As much as people dog on Netanyahu, and the rest of Israeli army/generals etc, if you were one of these national leaders you most likely would have snapped a while ago. Netanyahu has the ability to end it within 30 seconds of me posting this, but he dosent, a) because there are still hostages b) to show that Israel is willing to compromise and c) i have spoken with a couple of idf soldiers who names and sources won't be given out due to privacy and saftey concerns, and they told me that they have given up countless amounts of intel that could be used to stop hamas just because their were civilians amongst them. Israel isnt worried of how the world will react, because truthfully they Israel doesn't care enough. Of course there are left wing movements in Israel. 

The largest one is called The Democrats *HaDemoqratim*, the latest evolution of a joint Meretz+Avodah (i.e. Labour) party, led by Yair Golan. [According to recent polls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_next_Israeli_legislative_election?wprov=sfti1#Seat_projections) (from the last few weeks), should an election take place now it’d receive about 9-11 seats in the Knesset (the Israeli parliament), out of 120 seats, so about 7.5%-9% of the seats. Pretty significant. [Recently Golan had this to say this about the war](https://www.timesofisrael.com/after-controversy-yair-golan-says-of-course-israel-doesnt-kill-gaza-babies-as-a-hobby):

&gt; Israel is on the way to becoming a pariah state, like South Africa was, if we don’t return to acting like a sane country. A sane country does not fight against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not set itself the aim of expelling populations.

Although he later clarified, saying:

&gt; I wasn’t speaking about the military at all. I didn’t say that… I said something simple: that it’s unacceptable that we’re resuming fighting in Gaza, and that the political goals set for the IDF, which unfortunately are not goals connected to Israel’s national security at all… [Israel’s actions] are shaped by people with such a worldview [i.e. Smotrich and Ben Gvir]… I don’t recall these people ever being asked to apologize for anything. Is this the Israel we want? I genuinely ask myself that.

So he’s for fighting Hamas and releasing the hostages, but he thinks Israel is doing that badly, and blames Israel’s misconduct on the far-right elements within Israel’s current government. This is pretty much the consensus in Israel’s political left. 

There are also other leftist parties:

* Hadash (the evolution of Israel’s communist party), a joint Arab-Jewish party, albeit mostly Arab, that’s projected to get 4-6 seats in the Knesset (as they have historically)

* Ra’am, an all-Arab party which was also part of the last ruling government ([the 36th government](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty-sixth_government_of_Israel?wprov=sfti1#) AKA the Bennett-Lapid government AKA “The Government of Change” [as in, without Netanyahu], 13 June 2021-29 December 2022) and is projected to get 5-6 seats. 

* Balad, also an all-Arab party, albeit much less conciliatory towards Zionism (yes, there have been political parties within the Knesset that literally oppose the country’s existence). Most polls project that they won’t make the cut (a party needs to get at least 3.25% of all the votes to get seats in the Knesset). 

Israel’s political climate is kinda unique, combining both Western features (e.g. democracy, coalition rule, etc.) with Middle Eastern features (e.g. tribalism, religious political parties, etc.). Haviv Rettig Gur, an Israeli journalist and senior analyst for the Times of Israel, has an excellent [podcast episode](https://youtu.be/lq4pZXRw_VE?si=MDIaoGXiWh1rZZxk) about it (as well as other things, like the ongoing Judicial Reform/Overhaul/Coup [the name changes based on political alignment]). 

Woke politics, at the state level, don’t really exist in Israel. It’s a very Western phenomenon. There are many organizations that could be considered woke, but the political discourse within Israel is so drastically different than in the West that it didn’t manage to catch on.

Labor and Meretz merged into one party and are pretty pro-war, maybe their position is more like to bomb Gaza less hard. Before the war and before the 2022 riots Meretz were actually trending non-Zionist, they had a major realignment to be more right wing after they lost all their seats. But I mean only on national security. But in general I think Israel moved pretty right wing on national security given we in the middle of a war.

"Woke", really there there is no big culture wars here on anything except religion, and that is more around military service. Bizarrely, Israel is a pretty religious and conservative country, with right wing politics, and yet the most LGBTQ+ country per capita in the world. This is were you have gay people who are very right wing, it's not strange at all here. 

Part of the reason why there is no big culture wars is because there is war war. I think once people get bombed on daily, we just got bombed today, they stop fighting these culture wars.

Essentially, Israel was founded as a socialist state but moved to a social democratic economic model similar to Scandinavian countries. There are basically no prominent advocates in politics for an American style Laissez Faire capitalism. So economics is not a major dividing issue in israeli politics.

