Adding this because I went to respond to an ignorant comment and it was deleted. 

Protests in Nepal from the people, especially younger generations have been going on for years. There has been a large insurgence of young people in Nepal's politics. 

Since that has been happening the political landscape has been squeezing neck on these wanted changes and increasing censorship and government oversight. 

The do called "social media ban protest" was actually a "Gen z" protest calling on anyone 28 and younger to peacefully protest against corrupt government. This social media ban was a straw that broke the camel's back and media and the government are trying to save face and blame it on protestors.

During the protest extremist groups infiltrated and started wreaking havoc and the police and government responded back with escalated violence killing a known 20 people and injuring hundreds more. 

A good lot of these kids protesting wore their school uniforms, badges, and backpacks to show peacefulness. The youngest person killed was underage in his uniform. There are reports coming in that some people killed were just people walking through the streets. There are videos coming in with those same police beating people in the streets outside of their businesses. 

Do not blame this single event on years of pent of frustration with the government. Nepal has many historical events of protesting against corrupt governments that a lot of time ends up with hangings or death squads for resistance to leaders. This time people pushed back harder when they were young people being killed.

Nepali here. Country has a history of massive protest against corruption, world events, etc. Happened in my fathers time, which happened in my time, and now it's Gen Z organized protest as they come to age. 

20+ school kids were shot down for no reason. Even the monarch didn't do this nonsense when the whole country marched in the streets, demanding democracy in the 90s. 

Now, people are rightfully pissed. 

Also, there is a huge trend exposing the luxury lifestyle of kids of politicians. When nepo babies share pics on instagram, people itemize the cost of what these kids are wearing, where they are staying, and their dad/mom's salary lmao.

Answer: A Nepali here. There seems to be a lot of false information. No the protest's main motive was not to uplift the ban on social media. It was a protest against corruption.  It wasn't led by any political or any sort of intrest and purely by "Gen Zs". The protest was always planned to be peaceful. However it seems like some protestors or "infiltrators" went to be very violent. They tried to enter the federal parliament. The police then got extremely violent. Students in uniform carrying school bags were shot in the head. Curfew was imposed however of no use. As of now 15 are confirmed dead who are mostly very young people. And 100+ are injured. The capital's hospital is running out of supplies at this point and things aren't looking very good. We are demanding the resignation of the PM and government.

The government shut down social media sites, presumably to thwart the organization of more protests, but that didn't work. The latest protests got very violent and at least 19 people have been confirmed killed by police. 

The government is trying to characterize the protests as being by "Gen Z" and about the social media ban, but it's actually by a wide swathe of the population and about corruption. The social media component is just a reaction to the government's reaction.

Children of politicians and bureaucrats started becoming viral with their extravagant luxury lifestyle way out of their or their parents legal means (income). In response, government banned most social media. 

Also recently politicians have been shameless with their policies like politicians / parliamentarians deciding their own salaries, 5 star meals at the representative house, and open cases against politicians that are closed automatically after a limited period of time (forgot how much) 


So a massive online campaign started against corruption which after social media ban spilled onto the streets mostly by young people or "Gen Z". 


14 people have been brutally shot down by police which also included minors in school/college dresses. And 400 more injured so far. Highest one day kill in the history of Nepal during protests. Even the kings were not that brutal. 


Opinion: The protest was probably infiltrated by ruling party supporters. Because the original plan was not to bring down office of representative. But even then it was the property being attacked not people, so there was no reason to use real bullets.

**September 9:** Public outrage reached its peak following the killing of innocent students and protesters. Demonstrators stormed the parliament building in Kathmandu and set fire to it and private properties belonging to ministers were also burned. The prime minister has since resigned and fled, while some ministers were caught at their residences and assaulted by the public. Protests continue, with demonstrators burning down the private residences and business establishments of corrupt leaders.

While many citizens feel they have won a major battle, efforts are now underway to form an interim government and restore calm. There are also rumors that Maoist supporters may have deliberately escalated the violence to create conditions for martial law. As a result, groups of people are urging the general public to avoid further chaos, reminding them that the government has already collapsed and they need to preserve their public properties for future use. This protest was not led or organised by any political party or group. The dissatisfied public took to the streets because of the lack of oppurtunities and facilities in the country and the rampant corruption that prevailed in the government.

September 10: Nepal is in chaos now. Shops are being looted, many prisoners are escaping right in front of the eyes of the public, the parliament which has all the data on Nepal continues to burn. Most big buildings owned by telecom companies, hotels and spa, shopping complexes have been destroyed and looted. While some responsible citizens have been trying to stop these arsonists from destroying further properties, many people are now scared due to these violent acts. Utter utter chaos everywhere, airports are also being vandalised and even other very important offices being burned and destroyed. No sights of fire brigades or any effort of saving the buildings are seen. Police have no power, the army is doing whatever little they can. But some people have stolen police uniforms and probably weapons too, so its very unsafe for everyone. All in all, the wrong people are taking advantage of the opportunity and lawlessness and doing whatever they please.

