How is this sustainable long term to Russia? Conservative estimates place their casualties at 100k plus. $300 billion already down the war hole. Reports are in that a third of their bomber fleet is destroyed. Black Sea fleet immobile… even if they manage to hold onto their current territory the costs of maintaining it will be another burden to their economy.

Yes Ukraine is suffering far worse in proportion, but the difference here is that Ukraine is trying to survive. Russia has no reason other than its own ambitions for its losses. How is this sustainable?? 

Imagine Russia invested that money back into their own people and infrastructure? Imagine they avoided 100k loss of their people?? No more sanctions? To be respected?

If anything has come out of this war we've seen drone warfare start to play a bigger role in conflict. It's gone from US Reaper drones taking out Houthis to things like Ukrainians dropping grenades on Russian troops with Amazon level toy drones. It's really scary how far this has all come and it may just be the underlying string of this conflict that people are missing. Taking out 40 planes behind enemy lines is a huge victory for Ukraine and likely a morale booster.

Good. It makes peace less likely in the short term because of the humiliation, but more likely in the longer run by exposing fragility.

I think Trump's strategy is correct here. We, and Ukraine, cannot be the barrier to peace by taking insane stances like liberating all of occupied Ukraine and Crimea before considering negotiations. We had to bully Zelensky to get to that point, but we're there now.

With that said, if Russia isn't willing to negotiate yet, we can support the Ukrainian cause with a clear conscience until an acceptable offer comes forward.

(1) Very impressive technically and logistically. If they pulled it off without foreign intelligence aid, even more so.

(2) Pretty much useless tactically: the types of strategic bomber that were primarily destroyed are pretty useless in the current conflict. Right now, all they do is drop cruise missiles from very far away, but this is mostly a psychological tactic as this kind of bombing is too expensive to sustain, has limited firepower, and doesn't have much impact on the ground. Aircraft like these primarily exist for nuclear bombing capability and to inspire fear because their reach and precision is almost unlimited.

(3) Very bad for the world. This will probably be the end of the non-concealment provision of START. Previously, the nuclear nations agreed not to conceal nuclear bombers and ICBM launch facilities. This allows every nuclear nation to monitor every other nuclear nation by satellite so nobody thinks a nuclear bomber they can't find is airborne and about to destroy them, which is very, very important for not accidently triggering a nuclear apocalypse. That's why in the videos of the destruction, these super expensive highly technical aircraft are just chilling out in the open or in a simple hanger. Now Russia will just hide these things and other nuclear powers will follow, which vastly increases the risk of an incident where some nation thinks another is about to nuke them.

This is likely a NATO backed move in response to Russia's partial withdrawal from START in 2023 and is typically dumb as rocks.
