This is probably the single biggest reason why I'm speculative of any Aussie style buyback being implemented in America.  I just sense that 3%'s and Right wing gun owners in general would shoot up any law enforcement officer who came to their door or that they would find any way to circumvent the new regulation/law that they could.  

I'm not saying we don't need change in regards to gun violence - I just can't figure out if a buyback  / confiscation program would backfire.

Voluntary buyback programs happen on the state and local level reguarly.

But the thing is, guns are used for self defense 60,000 times a year at low estimates and millions of times at high estimates. The issue is not “will gun owners respond with violence?” but rather “how  will people who are not as physically capable defend themselves against violence?”.

It’s not really an option here. Regulating gun makers is the only realistic option that still conforms to 2a. 

If your kid takes your phone and can’t unlock it, someone who’s not the owner of the gun shouldn’t be able to “unlock” it. Keep guns in the hands of responsible owners and out of the hands of bad guys.

There's also the problem that the sheer volume of guns in America mean that we could not replicate countries like Australia, England, or Japan with any meaningful success. There's more guns than people here, and there are a lot of people.  If I could snap my fingers and make all guns disappear, I'd do it without hesitation, but barring that any gun control argument needs to start with the fact that the cat has been out of the bag for a long time.

I do still support voluntary buybacks even though they overall don't really make a dent in the gun problem, so long as the buyback means the destruction of the guns.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but enforcement and implementation is why an all out gun ban would never ever work in the US. Much like how alcohol prohibition turned the average person wanting a drink into a criminal this would turn the average American gun owner into a criminal (who is also inherently armed) eroding the concept of law and order. Additionally it would require authoritarian levels of police going door to door searching peoples homes and likely responding with lethal force when encountering someone with one (if you think police brutality and corruption is bad now…) . The US is the home of the largest amount of manufacturing, selling, and purchasing of weapons anywhere in the world (if I remember correctly the stats on private gun ownership is that our citizens own more than the rest of the citizenry of the world combined or something else utterly ridiculous). And last but not least if we somehow manage to get through that initial immensely violent upheaval we have two very large land borders one of which is with Mexico where things are similarly violent so we can’t just control imports from ports. That’s literally just a start on why it’s really just all talk to get votes and will never be policy.


Basically implementing some common sense gun control and safety training regarding keeping your guns away from your teenage kids and how not to accidentally shoot someone is about as far as we can and should reasonably go.

I am consistently worried about right wing violence because right wingers are violent, hate-filled, and heavily armed.  I am not worried at all about them attacking the government, because the government would obliterate them.  I am much more worried about the many murders they commit every year, especially against people of color and lgbt folks because unfortunately, the government doesn't care about them.  Frankly I would much prefer that right wing anger were focused on the government, because the government is the hardest target and can respond with exponentially more force if needed.

I've had such hit and miss buying guns it's crazy. Some stores I practically had to beg to give them money. Other places seemed to really like having you there.

Actually had a great experience at Cabela's recently of all places. Didn't buy but likely going back this weekend to do so. There's also a small independent pawn shop near me that also happens to sell new (and used) firearms. Super friendly and happy to talk, but unfortunately usually has a very limited selection.

What I want is the Apple Store of gun stores. People who like talking about them and showing people about them, willing to help, educate and sell at the same time, and willing to set you up regardless of your knowledge/experience level. I'm sure they exist, but not near me.

The shop becomes both a boys club and an echo chamber. You don't apply to work, you hang out until you're hired.

Inside jokes, pranks, 1-upmanship, and political radicalization escalate until they drive away enough customers they're forced to close.

Years ago, in my hometown, there was an antique shop that specializes in medical antiques. The owner was an ass- glowered at everyone, posted sporadic hours, refused to answer questions, etc.

After he died and his wife started selling shit at normal hours like a regular person, she told me that the shop was just his personal collection that had gotten too big to keep anywhere else. She told him "get rid of it or divorce", so he opened the shop and just told her nothing was selling. 

Sometimes I think gun shops are basically the same thing. 😂

The gatekeepers of the gun store are a real thing. IME it’s like the tattoo shop and record store jerks. Somehow, they are superior to you, and they need to make you feel it. 

OTOH, there is a nice guy a few miles from my house who is an FFL, so I shop online and work through him.

