It is true for military war (like Russia is doing) . It is true for economic war (like US is doing) .

- more countries diversifying their trade relationships and not forge strong dependence on one of the economic powers

- Europe cannot afford a long stretched war of attrition (UKR - Russia) 
- Russia is willing to continue forever because it seems they have endless supply of people who are willing to die 
- US has already said that they are only going to sell weapons. That’s their main contribution ever since Trump came to power 
- Europe is not going to go for a war directly with Russia 
- For US it is much better to get a bad deal for Ukraine, claim a win, and get on with rare earths 

So the only option is negotiated settlement. The problem is that discussion is happening between Russia and US. Both of them don’t care about Ukraine. 

But European leaders have no contact with Russia, so without US there wouldn’t be a negotiation at all. Only China or US can be mediator. It might be weird but China might be able to get better deal for Ukraine than what US can mainly because they have leverage over Russia. US has leverage only over Ukraine.
