Too many seem to want to go to war. That's a bad outlook. I have a feeling that there are too many who want to push for more escalation. Indian Navy making such a statement is 100% in accordance with Modi, so they are like Modi's followers now rather than for all indians. That's a recipe for escalation. How else should Pakistan respond to this when Karachi is bombarded? This is not solely about "who is morally right or wrong", this is about what the aim is with this escalation strategy. Yes, I would think so, I think Sindoor accomplished some goals but clearly it was aimed to establishing deterrence against Pakistan which it did not achieve. Considering Pakistan was using Chinese export models, presumably, the proper Chinese weapons in quality and quantity would’ve resulted in even worse outcomes for India.

Regardless, I don’t think anyone saw India as a bulwark against China, it is barely a regional power and at most is limited to Pakistan and Bangladesh in terms of near-peer conflict.

India and China have fought some unarmed clashes in the himalayas but they could never invade each other. Not only is it impractical because of the terrain but also due to the ready availability of satellite imagery that would clearly indicate a build up on either side.

Not to mention, India has nukes. The same reason Pakistan can keep poking India is the reason why India can defend against potential Chinese invasions. The no first use policy is just rhetoric -  the second China postures an invasion, Delhi will say they will burn Shanghai to the ground.

It was a limited action which probably achieved its tactical goals. It remains to be seen whether the strategic objectives were achieved and lasting deterrence established. 

I also am not sure anyone expected India to be a major military ally of the US. It is a valuable regional partner as part of the quad for a number or reasons, but there wasn’t a real expectation that India would be doing much fighting against China in the event of a major war.

Tactically I think the Indians did just fine….rafale is the one that took the big hit to its prestige because their jets got cooked by paks Chinese jets. At the end of the day, India did alright and will be critical to any future conflict with China if they end up in it.

I'm repeating this again, we will never know who won this battle. Both countries would thump their chests and keep their head high. Because, govts, militaries cannot admit lapse on their part at this crucial time. However, truth can be found out through future course of actions. 1- the Pahalgam terror attack. Why did the government leave a meadow full of tourists completely unguarded?  
This was a failure there was an int on an attack on tourist places but what the Forces and Agencies missed. The location choice was very out of syllabus type. Not something that was expected. And you have to realise, Mountains are not like cities where you can get 10 min deliveries. That is the forces fault combined. They will take the blame.

2- The armed forces have now claimed that the strikes killed 100 terrorists, including some marquee names.  
Yes, remember the ground troops are expendable. The training centre's  and senior leadership isn't. They'll be baying for heads if it was just the ground troops. But now there will be panic and fear in the recruiters, planners and trainers that they are not safe.

3- Did the government factor in Chinese weaponry before launching Operation Sindoor?  
Ofcourse. We knew the performance of their air defence because Iran had attacked them. We knew the JF17's performance and challenges. See I would say their was a time in recent years when their pilots had more experience as they did frequent bombing raids in Afghanistan and even in their own country. Now that is not the case. Losses happened on both sides. Our forces being professional accepted it.

4- What larger objective did Operation Sindoor serve? If anything, it has shown that all it takes is a few terrorists to precipitate a crisis and drag a country of a billion people into war.  
This is what no one is reporting on or emphasizing on. Ask any retired top level commander in the country and they will tell you. Pakistan always had a rhetoric. Touch me and we all die. What this attack did was showed them that we will fight. If you do any more cross border attacks on civilians, we will consider that an act of war and the cost of these antics is escalated dramatically. It was never about invading Pakistan. It was about showing Intent.

If we need to take a W from this whole fiasco, we need to amplify the questions raised here. This should never be the mode of engagement or the outcome in case of future events like these.

The main misstep from the government is the failure to provide damning evidence for the pahalgam attack. If we did that it's easy to gather international sympathy, all this would have been a lesser blow to our international image.

This was a bait from the get go and knowing the hubris that the current establishment holds they knew it would work. They were waiting for an armed response.

Underestimating the enemy has been a tale as old as time. We failed to learn from the last encounter we had with the PAF and only a fool repeats the same mistake. Humility helps one make real progress, it's time we eat some humble pie and make positive adjustments. It's the road to real strength.

This is so true. If we can attack after the incident happens. Why not take measures to prevent it. I still remember almost a month before the incident there were intelligence warnings regarding possible terror attacks. Nothing they did to stop or prevent it. Just gave warnings and waited for them to get caught automatically. I'm really surprised that if we attack them they will stop future incidents. Really? If they have to stop they would have stopped after a surgical strike. But this only aggregate who ever is remaining in the terror camp after the attacks. They will come with new plans more deadly. I am really amazed by the way the Pakistanis have put more efforts on tackling the Rafales. While in India we have been under the impression that Rafales can't be touched, they have proved it otherwise. With a collapsing economy and a military budget that is meagre compared to ours they have made efficient use of the money.