Their politicians have salaries in peanuts, The Prime Minister of Nepal takes home a salary of 9K USD little over 750 USD a month. That is the prime minister, the family members and even cousins and friends of politicians in Nepal are seen living lives of filthy luxuries while the people die of disasters, mismanagement and poverty. There are no jobs or businesses that show this level of income in Nepal. 

They started asking on social media how these mfers can't afford watches and handbags that cost more than their annual salaries so casually. How they can flaunt international trips so shamelessly. They started picking out people, comparing their houses, watches, shoes, purses and cars to their salaries. The prime minister earns 9K USD a year, how do entire families of these people have a 1K USD phone. Did they save a whole year's salary to buy 10 iphones? 

Nepali Government was trying to get these videos removed like other governments do, US does, India does, UK does. Any video on social media sites they don't like they have it removed and banned in their country. Nepal is too little for these sites to care, so they brought in new laws that these sites have to remove any video the government tells them to or face ban. That is the ban people are vehemently against, as they should be.

That led to protests, protests turned violent, police opened gunfire. 15 dead 100 injured. Now people demanding the current government as a whole to step down and be tried for their corruption.

I don't know anything about the situation, but whenever "corruption" is used as justification for revolt it gives me a bad feeling, since in reality corruption is a broad and unsolvable problem, and so it can serve as justification for everything.

The whole "defense of free-speech by defending big-tech" angle also makes me reticent to see this in a positive light.

The ban on social media is what triggered it, but its way more than that.

The protest is an amalgamation of numerous issues - corruptions, citizens being sold as labourers elsewhere due to lack of economic opportunies at home, discontent with governances. But what triggered it, believe it or not, is the nepobabies hashtag that that had been trending in Nepal social media for the past several months. It was not simply a hashtag but a telling sign of how deeply unequal Nepal has become. 

It started off a few months ago as a meme, people obtaining and sharing pictures of government bureaucrats and politicians children holidaying in New York, Europe, Dubai in expensive attire and locations. This unfolded online discussion questioning how do these government officials whose salary is meager (remember this is Nepal) can afford to send their kids and families to multiple holidays, study abroad, obtain expensive branded item, aquire land and property. 

The oppulence of these politician wealth was flauted by their children: displaying on instagram their massive personal housing complex, receiving massive government contract to their own relatives and family members, holidaying regularly in Europe, US, Dubai, flaunting expensive items and so on. Of course, it was corruptions. 

The memes wouldn't stop and it spread from targeting the central level politicians to local levels. In response, the nepo babies (the politicians kids), stupidly, reacted to these memes by doubling down on it, saying "my dad worked for this wealth, your lazy dad needs to do better" or "i was born lucky, you are just unfortunate". Echoing the infamous "why cant they have cake instead?"  Remember this is predominantly happening on social media with gen z as a major participants. Tiny fraction of Nepo babies Gen Z talking down on the majority. The online battle had been going back and forth quite sometime. 

Now, add fuel to the fire, the national government banned all social media in the country except tiktok because tiktok has an office in Nepal and willingly censor contents that they are told to. The kids saw this as an attempt to silence them, especially when the online discussion was about how Nepalese working people's taxes were gozzled up by the ruling class to fill their own opulent desires in a country where  majority of the people are forced to migrate abroad as exploited labourers.

The banning of social media triggered the whole thing, but it is not the sole reason as most news outlet make it to be. Its the deep unsettling feeling of living in an unequal society.

always funny to me that there was never a protest/uprising against government in the core western imperialist   countries, the closet one I can recall was yellow vest in France but again that was more to the government making the retirement age older instead of actual corruption. People seem to be fine with government taking political donation from Indvidual/corporations as if they are not getting bribed? It's a coloured revolution, if they get succeeded watch them install a pro-west puppet regime. My reason are that since India is increasingly asserting its strategic autonomy, resisting western pressure as well as hinting towards inclining with the RIC bloc, it also keeps tight control on how much access western governments and activists have to dalai lama, and has been lately discouraging official Western meetings with him in Dharamshala. The US and the West needs a new foothol in Himalayas, what could be more useful than Nepal? A country which is in such a strategic geographic location that it borders both China’s tibet autonomous region to the north and India to the south east and west. It has also always been a competing ground for West, China and India precisely for its strategic location. A pro west regime in Kathmandu would not only give Washington and its allies a vantage point over India but, more importantly, over China. My analogy can be wrong, and I hope it is, but with the events unfolding I highly doubt it.
