Why would they think it's a good idea to antagonise Poland if they're struggling so much taking over the Ukraine? It doesn't seem like it would work out very well for them, and that's before you take into account attacking them would mean the rest of the EU piling on.

Poland should remember that Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet with a pilot for a few seconds of airspace violation a few years ago and it resulted in zero retaliation from Russia.  The only consequence was that Russian planes stopped operating close to the Turkish border.

It really feels like if Russia were gonna try anything serious, beyond Ukraine, in the next decade. Then they’d want to do it during Trumps term. Moreover, because Trump seems to be helping Putin to the best of his ability, wouldn’t it also make sense to act before the mid-terms before Trump potentially loses a lot of power?

So it does feel like a really dangerous time. Obviously there’s a big argument to be made for Russia waiting until they’ve rebuilt after some kind of a surrender from Ukraine, in which case we are talking much further into the future. 

But America are definitely more of an ally/soft touch to Russia now than I can ever imagine them being again. Can’t see there being a much weaker president for them to have to worry about (not worry about). 

Hopefully they’re not too crazy to try it. I can’t see how they’d be successful in fighting on two fronts unless they had help. North Korea are pretty crazy but hopefully China would keep them both inline. 

Is it possible that if China thought they could rely on America not involving themselves, just staying neutral, that China could help Russia in some invasion? Doubtful I guess? But scary times still. 

Maybe a more realistic bad scenario is Russia will just do something else that pushes the line of what the west will accept without invoking article 5, since Europe know they’re probably on their own at the moment. So they’re less likely to respond. But then that would have long lasting implications once that line of acceptable behaviour has been changed, even when Trump is gone and there’s a more sane President in power. It will be hard to go back.

NATO Article 4 officially calls for consultation over military matters when "the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened.". This can lead to action from NATO or possibly no action at all. 

IMO - I dont know either. Drones have come through Poland's (and Romania's) territory in the past during this conflict but its only been 1 or 2 drones. This was more than a dozen. Yes possibly EW could account for some of them but it could also be Russia probing Poland to see what response NATO would have to an incursion like this.

Answer: there’s not really a way to tell a complete and neutral explanation at this point (and probably never will be), but there are some facts we do know. 

Russia and Ukraine have both made extensive use of drones throughout the war since 2022. This time, some Russian drones ended up in Polish airspace (and we’re talking hundreds of kilometers over the border, it’s not like they got lost and wandered _just_ over a line somewhere). Poland shot down some of these drones, others crashed after running out of fuel.  Obviously, Russia claims that this was an accident. 

One major wrinkle is Poland is a NATO member, and Article 5 states that an attack on one NATO member is treated as an attack on all other NATO members, who have an obligation under the treaty to assist with mutual defense. There has been some concern since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that an active war so close to a NATO member could cause a scenario just like this: a border incursion into a NATO country’s territory, whether intentional or not, that causes NATO as a whole to become more involved in the conflict. (The United States and many European nations are already ‘involved’ in some capacity like sending weapons and other assistance to Ukraine, but we’re talking a NATO mobilization like the Balkans in the ‘90s or Iraq and Afghanistan in the ‘00s, where NATO member nations are actively sending troops into combat.) I believe Poland has to be the one to invoke Article 5 to request mutual assistance, but that’s unclear since the only time Article 5 has been invoked was after 9/11 and the material facts were substantially different then. 

Now, World War III probably is NOT going to break out tomorrow. There is still a potential for diplomacy to ease tensions, or Poland could decide to turn the other cheek and not try to retaliate for the threat to their sovereignty. However, the situation is definitely more precarious than any previous point in the conflict, and we can only hope that nothing else happens that could be seen as increasing the hostilities toward NATO member states.

Answer: There have been many violations of NATO airspace by Russian drones during the course of the war in Ukraine. Usually it was just one or two drones either on their way to Ukraine or ones that overshot their target and wandered off. Poland usually had to contend with drones on their way to Ukraine, whilst Romania had to deal with stray drones crashing just over the border. These incursions of NATO airspace by Russia using a few drones could also be seen as testing NATO resolve. How strong will NATO react? If they don't they can try again with a drone extra and see when enough is enough. Throughout the war a number of NATO countries, especially Poland and the Baltic states, have made some bold statements. Will the only bark? Or will they try and bite? While Poland and the Baltic states might be eager to join the fight, the Western members of NATO are not. 

The closest we came to something like this was when Poland had to deal with a Ukrainian S-400 AA missile which killed two when it struck a Polish village near the border with Ukraine. At first it was thought the missile was fired by Russia. Ukraine encouraged this thought and insisted NATO invoke Article 5 and join the fray. This became a serious dilemma for NATO politicians. When it turned out the S-400 missile was fired by Ukraine they must have sighed in relief. Ukraine for their part got very quiet suddenly and everyone could prentend it didn't happen. This is different though.

Right now Poland has invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty. Meaning the members have to meet, but nothing more. During that meeting they'll probably work out how to respond to this problem. Since these Russian drones didn't kill anyone and only caused some property damage after being shot down there is enough wiggle room to deal with the matter through some strongly worded statement. European NATO members will probably refrain from any sort of military reaction unless the US is explicitly willing to support them. Seeing as how Donald Trump feels about NATO and Ukraine he probably won't offer much support.

It was a small swarm intended to go to Poland. I'm not saying Russia wants to attack Poland or anything, but everything has a reason. They wanted to see the reaction.


Edit: nevermind, it's already declared that Russia launched 10 drones, some as far as Gdansk, by accident, and the Polish public blames Ukraine. I guess if Ukrainians just died quickly, the war would be over and Poland wouldn't be violated. True. NATO has never been stronger 💪
