I don't get it. How can the SC decide this, when so many of the people affected are humanitarian cases with their decisions pending in the court system? What if some get a favorable decision after being deported? Plus everyone knows, that the "alien invasion" theory is groundless. How can this possibly be justified?!

This isn’t anything new. The administration has been trying to cancel the CHNV program for months. It was a Biden administration program that started in 2022 and allowed immigrants from 4 Latin American countries to enter the US legally if they had a US citizen sponsor. It was a 2 year program and the goal was for the parolees to be able to pivot into a visa, green card, or other longer term immigration program during the parole period. Ending the program would mean any immigrant who came to the US on the program and hasn’t secured a visa or GC up to this point will have to go back home. 

And it’s important to note, again, this was never intended to be a long term residency program. The point was to give parolees 2 legal years in the US to pivot into a longer term residency status.

Justice Jackson concedes, tacitly, that the government will succeed on the merits, but rests her opposition to the stay on "...precipitously upend\[ing\] the lives and livelihoods of nearly half a million noncitizens..." if the government is permitted to act.

Ultimately, though, what one administration can unilaterally confer, another may unilaterally remove. There's no real legal basis to consider the CHNV program a one-way ratchet, where parole status can only be granted and not removed.
