These are sanctions on individual companies. Meaning they cannot access US financial system or do business with US. I would imagine they already aren't doing any business with US or else why would they purchase oil from Iran?

The fact that he can secure a strategic gain either means it is not actually a net good, or more concerningly, liberals cannot. Liberals have to ask themselves "why don't we use our power effectively?"

In some cases the answer is clear. Blockading Yemen would cause a humanitarian catastrophe. Bombing Iran was only necessary because of Trump's other, bad actions. Certainly it was not as effective as it should have been. 

This case deserves consideration though. Why was the Biden admin so unwilling or unable to pressure India? Had this happened in 2023 things would be better. Making Harris the face of the saber rattling might have even helped her in the election, because we all know Biden couldn't have a hard chat with anyone. Maybe actually doing things before the debates would have been the reality check he needed.

Damn it's not just trade partners caving to Trump on tariffs... Good move. [India bought almost 50 Billion Euros worth of Russian oil just in 2024](https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/india-imports-49-billion-worth-of-russian-oil-in-3rd-year-of-ukraine-invasion/article69261150.ece). This will significantly help starve Russia of the foreign money they desperately need to keep their heavily-militarized economy afloat. The only way Russia has been able to sustain its economy through all these sanctions has been because of the massive militarization of their economy and basically turning into a total wartime economy funded by foreign fossil fuels sales. That itself is starting to see some major strains on their economy and now India's decision will compound that. So good move by Trump here. With Trump willing to sell Ukraine weapons that even Biden didn't want to send and now this, it does seem like Trump is NOW being tougher on Russia that Biden was. We will see if it lasts but this is a great sign. Thank you Rubio &amp; Bessant!!!

The question is where is India gonna get their oil from. We could sell them a good amount but I doubt it would make up for the numbers they bought from Russia. Someone else more educated could probably step in here

Insight from an Indian here, take it with a pinch of salt.

1. There are 2 types of oil companies that have own refineries - government owned (60% capacity), and private (40% capacity). The news is that only government oil companies have paused importing from Russia. What will happen is gulf oil that went to private companies will be rerouted to government companies and Russian oil will be sent to private companies instead of government companies.

2. This is just a pause, once this news reaches Donald Trump and he acknowledges in public, the import will be resumed.

3. Russian oil import will be better hidden going forward.

Let’s not twist the timeline here. Right after the Ukraine war started Europe rushed to the Middle East to secure oil supplies placing massive orders and effectively driving up prices. To make matters worse they bypassed or did not care of existing contracts and prior commitments with other nations, including India. So India had to turn to the only major supplier left willing to sell at a discount Russia.

And let's not forget, the Middle East has been very clear: they won’t pump more oil just to ease global prices. OPEC+ has repeatedly stated they won’t increase output just because the West wants cheaper energy.

Also, the irony here is rich while Europe tries to virtue signal by banning Russian crude, it still continues to buy Russian LNG. So yeah, if we’re talking about “hypocrisy,” maybe take a good hard look at where the pipelines and tankers are still headed. India was just balancing its energy security while the so-called moral gatekeepers scrambled to save face.
