I'm not thinking about these at all, if you get trade deal with 15% tarrif, then 25% is like nothing. If we see long term horizon, India needs to heavily focus to become an manufacturing hub. The majority revenue still comes from service sector. AI is coming and in future, u know I know what is going to happen ultimately.

It's culturally fucking hard because Indian culture is not detail oriented, and disregards the final finishing touch.

Without changing this, it's very hard to make progress.

You can see this just by the difference in service between Amazon and Flipkart. Both are US owned but Flipkart was home grown. So their attitude towards customer service is Indian minded.

This is all too common. Even when an Indian company charges a premium price for a product or service, they don't consistently maintain a high standard. Manu have noticed this especially outside India where an Indian restaurant is staffed by mostly Indians or Locals. 

It's not that Indians can't do it, Indians when among others do fine, but when it's Indian top down, there's this complacency about not going the last mile for the customer experience.

Edit: this low effort/complacency is also known in software world. Indian software exports are known to be cheap and sloppy. But reasonable price and respectable quality is where the value creation happens. This is how China eventually excelled.

If these companies provide so little differentiated value, surely Indian brands can do the same (and avoid being double taxed in US  and India) generating higher returns. Alternatively, if US brands are overwhelmingly more effective either through operational efficiency or profits from economic scarcity (owning premium real estate or exclusive supply chain contracts) then Indian firms are better investing excess capital in US stocks. I think the reality is neither, US firms have selective edge in product development and Indian firms have management ego problem. This leaves Indian consumers paying for the inefficiency through imported goods.

 Currently Indian tariff are high in most items under the pretext of 'protecting local business ' or 'anti-dumping' measures. 
 
While it's a risk, India should consider relaxing tariffs and create a free trade practices. Indian businesses can compete and will compete in free marketplace.

After I started my startup, I sold huge no  of electronics on ClubFactory which Zero fees for platform, my projection was to reach 1 cr sale in year until, in covid our govt banned it. While I was getting screw on Amazon than Flipkart. Now they have monopoly on everything. Lets bring Chinese here on 50:50 partnership  give them access to our economy in exchange of Money and Tech. Only then we can survive and have our own industry.

My view: No matter what tariff rates are fixed, the Indian and the US economy will get used to it. 

There will be some sector specific short term advantages or disadvantages. But the entrepreneurs will find a way to do business together. Tariffs are not bad for India. They are bad for the US as well. 

No country can live in seclusion in this globalized world. The markets do not like uncertainty. Even if it is 25%, the markets will discount this news this week itself. 

6 months from now, we will not even talk about tariffs. Do not panic. Stick to the good stocks in your portfolio. 

One year from now, you will see good returns in your portfolio.

The way I see it this :

These tariffs are just an import tax paid by the importer. So, these 25% tariff on India would've hurt us if other countries are at 0%. As then, Indian goods will become expensive in US.
But this is just an arm twisting tactic. US is not the only trade partner of India. India also has a robust domestic market. Let the Americans shoot themselves in the foot. We should just wait patiently and weather the foolishness.

Indian markets seems unfazed. India is growing rapidly and one great thing is unlike China which focuses heavily on export led growth, India's export is not something that completely props up the growth. However, India needs to massively ramp up domestic consumption, manufacturing and deep tech innovation which requires capex, again which is concentrated in USA

Bunch of whatapp analysts on this site, Just try importing anything into India and the customs charge anywhere from 50% to 100%. Recently I had to get items from another country as it isnt available anywhere in India. The cost of the items was just $300. Well I had to pay another Rs. 12k at the time of delivery which is including GST on the entire amount and then some total bullshit called Social Welfare surcharge. The gov collects GST and keeps it all for itself as there is no ITC credit since the seller is from another country.

The gov rips everyone off with tariffs.

Some of this (the numbers) is random, some of it made up by Trump being delusional. You can look at other countries - Canada has an even higher tariff now. That is Trump punishing "nasty Canadians". He is abusing the economy to penalise people in other countries. (The numbers seem almost AI-generated random dice being rolled ... at the least I see no objective economic rationale behind any of that.)

What is, however had, interesting is that the tariffs on Pakistan are lower than on India. This is fascinating because China also has supportive ties to Pakistan yet the USA used to claim India could be the "counterbalancing force" to China. Now, the USA is just abusing countries here in general, so nobody should buy Trump's narrative, but what does it mean when the USA penalises Pakistan less than India? We keep in mind here that Pakistan sends terrorists into India - perhaps not all of the government, but I am quite sure some in the government, as well as regional terrorist bosses. So Trump ultimately awards countries that send terrorists more than countries do not. How is that fair? It also means the USA has Pakistan as a more important geopolitical focus. Besides, of course, these tariffs can change willy-nilly randomly anyway, but it is still very interesting nonetheless. India should keep a very, very close eye to the USA buddying up with Pakistan. That's not new either - see how the Taliban were supported in the 1980s against Soviets (in Afghanistan, but Pakistan was a primary proxy for that support); and lateron as well. History repeats itself here. I still think Modi's course of more and more escalation against Pakistan is wrong, from a geopolitical point of view. IMO it would really be better if India and Pakistan were to resolve all border and land disputes. I am fully aware that this is probably not possible in our generation (Kashmir conflict situation is about 100 years old now, give or take), but eventually it really should be resolved completely, one way or another (as to how, that's up to diplomacy; it strikes me as very stupid to resort to war as that is not usually a good way to resolve a situation. See also Cambodia and Thailand recently, though that was on a smaller scale).

I don’t believe this will strengthen China-India relations. At current climate, 25% does not look so terrible for India. The Indian economy relies heavily on domestic consumption and exports are more about tech service, so a 25% tariff on India differs from one on Korea, Taiwan, Germany, or Japan which exports automobiles and semiconductors.

However, if more measures are taken against India due to Russian oil or weapons, China will likely exploit India significantly and India will have some difficulty retaliating or coping with a situation. Also, how Trump sets tariff rates against China, Pakistan and Bangladesh will influence India's situation.

No it won't. India and Pakistan hate each other. China loves Pakistan. China looks down on India. Indians see China as a threat to their existence.

There's no trust between the two countries. Quite the opposite in fact. They spy on each other like there is no tomorrow.

The only way it will mend is if India gives into Chinese demands and accepts the Chinese hegemony like all India's neighbors (Bhutan still pending).