If it's an option for where you live, find a local FFL with cheap transfer fees and buy online whenever possible.  I don't remember the last time I asked for an opinion on anything at a lgs.

I stick to the large sporting goods stores (Academy, Bass Pro, etc), and if they don’t stock what I want, I buy online and have them do the transfer.

I don’t even care if the local shop is cheaper, the obnoxious MAGA flags, rude employees, and so on at the local shops is a massive turn off that I just don’t have the patience or inclination to deal with.

I’ve never worked at a gun shop, but generally customer service roles suck. So even though I sometimes get annoyed by the attitudes at the various LGSs that I buy from, I try to remember that they are probably just having a bad day.

I can’t count how many times I see people flagging the store, or walking around and asking for help from attendants without having done any independent research on what they might want to buy.

And, keep in mind that the majority of clients are right-wing; they’re not known for being the nicest and most patient people.

I've been lucky and also heard some customer service horror stories.  The shops with ranges typically do events, competitions, it becomes kind of a club.  You're an outsider when you walk in for the first time.  I don't purchase from LGSs with ranges for that very reason.  The places I buy know me and are cool with getting me in and out quickly and answering any questions.

Because, largely,  they're staffed by dudes that are super-cool and tactical. All of them special operators, Rambos, and John Wicks, who are doing us a favor by allowing us to exist and share in their air, skills, knowledge, and coolness. 

That's why I usually start my conversations with them with something like: "Listen here, chubby,  I'm looking for ammo... keep the bullshit attitude under your MAGA hat, pudge." It usually goes well.

Very odd. In my experience, gun store staff are usually "gun guys"; this isn't Wal-Mart or Target, the staff at a gun store like what they sell, and they like talking shop.

I would give them the benefit of the doubt that it was late, or early, or their girlfriend/boyfriend didn't give them any on the way out or whatever. The first time. The second time I get a "why are you bothering me" attitude from a store's staff when I'm trying to spend money, it ain't a fluke, and I make a point of it.

A lot of gun store employees just don't know that much about guns. I had someone try to sell me an 18 inch barrel shotgun with iron sights when I was buying my first gun, for the purpose of bird hunting.

Find a better gun store, I drive past 3 to get to my fav, always friendly, they try to save me money by price matching or sometimes getting me better deals I didn’t know about. Iv walked in and talked to a few about some ideas Iv had and gotten fantastic feedback. It sucks your LGS acts like that but when you find a great one it’s fantastic

I'm a small blue speck in rural red Indiana. I grey woman as much as possible, though. Imagine my surprise when I went to my local shop (with the guy known as an asshole), and I was asking about having my firing pin replaced. He went out of his way to get the armorer for the local sheriff's department to replace it for me. I went in a week later to buy a new glock. Then I took my son in law in there. He's not overly friendly, but he's never once been an asshole about my choices. It's a large shop in a small town and he's the owner. He surprises me every time I'm in there.

I used to work at Dick's back when they sold guns. It was my first proper job, over the summer before I started college, I think.


The assistant manager would recommend .22 LR to customers for self defense, didn't matter who they were or their background. She didn't trust any customers were competent enough to handle anything more powerful.


It pissed me off. I wasn't perfect by any means, I didn't know everything, but at least I was genuinely trying to give tailored advice to customers based on their individual interest and experience.


I think a lot of people have weird biases/stereotypes/assumptions regarding firearms and firearms owners, and that includes owners themselves judging one another, and that extends to gun store salespeople.

I checked out a gun store in my hometown yesterday that I had been driving by for years.  It was well lit, quiet, laid out well.  No Punisher decals, no FJB or Hillary Lied bumper stickers.  No 2A posters on the wall or targets that were obviously POC on display.  The owner was polite, professional, and knowledgeable and offered the service I wanted at a reasonable price. I was in and out in under 30 minutes.  And 15 of those minutes were me wandering around.  It felt super-weird.  I don't think I'll trade anywhere BUT this place in the future.

I can’t say I’ve had this experience though I’ve only been to 2 gun shops and 1 FFL that only does transfers (private party and online orders only basically).

They’ve all been super helpful and friendly. Maybe it has to do with where I live or what shops I go to idk
