Those last few seconds is something I didn't think was possible. The ground is bouncing in several feet. As someone who's not lived in a very active earthquake area (knock on wood after seeing this), I have both a new respect for seismic power and a profound sadness for the people and animals caught in it. Both amazing and gut wrenching.

I happened to be in Kathmandu, Nepal during the 7.8 quake in 2015. The way I could best describe it was that if felt like you were all of a sudden standing in a boat going over a bunch of waves. May sound like no big deal but when it’s the whole earth and the buildings are swaying with the “waves” it’s scary as shit. Dunno if it was the same feeling in Turkey as this looks more violent than I remember though they were technically the same magnitude.

To me earthquakes are the most confusing and scary occurrences on earth by far. Land always seems like the one constant to protect against disasters or incidents whether it be getting to higher land or going underground. That safe feeling you get when you get off an airplane and walk on solid ground that feels like it hasn’t moved in a billion years. Then, to see it bounce up and down like a trampoline, blending all the soil beneath it? Like what!!!

I've posted elsewhere but I think it bears repeating.  I was at the epicenter of the Northridge quake in 94.  It was a thrust fault, so when it hit, I woke up in the air.  Then my room felt like it was being shoved 6 feet back and forth.  I was amazed that a building could shake that much and not fall down.

That was a 6.7.  This one in Turkey was a 7.7.  Something like 30 times the energy.  Un freaking believable!

I saw people were saying the contractors that built the houses and building were corrupt and not built to common standards. And that may be true…. But… ain’t nothing gonna survive that. Any building would collapse from that.

This just the stuff of nightmares.after seeing this type of activity coupled with the loses, the destruction you name it , i almost went to the hospital from a panic attack .. this just too much. And for a place of poor people too..

Realistically, what are your options? Lay as flat as possible on stable (monolithic) ground? Look for sand or some sort of foam pit to suppress the vibrations? Genuinely curious, this is a terrible experience and im sure hiding under a table isnt the best way to go…

I was in an 8.2 in Guam in the 90s.  We were having a big block party on military housing.  It started with mild shaking and a roar I can only describe as something a monster would make.  The sound got so loud I could barely hear.  The ground looked like the ocean with 2-4 foot tall waves.  My sister was freaking TF out and ran to me and my friends mom.  She caught one of the waves and it threw her into the air.  Cars in the neighborhood were bouncing a good foot completely off the ground.  I thought it would be shaking up and down like the movies.  Nope, the concrete looked like water and the ground rolled with waves.

To clear out any misunderstanding, I'm not trying to belittle what's happening over there, and hope people recover asap. 

Out of curiosity though, I wish there was a drone footage of the earthquake, or any earthquake... any camera that's on the ground (wall mounted or hand held) is going to give us an exaggerated effect because the camera itself is moving violently. The last few seconds of the video look crazy but notice the wheels of the cars are still touching the ground. Also the camera is working at some very low quality which leaves trails of the previous frames in the current frame, which makes it look like some parts of the ground are going up while others are going the opposite direction, which makes it again look like it's more violent than it is.

Obviously any earthquake is scary, what makes it scary isn't the shaking itself, people can survive that, but the buildings collapsing all around you, that's the only time you'd wish you lived in a tent. Tiny tremors very manageable in an open field like in the video, but they're deadly inside a city.

Nature is savage man, it doesn't care.
