Update from Graz:

No official confirmation regarding the number of dead and injured yet, the police special forces are in the process of clearing the school, staff and students have been evacuated.
A police helicopter is still circling the area, it might not be certain that there was only one perpetrator or that he really did kill himself.
Still lots of ambulance sirens to be heard (I live close to the trauma hospital)

-Update 1:
7 students dead (including the shooter)
1 adult dead (most likely a teacher)

-Update 2:
Police state that the situation is under control, they do not anticipate there to be any further danger. I can no longer hear the police helicopter in the area.

-Update 3:
The perpetrator was a former student, so could have legally owned weapons, depending on his age. He is said to have shot up (for lack of a better word) 2 class rooms. Death toll has risen to 9 according to the ministry or internal affairs.

-Update 4:
10 Dead, around 30 injured, 7 of which seriously. All 7 are currently in operation, 2 are in critical condition. Supposedly, the perpetrator was 22 years old and legally owned the 2 weapons -a pistol and a shotgun- he is said to have carried with him. 160 red cross personell including crisis intervention teams were and are still on duty.

-Final Update:
Confirmed: 21 year old Austrian national, did attend the school but did not finish (graduate).
Of the 9 victims, 6 were female, 3 were male. Deathtoll rises to 11.

To my Austrian friends, I am so sorry to read about this. It is devastating. May those families be surrounded by the community with love and safety. Where I live, school shootings and serious violence happen about 40 times a year - no joke. Sometimes, one isolated injury or death, and sometimes multiple injuries or deaths. The community will take years and years to recover. The families affected will never recover. Take care of each other and stay safe.

"Austrian national" will always make people think it's an immigrant. It's certainly what it makes me think. 

When that car drove into people at the Liverpool victory parade the police were very quick (within an hour) to release the full ethnicity of the suspect (white and British). When the child of immigrants murdered children at a dance class within the jurisdiction of the same English police force they released nothing more than "British national" for 4/5 days, and that was only because people rioted.

There is a risk of inflaming racial tensions if the ethnicity of the suspect is released, but if it isn't released people will assume it's not a "native" European, just a citizen. Even more so if a "white native" is immediately described as such. 

I'd say I'm left wing in general, but the left being blind to the lack of social cohesion in our multicultural utopia are exactly the people that make that social cohesion more difficult to achieve. 

It might be a white guy, he might be a neo-nazi, he might be having a psychotic break. Might be a she. I don't know. But if you've shot the suspect dead - or believe you've shot the suspect dead - you will not prejudice any future trial by giving a brief physical description.

As an American, I’m shocked that the two guns were legal for the killer. Sadly, young men are getting angrier and violence is becoming more common everywhere. Not just the US. 

Sorry, but if you aren’t a police officer, you shouldn’t be able to buy powerful guns. Hopefully Austria can look at the UK or Australia as how to respond after a school shooting.
