Gathering my thoughts here. Is this a disappointing obstacle to peace talks? Yes. I think de-militarization of both parties involved should be the goal (and should continue to be the ultimate goal). That said, is it surprising? No. 

I'm not particularly surprised that during an ongoing conflict that's spanned decades, where in which there have been war crimes (to Palestinians and to Israelis), and where they have seen their own massacred, that they would want to hold onto their arms as leverage. As awful as it is to think about, the hostages were leverage, giving that away means strategically that they are more vulnerable.

My guess is that this was approached with the assumption that since they are negotiating from a disadvantage that they would be willing to agree to a big step like disarmament. And, very clearly, they expect the war to continue, and Bibi and the rest of his government expects the war to continue. So it may be inevitable that any agreed ceasefire ends, and it keeps going.

I get the logic behind saying no, we will not agree without Hamas being disarmed. But, personally, I think the hostages are more important. I don't think gambling with their lives is better if you tell yourself you're saving other Israeli lives. Either way, the war continues.

As long as the status quo continues today with conditions as they are for Palestinians there will be violent resistance. In this way, even disarming Hamas if it were possible is kicking the can down the road (perhaps a longer road) until some other faction takes up arms. The only way to TRULY get rid of violent resistance is to withdraw the appeal of it. That means at minimum a path to a Palestinian state.

Without arms, the people of Gaza have no meaningful way to defend themselves from the forced ethnic cleansing plan of Trump/Bibi, given that they are not going to get many volunteers to leave Gaza on their own to settle somewhere random in Africa. Disarming one side without addressing the power imbalance will entrench occupation and domination. 

Disarming is effectively capitulation after the death of 60,000 to 200,000 people, with zero guarantee of safety as Israel has routinely broken every single deal it signs. Just look at how armed settlers treat unarmed Palestinians in the West Bank where there is no Hamas.

This seems like a pretty bad deal for Israel...The best thing we can say about it, is that maybe there are things that we don't yet know (that Israeli officials do know), similar to what happened with the Lebanese ceasefire, like the overthrow of Assad, and the complete removal of Iran / Hezbollah from Syria, which happened directly after the Hezbollah / Israel ceasefire, which many Israeli's similarly did not like. I'm guessing Trump made some big promises to Israel / Netanyahu in exchange for this.

Whether or not Hamas accepts the deal, what matters is what the U.S. will do. Will they make Israel end the war or not. It’s unclear but I think it’s unlikely at this point.

Having Hamas "surrender" at this point would be seen as caving into Israel's demands to control the whole strip. An ideal scenario is that Israel should surrender, apologize, pay for the rebuilding, withdraw from all Palestinian land stolen by Israel, and all of the men in power in Israel should resign and apologize and make reparations to Palestinians whose land they took. Then Israel should move to another location where they are not so hated, with the full cooperation of that other location and people. That did not happen in 1948-  which is when this animosity all started. Israel has basically stated its intention to kill every member of Hamas, so asking Hamas to put themselves in the hands of Israel is basically asking them to commit suicide.  If a surrender simply means that Hamas stops fighting, that's a cease fire, which Israel repeatedly rejects and violates when agreed to.  

Asking Hamas to surrender is disingenuous, because Israel will never agree to any restrictions on its ability to exert force in the area as it sees fit.  Israel will always do what it wants to do and that just means Palestinians will never be anything but second class citizens. 

Meanwhile, Israel is doing everything possible to motivate new recruits for Hamas, for which Hamas is undoubtedly grateful.

I need to start as always, that I do not write to defend Hamas, and find them abhorrent, I write to try to pragmatically address the situation from my own knowledge and viewpoint.

First, Hamas surrendering wouldn't end the siege, the occupation, or the suffering. Israel has not committed to any political roadmap for Palestinian self-determination. There’s no indication that “good behavior” will be rewarded with freedom. In fact, even when Palestinians have pursued diplomacy or nonviolence, as with the PLO's recognition of Israel in the 1990s, they were met with settlement expansion, assassinated leaders, and continued military control.

Second, to frame Hamas surrender as the gateway to a better life for Palestinians assumes that Israel's war aims are limited and humanitarian. Yet we’ve heard repeated statements from Israeli leaders denying a future for Gaza beyond indefinite control or “voluntary migration.” Many in the current government are openly annexationist or messianic. If Hamas were to disappear tomorrow, does anyone seriously believe Israel would lift the blockade, end the occupation of the West Bank, or allow Palestinian refugees the right to return?

Third, let's not pretend Israel is just "waiting for a better partner." Israeli governments had plenty of chances to support moderate leadership and build peace infrastructure, instead, they often undermined the PA, bolstered Hamas as a counterweight, and have consistently refused to define borders or accept meaningful international oversight.

Also, you mention that Hamas has no military capacity left. If that’s true, why is Gaza still being bombed? Why are hospitals, schools, and aid convoys being hit, even in so-called “safe zones”? The logic of total Hamas defeat is being used to justify indefinite collective punishment.

Finally, no one is saying Hamas is a force for good. Their attacks on civilians are war crimes. But surrender is not peace if the alternative is occupation by another name, without rights, sovereignty, or security.

If you want peace, it starts with ending the structural conditions that allow groups like Hamas to thrive in the first place: occupation, siege, statelessness. Without addressing those, calls for surrender are not pathways to peace, they’re demands for complete submission and domination, and right back to the pressure cooker.

I'd argue that Hamas view this fight as a last stand. Israel has made no secret of its intentions to remove Palestinians from Gaza, though it's not official government policy to kill every Palestinian, many Israeli groups say it. 

Hamas does not know that surrender will end the war. What if Israel keeps fighting after Hamas is gone? These are questions that every Gazan is asking. 

The options in such a scenario are fight and die or just die. I'm not Palestinian or Israeli but I know how I'd go out if my country faced a similar situation.
