I mean, it’s wonderful that the virus is generally evolving toward something that seems to be less severe during the initial illness, especially if you’re up-to-date on vaccinations. I know a few people who seem to have gotten this and they thankfully all had very short-lived, cold-like symptoms.

BUT, my biggest concern has always been and will always be long COVID. Until we have a resolution for that, I’ll never let up on my precautions. I understand it seems like being vaccinated lessens our chance of getting long-COVID, which is good news too, but I’m still not willing to risk it.

I agree that just because it’s milder doesn’t mean it’s preferable to get it, period! I’m hopefully approaching the end of my (first ever) infection with what I assume is JN.1, and my experience of having it has been quite mild. That said, I’m very happy with the precautions we took to avoid my spouse getting infected (so far so good), and you best believe I’ll be masking up when I go back out into the world for essential things! (Work, mostly.) Not being sick is still better than being mildly sick.

I just saw several articles saying this might be the most severe variant yet. 😅😭 And as others are saying, that doesn't even have to do with how horrible long covid is. Most people though seem to be saying this variant feels the worst so far. What's hard to know is if it is because it's actually worse, if it's because most are actually not up to date with vaccines, if it's because people's immune systems are wrecked by covid, or a combination of all of those.

"Mild" had always been a bullshit inaccurate measurement that never takes into account anything other than "but did you die?" 
No accounting for maiming, organ damage, strokes, lessened quality of life, long covid, etc. 




Seriously they pump this garbage out every single time a wave washes over us and it never ever pans out how the media wants it. Actual scientists consistently discuss how quickly this shit is evolving and becoming even more efficient at fucking us up than the ancestral strain, how it's constantly increasing it's virulence and it's ability to bond to ACE2 receptors. It is not getting more"mild", the media is simply trying to push the narrative that it is.

Assuming this was JN.1 for me, my recent infection had the most severe covid symptoms I have faced to date. I would easily take having mononucleosis AGAIN over this version of Covid. It was vastly different from previous infections too. Almost no respiratory symptoms. I did get an occasional slightly cough but nothing that occurred more than maybe 5-10 times in a half hour. 

Strictly and violently GI symptoms. I know they mean milder in terms of hospitalizations and deaths compared to the OG Omicron, but my god I hate the world mild here. And my god the symptoms are anything BUT mild. Ive seen so many people complaining of the same horrid abdominal cramping too. Far worse than any menstrual cycle or too-full stomach cramp feeling Ive ever faced before. The only thing that stopped me from going to the hospital, twice, is the fact that Missouri hospitals have absolutely insane wait times right now and I don’t want to pick up a secondary bacterial infection at the hospital where people are unmasked and hacking.

Honestly considering a follow up with my GI doc to make sure there isn’t something going on with my pancreas or other parts of my upper GI. 

Anyway, not to stray too far from the question. My tldr answer to thoughts - hate the world mild. Wildly false in terms of symptoms, severity of infection and longevity of infection. And that’s just the acute stage 😕Fuck covid. Fuck the word “mild”

The only thing mild should describe is the level of heat you want on your chicken wings.

I take anyone with "good news" about covid as a gaslighter. Even in otherwise reliable publications, there are those who really want to slip  through some disinformation. They are so tied to their tiresome narrative.

I will wait until there is a megastudy, from various reliable labs, far enough along that no one is hysterically rushing to publish.

FYI, there was something published today saying that in India, there is a JN.1 descendent, JN.1.11, with a number of troubling mutations. India is scrambling around to trace it.

Depends on what article you read, I guess. Most of what I have read so far is speculating JN.1 may be evolving to more closely resemble pre-Omicron variants that caused more severe disease.

Thing is mild means that you were not hospitalized in the acute phase, so mild doesn’t necessarily mean cakewalk. 

Also the article is talking about acute phase but what about long term? 

I don’t think hospitalization is an accurate metric to look at because the effects of covid seem to be manifesting long term.

Some of the recent news stories about covid-19 have felt reminiscent of the first two years of the pandemic. Due to a variant called JN.1 – sometimes called Juno – infection rates have been rising in many countries, with some initial claims that it could cause more serious illness.  
  
But in fact, the latest figures show that in England’s current wave, people who get infected are substantially less likely to get sick enough to need hospital treatment, compared with previous waves. This suggests that, on average, those who catch covid-19 have less to worry about than at any other time during the pandemic, says Paul Hunter at the University of East Anglia in the UK.  
  
JN.1, another version of the omicron variant, was first detected in Luxembourg in August and spread to numerous countries over the following months. Genetic sequencing showed it was significantly different from most previous versions of omicron and, by November, it became apparent that JN.1 was rapidly taking over.  
  
Those observations led to concerns that JN.1 would cause a large wave of covid-19 over the northern hemisphere’s winter, when hospitals would also be coping with high numbers of people with other seasonal respiratory viruses, such as flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).  
  