The Israeli left is primarily associated with the peace movement, both by its supporters and detractors. The major split between the patriot left of Mapai/Avoda and radical left of Mapam/Meretz has to do with this core issue, with patriotic left being favored by the military and security services while eventually supporting peace and the radical left having various concepts for peace, including binational, two-state solution, or full annexation (this movement has become rightist after the second intifada). 

Avoda and Meretz merged into the democrats (bad name imo) and are polling around 10%. I support them, though I think they could be doing a much better job and if they do, have the potential of absorbing the centrist Yesh Atid and Gantz party.

The core reason this happened was because 1. Israeli politics is very "leader centric" where the party leader is kind of a dictator and the other members are his goons. Avoda has a long history of big characters competing with eachother, but that has basically evaporated. 2. The debate of what to do with peace has basically been sidetracked because the peace process died of a thousand cuts. They still want peace, but it is more important to solve root issues like economic exploitation in the West Bank and tearing down reactionary Palestinian forces. You aren't going to have peace when Palestinian leaders keep endorsing and fomenting genocidal language and Palestinians are in their full right to resist the destruction of their welfare at the hands of settlers. I agree with Yair Golan with addressing these problems. 

Unfortunately, many Israelis are blinded by a combination of warlust and hatred by the international community and as a result are not thinking rationally or strategically. That actually has been a constant problem with Israelis' political self consciousness; its entirely in the hear and now at the expense of the past and future.

As far as "wokeness" is concerned, that's such a vague term that is basically meaningless. If you mean is there the antizionist types in Israel, there is, but I'd say that even though I disagree with them, they are not as bigoted as westerners are and often actually understand root issues and how to engage in politics. Western antizionists are basically a cult with no understanding of how to actually achieve anything (their biggest self described victory was helping to elect Donald Trump) and they only engage with the conflict as a emotional and spiritual venture. I'd say antizionist Israelis often do have insights into interrogating the nationalist myths of the country that are repeated ad noseum, though I have my disagreements. It is important to have auteurs and non conformists in your culture as you will end up like Arab states have; Israel is strong because we can have "New Historian" types who question ourselves and hold ourselves to a high standard. Arabia and Palestine specifically has no new historians, Noone who questions the narratives and myths, no nobody who holds truth to power. As a result, their jiggoism has rotted their institutions and polity and made their bid for sovereignty almost impossible.

This 'Israel is the good guy' schtick wore out its usefulness early on in Israel's attacks on Gaza. Coleman was initially denying that Israel was using disproportionate force and committing war crimes. Now he's quietly conceding this, but maintaining the 'Israel is the good guy' schtick -- I guess that claim remains a truism for him up until Israel declares genocidal intentions on the same level as the most extreme utterances out of Hamas.  Maybe ask whether this framing is particularly useful?  This war needs to end, Israel has to be more restrained, humanitarian assistance needs to be massively improved, Hamas needs to release hostages and commit to ceasefire.  How do pronouncements about who is the 'good guy' advance these urgent, practical aims?

if hamas are purely driven by islam and jihad, and want nothing more than to kill every single jewish person in israel, why are they not either a) masking their plan and waiting until they actually have the resources to accomplish significant damage, or b) suicide rushing israel to do as much widespread damage as possible? why provoke a war that is utterly one sided and would give israel license to destroy gaza?

As usual, Coleman's reasoning is crystal clear and well considered. I appreciate that he includes context that I haven't heard Sam give much attention to before.

His criticism of the IDF for example. He acknowledged that it was a mistake for the IDF to cut off humanitarian aid to Gaza in an attempt to pressure Hamas to release the hostages. He also mentions credible reports of soldiers shooting civilians seeking food.

Coleman talked about things that I didn't know before too. Like I didn't know that it was a war crime for an army not to wear uniforms while fighting. Also, using children as lookouts makes them combatants under international law.

What is fascinating now is that the Zionists have shifted. Before, saying Israel is committing war crimes was considered anti-Semitic, but now it is like “yes, we commit war crimes, but we are the good guys”.

Insisting on equivalence in the face of obvious non-equivalence is not the man's best hour.  Even if Hamas would have done worse if they could have, only one reality exists, and it deserves more respect than to conceive of it only in comparison to make-believe.

I haven’t heard this one, but last time I heard him he kept making references to how India didn’t resort to such violence when being occupied by British!

I mean are you dumb? One that’s no justification for anything. India suffered in silence doesn’t mean others should while British were pillaging and killing and starving millions in India. 

And secondly in small spells Indians did go violent. And Britain called them terrorists.
