Trump administration just doubled tariffs on Indian imports and is even urging the EU to consider 100% tariffs on India and China, so classic leverage before negotiations. Two way goods trade was about $129B in 2024, so both sides have incentive to deal, but this won’t be a quick BARRIERS GONE moment.  A realistic deal likely will be a narrow, sectoral package. The US wants movement on India’s high tariffs and non tariff rules, lower ICT duties that a WTO panel already found inconsistent with commitments, clearer, faster customs and standards processes and sticky issues like medical device price caps and data localization rules. India’s dairy “VEGETERIAN FEED” certification is another hard red line.  

India wants market access for its firms and crucially restoration of GSP trade preferences. But GSP has been expired since 2021 and only Congress can reauthorize it, the White House can’t restore it unilaterally, so I think any promise here will be conditional.
