I decided to make this after the destruction of Hurricane Helene in the American south a couple weeks ago. I’ve wanted to make[ another climate change disaster post](https://www.reddit.com/r/imaginarymaps/comments/189vzdh/the_great_prairie_fire_of_2026/) but never had the right mix of time and motivation, but after that recent tragedy I got inspired. This scenario is based off of a book I read, *The Ministry for the Future*, by Kim Stanley Robinson where India experiences a major heatwave in the first chapter. I always wanted to bring such a horrific event to life, although it may have come out a little edgier than I intended.

I do believe that we will see tragedies on this scale sometime in the future, perhaps not as soon as 2026 (I picked that date because I like making it seem just around the corner and connecting it to ongoing leaders) (although our models consistently underestimate climate change), but mass death events are a major threat. India already experiences heat waves sticking to 49 °C (120 °F) for weeks at a time. One unlucky weather pattern and that can very severely escalate. 

I also picked India for this because it is a very important country, and will likely at some time soon find itself on the frontline against climate change. As of October 2024 the country has 1.42 billion people and makes up 17.8% of the human population. All of those people, living very close to the equator, will be affected by this man-made disaster, and much sooner and with much more harm than those in the Global North.

I do still feel this is rather surface level. I am by no means an expert on Indian politics or how their society and culture functions. I didn’t know India had two houses of parliament until less than a week ago. And while I have been reading up on climate change quite a bit, I know I am still quite unfamiliar with the science behind it. What this lacks in depth I hope it makes up for in making the audience scared for the near future.