Having said that, this gives us valuable lessons about how we can utilize our budget effectively to tackle the Chinese, if the need arises.

I face palmed myself so hard when I heard the government trying to defer responsibility and making excuses that the tourist spots open only in June. I literally went there last year in May. 

Nothing they say should be taken at face value. They killed 100 terrorists? Who counted? It wasn't a ground op lol. 

We must have incurred significant losses in air combat as the French company stocks plummeted and the Chinese maker had a huge gain. The West doesn't want to see their military capabilities being weaker than the Chinese, hence the details are hidden.

The terrorists also would have to walk through an entire elevated large forested terrain and walk back out without any interception over a long period of time, the extreme slow &amp; lack of response is very concerning. 

Additionally, security gaps over such a large area when this region is extremely tightly militarized by Indian army raises another flag. 

I’m not sure why mainstream media has downplayed this hard when local impacted Kashmiris and Indians raised concerning numerous testimonies against the gov.

My guess is they used Rafael to launch SCALP and Hammer missiles and thus they would have disadvantage against PAF jets who were carrying only Air to Air missiles and dint have heavy long range A2S missiles. 
We should use Su30 as bomb truck and use Rafael as Air cover. 

The details will come out I'm a few months on what tactical lessons can be learned. We may want to integrate SCALP with Su30 if not already done or a smaller version of Brahmos for limited strikes with Su30.

We have managed to hit all their critical air bases with impunity and they have absolutely nothing to counter with. We have shown plenty of evidence of our damage and most importantly the accuracy with which we were able to pound them. They in turn have no hard evidence, citing SM posts that in turn cite them. What a stupid conclusion to arrive at. Alright. 

1. Intel failure. We dropped the ball. No other explanation, happens to the best in the world. USA with 9/11, mossad with oct 7. And terrorists never targeted tourists generally coz that hurt the livelihood of the locals. A few attacks happened on Amarnath piling rims, but tourists in general were never targeted.

2. Yes, it will deter. The message here is not to the terror organisations. It’s for Pakistan’s military. Without the backing if the state, these organisations can’t do much damage. So Pakistan will think 10 times over before approving such an attack coz they know the cost they have to pay. They clearly didn’t expect India to retaliate to this level, the sudden retraction of responsibility by TRF explains it. 

3. We’ve proven that the Chinese Air defence is junk. We hit deep inside their territory twice and they couldn’t intercept the projectiles. Even the drones managed to take out some air defences. Pakistan tried entering and attacking us, they were repelled successfully thrice. Sure a few drones got through, but the damage is Minimum. When you attack air bases in every major city and cause significant damage, it clearly proves the capability of our air force. 

Now coming to the loss of jets. Yes, we lose atleast one jet apparently. We were the attacking force, the odds are always against us. There will losses and we’ve downed Pakistani jets too. And I don’t think it should bother us that much, we achieved our objectives, got our pilots all safe and sound. A loss of a pilot is lot more damaging than that of a plane. 

4. This was answered brilliantly by Shashi Tharoor in his interview with Karan Thapar. Please watch that. India won’t be going to wars just coz a loony blows himself up. If we see the meticulous planning and the MO of Pakistan, our intelligence confirms that the attack has got something to do with Pakistan, that’s when we go to the war, just watch the interview if Shashi Tharoor, he did a much much better Job explaining this policy. 

Operation sindoor has sent a message that India will take off the gloves now. We will deep inside Pakistani territory and the HQs of terrorist organisations. ISI and Pakistan army now know the price they have to okay before funding such proxy wars in India.

First question is very valid one and we should ask it to our government. Government should be held accountable for that.

For 2nd and 4th, please be patient with me and allow me to present one interesting dilemma. It's a game theory, prisoner's dilemma. You'd know why we will never get answers to this and why no answer will ever satisfy anyone.

Imagine two countries are in eternal conflict. We have these scenarios, 1. If one of them becomes very powerful and develops disproportionately then the conflict will cease to exist. 2. If none of the two develop the strength, then both will continue to have conflicts but much less harm. 3. If both of them develop and become powerful, then the probability of conflicts going out of hand increases tremendously. Potential harm is exponential

By default any rational mind would choose to develop themselves thinking the other won't do the same and conflict will be muted. But the end result is usually the third scenario. Both will try to be powerful and will be at some point. Potential of harm is much more though one choose to be powerful just to avoid conflict! Nuclear arms race is a live example of this.

Same with the casualties. If you'd let go and not decide to act on Pehelgam incident that's the least harmful option. But would it make sense? No. You cannot let anyone attack you and be on defensive forever. If you act, you would loose lot more but you'd give a strong response or atleast try to tackle the attacks like these. 

