What we need to do is pressure the US any way we can. As you can see trump has been dickriding tim cook which got us the smartphone exemption and the people in america will literally eat trump if medicine prices rose after he tried to remove health support to people resulting in pharma exemption. What India needs is to become the only scale supplier of as many crucial goods as possible, not the cheapest, the ONLY one. Trump or any other US president will not allow India to be the new China. So they will not allow a big low wage country transform into a developped rival like China. So, the best path for India is cooperation and trade within the framework of the Global South. The same applies to Europe, they also will close the doors, as they are 'friends' aka vassals of the US. And yes, products in the West will be more expensive and the west will weaken, but that is how the western political mindset works. The sole reason many indian companies haven't gone bankrupt is because india charges heavy duties on imports but other countries don't on indian products. Trump tariffs are extremely fair, if anything, it should be 100%+

India’s economy is pretty well shielded from the US. They just aren’t the same economies. India has way more to gain from cheap Russian oil than it has to gain from a trade relationship with the US. Now if the US were to impose tariffs on outsourced cheap labor, that’s a different story.

India's exports to the US are about $130 billion in a $3.9 trillion dollar economy. Trump assumes a level of dependency that doesn't exist.  They have a long history of remaining unaligned, and Modi is a nationalist.  I don't know anything about Indian politics, but can Modi afford to look weak? It seems like Indian retaliation has been a lot of smoke and mirrors so far.

For example the government denied a Reuters report that they were pausing US weapons purchases.

This is another unsourced “rumor of tariffs” instead of an official announcement. It’s a good way to satisfy Modi’s nationalist base without escalating very far. Of course, it could escalate if a deal isn’t reached.

Trump at some event in the middle east mid-speech made some frivolous comment on how *"India &amp; Pakistan should y'know maybe go out on a dinner together"* while Rubio and Vance laughed along, in the audience.

Indians have never fully trusted the Americans, not after what Nixon did to us (Nixon/Kissinger sided with their favourite, blue eyed boy Pakistan as the Pakistanis unleashed genocide upon the Bengalis in what is today Bangladesh. India assisted and liberated these victims and Nixon sent his "7th fleet" to Indian waters to threaten us, Soviets joined in and defended India earning them huge goodwill amongst Indians)

I think they are definitely set back a few years at the very least for any progress that was made in last 20 years, and that is with the fact that Modi gov is pro-west.

Time fixes everything but Trump will have to be gone. Until then, its cautious management of the relationship, at best.

Correction: How can US-Everyone ties recover from American bad faith?

The Republican party removing Trump could absolutely repair (some of) the damage caused by his administration but the chances of that happening are slim to none.

Between Bush and Trump (both serving two terms), Obama might seem like a fluke to younger people outside of the US, especially Europe and Asia. So there's a real possibility of American foreign policy's worst fear being realized: A Euro-Sino détente. 

Although, bipartisan fear of a European-Chinese alliance could ironically push Americans to overcome political polarization, which makes one wonder if Trump and those around him are intentionally trying to push Europe into China's arms. 

Not to be conspiratorial but the implication of that is that he may well deliver on his threat of annexing Greenland, possibly even Iceland as well to buttress Greenland's empty and vulnerable east coast.

They can’t. US-India strategic partnership is effectively dead at this point. I do not expect India to continue to remain a functional part of Quad for much longer. Indian weapons purchases of U.S. are going to decline and there will be detente between India and China.

The world will heal quickly if the US can rid of Trump’s corruption and taint. Good US leadership is comfortable and easy.  Money and security flows freely and that’s a powerful force.
