Lot more complicated than it’s stated here. Yes SU-57 is inferior. But Russian jets have always fallen behind in electronics compared to western jets. 

India spent $6 billion on this program and then pulled out. They have since spent their time modifying SU-30 to carry modern home made BVR weapons as well as Israeli weapons. And not buying SU-57, says a lot about what they think about SU-57.

I'd say that as long as the SU-57 can break undetected long enough inside enemy air defenses so it can fire cruise missiles or other long range weaponry with precision, it can be qualified as good enough.

But that begs the question of why, if the SU-57 is at least stealthy enough, the Russians aren't using them to effectively destroy Ukrainian air defenses.

Soviet Union/ Russia always had good engineers. But having good engineers is not enough to produce combat effective equipment. 

You need scale, quality control, and no corruption in supply chain and a lot of investment.

The same way Superjet and other programs failed. Russia hasn’t produced anything cutting edge for a loooong time.

Depends on which variant, the one people love talking about is the T-50 due to its lack of stealth. The T-50 is the variant with “wooden screws” the revealed air intakes, and exposed engine, it’s important to note that the T-50 is a prototype, and is the one that has mostly been lost in accidents. The T-50 is the variant that has the same RCS as the F/A-18s.

The next variant is the Su-57, a pre-production variant. The Su-57 lacks stealth coatings, but is more refined than the T-50s in terms of avionics. It has a slightly smaller RCS than the T-50 due to more radar absorbent technologies.

The production variant is known as the Su-57M, which would have made more sense if they designated as the Су-57С (Su-57S, as in serial). This variant is the one going into production, as stated previously. It has by far the most refined, having the most advanced avionics and RAM coatings. According to calculations by a Japanese team (showcased on the YT channel of Grim Reapers’s video titled “F-35 vs Su-57 With RAM Stealth Coating: BVR Missile Battle &amp; Dogfight | DCS”), the Su-57M (with IRST closed) has a frontal RCS of 0.006 meters squared (IRST open being 0.01 meters squared). The Su-57M’s systems are definitely integrated into one another, with them beginning to experiment by integrating the S-70 Okhotnik-B’s controls in the Su-57’s systems. So this I conclude:

T-50: 4.5th Generation
Su-57: 4.9th Generation
Su-57M: 5th Generation

Overall, saying the Su-57 isn’t stealth is generalizing far, far too much.

My very late however I would like to comment on that. The Su 57 has a radar cross section of 0.1m which is very tiny. However the F-35 has a radar cross section of 0.0001 which is VERY tiny. The thing is we don’t know much about the Su 57 as it is still highly classified so we cannot really comment on it. Maybe it can be the raptor killer or a failed project who knows?

Su 57 is both LO and has at least some degree of integration, including support for loyal wingman operations.  

It's been operating in Ukraine (like literally *in* Ukraine) for at least all of this year, and we have evidence of it being well inside of Ukraine air defense with the recent shoot down of their heavy drone/wingman a few months ago.

At the Zuhai Airshow, Russia is promoting it as the only platform demonstrated to defeat Patriot, and considering it's been operating in theater and well inside Ukrainian air defense for the last year, there's no reason to believe it isn't LO enough to at least defeat Patriot and NASAMS.  

Until Ukraine starts fielding an air force which operates near the front lines, there isn't a ton the Su 57 can do better than existing systems, especially when cheap drones are able to do the same tasks with less risk.  

It's pretty likely some of the more devastating air strikes over the past year have been the result of Su-57/S-70 tandem, and they continue to be a huge part of the degradation of Ukrainian air defenses which have allowed a ton of geraniums to hit their targets.  Watching the official Ukrainian air defense reporting go from reporting 100% intercept rate to under 50% intercept rate recently has been pretty eye opening.  

Even if it "isn't as good" as other 5th gen platforms, it's proving *effective.*

Props to the pilot but this plane is legit useless outside of air shows. They look cool, that’s it. Not enough of them have been built to be effective and they’re unable to really build more. Russia hasn’t even deployed them any differently than their Gen4 fighters because their capabilities aren’t any different.