Nothing is deterrent because both the parties involved are constantly trying to be stronger than the other. Same is with advanced weaponry. Even nuclear weapons are not deterrent anymore.

Yes these are posts we need to posting and reading. I get the equivalent of the school yard bully strategies when anyone talks about show of force. 

Honestly speaking, everyone should look at how the other side is reacting ? What emotions are we trying to evoke the opposing side and if our actions are successful in doing so. Here's my two cents on the same:
1. There have been multiple reports of tour operators functioning without requisite permissions. This is not just a Kashmir issue, this is happening throughout India. The more appropriate question would be why aren't tour operators throughout India subject to stricter laws? And why isn't the appropriate authority ensuring their execution?

2. The average number of terror attacks has seen a sharp decline post the change in doctrine seen in the response to terror attacks in J&amp;K. Before 2019, the average number of terror incidents in J&amp;K used to be in the hundreds, post 2019, there has been a considerable shift in the stance of terrorists. This can be due to the fear of unrestrained retaliation from the Indian Armed forces. (Stats can be checked via Statisa or SATP). So in short, yes, it can be said definitely the new policy has made a stark difference. And the same trend is expected to continue.

3. We as civilians have zero idea about the amount of technological advancements the Indian Army has been through. However what I do know is that the Indian Army does not even consider the Pakistan Army to be a challenge, for years their eyes have been on the Chinese cause they know that that would be the real task. There is extensive surveillance of the Chinese military equipment. That can be stated with certainty. 

4. Coming to the last question, the answer is actually multifold. The first and the most important is that what earlier was a stance, has now become a rule or a doctrine (quoting Ajay Bisaria). This is the new benchmark, the new normal. It is now abundantly clear that any militant activity will prompt a decisive military response. This essentially creates new barriers for the adversaries, since now they will be forced to also think about the results of their actions and the repurcussions attached along with it (which includes economic, strategic and reputational damages). There is now essentially a zero tolerance policy against acts of terrorism in place.
Secondly, the unspoken N-word has finally been taken out of the said out in the open. This stern resolve has obviously stirred many, including some to the East. 
Thirdly, many high value terrorists have been neutralized. 
Fourthly, there is this new air of self reliance which has never been witnessed before. Made in India drones not only performed excessively well,but was in fact better than its Turkish counterpart. Let's not even get to Aakash and Brahmos. This shows that India has immense potential in the military equipment manufacturing sector and that needs harnessing. 
Fifth, since the Indus Water Treaty is now in abeyance India has vast control over its water resources. This can now be used in a multitude of ways. Off the top of my head I see great potential in agriculture in J&amp;K which is drought prone. This is also obviously a non-military tool of strategic importance. It was also a opinion of many that the treaty favoured Pak. India also will now be pressurized to build infra to store all the excess water. Which is a win for the region. 
I'm also missing a lot of points, by my fingers are tired from the typing.

1.) The was a security failure and intelligence gap. We cannot have both at the same time. I at least expected a press release accepting fault for this. Nothing happened. No one was held responsible, at least not in front of the public.
For all the people who are going to say intelligence failure happens once in while, sure it does, but just know cost of it now. I hate mass surveillance but I think it's much needed in JK, given the situation.

2.) We striked infra that was supposed to be training and recruitment facilities. These facilities are cheap and can be rebuild within a couple of days. Striking a weapons depot, going after the money trail leading to financer of terrorist operations is very much needed.

3.) Losing a jet cost most than taking out defense systems and also very embarrassing to loss one in our own airspace. I understand we did it to warn pakistan about the consequences it would face, but it cost us more.

4.) It was more of power move and show of force from India. Because in a couple of months the camps destroyed will be rebuilt/relocated and operational, terrorist recruitment will increase because of the hatred and misinformation, pak got a loan to replenish their military infra and backing from china. All that will matter will be the civilians lives lost and financial hole it leaves on the defence budget.

At the end of day, it doesn't matter how much military infra we destroy, we will have to agree to a stalemate because of nukes.

Our main focus must be to infiltrate and decapitate pak nuclear command and their nuclear program. Like israel and US have been doing to Iran.

Also to your question "Will this act as a deterrent against future terror attacks?" , even a first world country and 9/11 victim USA hasn't been able to get rid of terrorism since their popular "war of terror" actions taken in 2002 by them in Pakistan and the world still suffers consequences. Then how can you expect India to guarantee there will be no terrorism in future. All India can do is always be prepared and ready and keep strengthening its forces and economy.

In my opinion...no. The complete failure of planning for the attack is insurmountable. Everyone is comparing the J-10 with the Rafale when the real problem is lack of battle space awareness and flying a literal 7 nation army of aircraft (good luck mechanics...). I don't think India even knows what they are going to do tomorrow.
