No one can deny it. Nehru had a very hazy and foggy mind. His decision making was weak. This is not a claim thrown out of nowhere, if you see the Kashmir issue, China War all were blunders. Did BJP not do blunders during Atal Bajpai's term? Yes they did. But the scale of blunders is the question here. After independence, we needed someone like Lee Kuan Yew. What he did to Singapore is astonishing. Singapore also had multiple religions and languages. It was a smaller country... yess but the issues were somewhat on similar lines. While we gave them 80% of water we have not been able to utilise the 20% allocated to us. The rivers flow into Pakistan. Stopping that flow will require billions of dollars of infrastructure investment that we did not have money for. The one institution that funds this sort of infrastructure projects is the World Bank. This is just political posturing by BJP and Modi to project a strongman image, it’s not a realistic policy shift. Everyone knows Pakistan is a poor country and any serious reduction in water would mean massive famine. India understands that too. First off, it would take decades to actually build the dams and storage capacity needed to block or divert enough water to matter. Second, Pakistan wouldn’t just sit back. If you’re staring down famine, you either die or you fight and Pakistan has shown just last month it’s not afraid to fight. Five Indian jets were shot down, including Rafales, with ease and without a single shot fired back by the Indians and the difference is expected to grow as Pakistan adds J35 next year. That kind of performance reduces India to the status of Houthis poking holes in hangars or scratching up runways. So again, this “never restore” talk is bluster meant for headlines, not real policy.

It's not actually enforceable as India would have to build several new dams, there'd be a lot of negotiation, and ultimately we'd fire missiles at those dams.

Then we can have another skirmish, India will lose some aircraft, we'll get hit a few times and if it gets bad enough we'll run to China.

Pakistan wastes more water every year from the Indus River flow than India was allowed according to the erstwhile IWT. While India has built extensive catchment and irrigation infrastructure Pakistan has used their resources to build their military and terrorist infra. If they can’t be bothered to use the water, they don’t deserve it. Maybe this will be a wake up call for that country. Maybe they’ll mend their ways and stop prioritizing “bleeding India through a thousand cuts” (self acknowledged Pakistani military policy).
