Dude picked the worst time for a shore leave. Guess the Black Sea fleet isn’t the only thing Ukraine’s sinking these days. Kinda wild how their naval officers keep ending up as land-based casualties. Maybe they should rebrand as the Russian "Mostly On Land But Occasionally At Sea" Navy.

He was a Russian Major-General, which is I believe roughly the equivalent of a Brigader / one-star general in western military. That quite a senior rank to die and might be the ninth Major General to be killed.

Unfortunately Russia cares for no one outside the Kremlin. They need to find a way to bump off a few four star generals to make the military start reconsidering it's future.

I read [the story](https://istories.media/en/news/2025/04/25/son-of-cia-deputy-director-joined-russian-army-and-was-killed-in-the-war-in-ukraine/) of his journey through Europe, and it's equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying.

He was an idealist. A touch naïve, and perhaps a bit *too* curious. A leftist, anti-fascist, anti-war, environmentalist hippie who grew disillusioned with the American political landscape and left for Europe to do charity and relief work. 

The story isn't clear on when exactly the propagandizing started, but he was broke and couch-surfing in Russia, and a week later he was enlisted in the army, fully convinced that he was still acting within his principles.

His death is a stark reminder of the power of indoctrination, and a warning that no one is immune, no matter how principled you think you are.