In December, [claims were made that the JN.1 wave was causing more severe illness](https://www.bbc.com/news/health-67726685), as many people haven’t had a covid-19 vaccine for some time. In the UK and many other European countries, autumn 2023 boosters were only offered to older people or those who met certain criteria, such as being medically vulnerable. Even in countries such as the US, where the vaccines are available to everyone older than 6 months, uptake has been low.  
  
As concerns over JN.1 mounted, there were calls to bring back various public health restrictions against covid-19. Some hospitals in the UK and the US, for instance, have reintroduced face masks in public spaces and last week Spain made mask wearing compulsory in all healthcare settings.  
  
Fortunately, the warnings of a bigger wave haven’t borne out so far. And in England, the current wave is causing less severe illness than ever before, as judged by the number of people the coronavirus is sending to hospital compared with the number who are known to be infected.  
  
For instance, the number of people testing positive for covid-19 in England amid its current wave seems to have peaked in mid-to-late December, at about 4.5 per cent of the population, according to a large, regular survey by the Office for National Statistics and the UK Health Security Agency. This is a similar proportion to that seen during the covid-19 wave that peaked in December 2022.  
  
Yet the number of people being admitted to hospitals in England primarily due to covid-19 seems to have peaked this winter at just over a third of the equivalent figure from the previous year – at about 1300 in early January 2024, compared with around 3300 a year ago. “On average, someone catching covid-19 in this wave is less likely to be admitted to hospital,” says Hunter.  
  
It is unclear whether the fall in severity is because JN.1 is intrinsically milder than other variants or if people just have more immunity to covid-19 now, thanks to past infections and vaccinations, even if they were administered some time ago. “I think immunity is probably playing a big role, but it may be that the latest variant is also less virulent,” says Hunter.  
  
However, even though an infected person’s risk of going to hospital may be lower than last year, the large numbers of people getting infected still adds to winter pressures on hospitals, says Stephen Griffin at the University of Leeds in the UK. “The number of people that end up going into hospital is still considerable.”  
  
Then there is long covid to consider, when people get symptoms such as lasting fatigue, breathlessness and cognitive problems. “These sorts of analyses focus on acute disease and hospitalisations,” says Griffin. “The clinical burden of long covid needs to be considered.” On the other hand, [less severe initial illness with covid-19 seems to correlate with a lower chance of lasting symptoms](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-021-01292-y).  
  
Part of the reason the JN.1 variant caused such concern initially was that it is genetically quite different from most previous omicron variants. It was about as big a genetic leap as omicron was compared with the former delta variant, says Michael Fuhrer at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. “I think people were right to wonder what was going to happen. But now that we’re getting data, it looks like omicron-size jumps are just not the same problem that they were in 2021. That’s really good news.”

That’s what they said about Omicron when it first came about, essentially  that it is “highly contagious, but mild effects” aka so don’t worry folks.

The after effects of a current strain can’t be spoken for until afterwards. So we don’t really know what JN.1 will wreak until it gets eclipsed by another strain in circulation in the future. The data now is incomplete in other words. Hindsight is 20/20.

People are no longer being tested for Covid when they come in. I know 3 close friends that had this crazy pneumonia thing going around, and they went to the hospital and were not tested for Covid..the crazy thing is, they DID test them for influenza! So the dismissal or hiding of Covid is starting at the Hospital levels. They no longer get funding for reporting cases, however they do get funding for reporting Influenza which is tracked to the T all the way down to the variant type.

"mild" symptomatology can mean the immune system has given up and allows the virus to do more damage. "Mild" can do a lot of damage that may not show up immediately. And who is this milder for? People who have had repeat infections? COVID benefits from damaging the immune system. I'm enraged every day by people trying to argue this virus is evolving to become less dangerous

If covid became 50x milder, in the short AND long term, and stayed that way for a year, yes, I would be willing to talk about it and debate whether that warranted lifting any precautions. Absent an extreme and clear reduction in severity like that, there is no need to get excited. I am sure JN.1 has already been displaced by the next 10 variants by now.

There hasn't been a significant difference since most people were infected with omicron. 

In the UK, the number of people being hospitalized due to  COVID-19 is 50% lower this winter compared to the previous year (https://ukhsa-dashboard.data.gov.uk/topics/covid-19). Even though the test positivity estimates for the whole population are similar to last year, the estimates for older adults are only around 3% for this year. You should also ideally compare total numbers and not just peak values, but it already doesn't look like there is a large difference. 

We also need to compare it to the data from other countries. For example, in the US, hospitalizations have decreased by 20-25%, while wastewater indicators have increased by 15-20%. However, these indicators don't perfectly correlate with the number of infections, nor can differentiate between infection rates among different demographic groups.

In this case it's talking about a virus in wild boar.   If this is true/accurate, then it makes sense that the virus would become milder, but what does it mean for people who will continue to carry the virus?   I don't think I want to be "exploited" by a virus, so probably I wouldn't step down my precautions.
