all infrastructural issues will affect people across Bangalore very disproportionately. Consider this [topographical map of the city](https://en-us.topographic-map.com/maps/tlvh/Bengaluru/), and [this paper](https://www.theindiaforum.in/article/planning-bangalore-colonial-legacy-discriminatory-housing) that links historical socio-economic conditions with topography. This largely holds true even today.

This essentially makes matters doubly horrible for poorer folk, as they're already in low-lying areas, and are less likely to have pukka housing and the means to deal with a flood.

The comparison with Chennai and Mumbai is also misplaced - the quantum of rain then was multiple times worse (literally - Chennai received nearly 500 mm of rain in a day in 2015; we had 135 mm on the day before) than what we've had. [Chennai at least is also more even](https://en-us.topographic-map.com/maps/vm50/Chennai/) than Bangalore is, so it's just quite possible that everyone was badly affected as opposed to a smaller, but more deeply unfortunate fraction here.

I'm glad you're well, and I hope you and yours remain unaffected by this. But please don't attempt to minimise what is a consequence of years of neglect and disastrous planning and execution on the part of local governments and civic authorities - it's only going to continue to get worse, and next time we may not all be as lucky.

But you should remember most of the expats, IT folks travel from the areas affected so it brings a bad name/image to Bangalore being a IT capital of India.
Just saying that we are better than most metros and washing our hands isn't the solution to the problem.
Many companies and even people have suffered losses and employees are unwilling to come to office.
Corruption is wide spread in Karnataka, people want to point out that and are asking the Civic bodies to do a better job. 
If we don't do anything, nothing is ever going to change in Bangalore, neither flooding nor potholes.

I have been in Bangalore from past 25 years, have lot of relatives and friends everywhere in Bangalore  and even today only places I know after Silk board are bellandur, Kadubisnalli, ITPL and marathahalli.

I don't even know what that part of Bangalore is really. Never had a need to go there for any family occasions or functions. Feels like that should have been named something else and not Bangalore. Something like twin of Bangalore as its a complete different city.

Can confirm. South Bangalore is completely fine. It's rains a lot like thrice a day but there is hardly any water in the roads when I travel. Also no power cuts , no traffic jams nothing. Thats why it's hard to fathom what's happening elsewhere.

Sure, I will remember telling the people living in remaining 20-25% areas, with houses filled with 2-3 feet water, or their only lane from their apartment to market/office, etc being filled with water.

I will tell them that a guy on reddit says that they have nothing to worry about.

Jokes apart, the panic and anger is not about the fraction of city being drowned. It would have been a very different situation if the whole city had submerged.

The fact is that govt just points at a few houses that are encroaching the Rajakaluve, while the reality is that even if you remove those few houses, situation wouldn't have been difficult.

The real question is that how did so many apartments and layouts got approvals, while they were encroaching lakes and Rajakaluve. It's not that all the drowned buildings and areas are B-khata properties.

These projects were sanctioned in tenures of different political parties, so even the usual "previous governments did it" doesn't make any sense here.

The outrage is about what is the government going to do now, to avoid this situation in future.

The current situation is a result of systemic corruption. And if there isn't enough outrage now, 10 years down the line, it will happen again in many new areas on the downstream path of rainwater towards the rivers.

Do you think people in Mumbai or Chennai start celebrating when there's water-logging in their cities, and don't complain, and don't demand for action?

Not every problem gets solved by saying- "Hey, but that's not happening in older Bangalore, only in newer areas". Newer areas are where any city grows, and the policies being followed there decides what the city is going to end up being like in the next 10-20 years.

problems are not always proportional to such percentages related to natural calamities since it depends on what areas are affected, how many people have to travel through/to this area, what businesses/processes are dependent on those areas etc. any increase in flooding will likely accompany with more than proportional increase in problems

Born in Bangalore and have been living in bangalore for 30 odd years now.

This is not the first time this has happened and will not be last time. I remember swamp lands or catchment areas slowly getting encroached by buildings, it was very obvious what would happen during years of excess rain, but people who bought those houses/apartments were unaware of what they are getting into. 

But I've also never witnessed such rain continually, maybe one rain or two in an year. But like every day of the week? Nope. 

Lakes are usually dry at the start of rainy season and get filled up by the end of rains, this time lakes were filled in June and we received the 2nd highest rainfall in August in a century and its still raining like mad in September. Global warming is going to screw us.

Umm the flooding in the ORR has brought life to an almost grinding halt for the rest of the city too. The time it takes to travel from Sarjapur to Silk Board is now a matter of hours, traffic is piled up on Bannerghatta road and Hosur road, two major arteries that people in south and central Bangalore depend on. Trees are falling in south and north suburbs, roads are filled with potholes hidden in swirling water, taxis and autos have tripled their rates. Moreover the state of the posh residential colonies on Sarjapur road hurts all of us as we can all plainly see what is happening to the crores that people invested in their properties, and what exactly is happening in the name of better infrastructure.  Don't pretend like you are untouched just because you live elsewhere. In a city like Bangalore, with the offices in one direction and the residences in another, everyone is affected.

To those living in flooded areas, consider other neighborhoods, this is a problem that isn't going to have a quick fix, many of those are encroached lake beds, why pay exorbitant when there are other nice neighborhoods in the city. And people moving out may actually drive down demand and normalize rents in those areas.

Bellandur and Marathalli were never part of Bangalore, its an extension / outskirts of Bangalore. 

Greedy landlords have converted their lakes, gomala to sites. Majority of the people staying there are Non Bangaloreans. 

According BDA/ BBMP there were ~700 Rajakaluve previously, everything has been encroached. 

Sad to see that the innocent people are paying the price !

Try not to live or work in a low lying area, below 884 meters; but in some areas its higher - depends on surrounding areas. Like Queens road at 912 meters is prone to water as its lower than surronding areas. And in Bellandur Eco space, and other areas its 885 and lower that are more in danger
