I can only speak to Australia, but my reading on it is that it's pretty toothless and guided by domestic politics more than anything. 

There's been pro-Hamas activists camped outside the center-left prime ministers electoral office since October '23 and media coverage/public opinion overwhelmingly favors the Palestinian narrative, to the extent that ordinary people do not have any meaningful grasp on the Israeli perspective. This country has zero meaningful influence on Israel/Palestine politically or economically, maybe excluding the 100,000 Jewish voters and 500,000 Arab voters here. Despite this, there are large weekly pro Palestine protests and the far-left has unanimously adopted the issue and routinely accuses the mild labor government of being "genocide enablers". One of the favored disruption techniques is for agitators to inflate the importance of absurdly insignificant trade arrangements, such as Australian participation in the US joint strike fighter program which has supposedly seen a couple of locally manufactured pieces of titanium heat shielding make their way to the Israeli air force via the US. This sentiment has trickled into the trade union movement which heavily influences labor politics and thus foreign policy by proxy. The whole is r*tarded to be perfectly honest.

It's unlikely our government will step too far out of line with the US right now given the looming situation in the South China Sea, but bureaucrats gonna bureaucrat. 

It's worth noting that the recognition proposal is conditional upon Hamas being excluded, but it's easy to imagine it will be seen as a victory and used as evidence that Hamas was somehow righteous in what it did on the basis of it attracting global sympathy and weakening Israel's position. Given the timing, I fail to understand how it will do anything but fuel perpetuation of the conflict, clearly very short sighted and virtue-signally.

I think you are reading too much into the announcement. The  virtual signaling was primarily meant for local consumption (see, we are doing something) and to send a signal to the Netanyahu government (we are very upset about what's going on and some of our voters are also very upset and concerned about what's happening in Gaza).

I can tell you even the Pro-Palestinian supporters in those countries arent particularly thrilled about the announcement, the protests will not stop, the Sumud floatilla is not going to turn around, reason being NOTHING CHANGES on the ground, the war continues, etc... most ordinary Pro-Palestinian supporters are pushing for sanctions (BDS movement), not specifically recognition of the State of Palestine. And of course they are also pushing for REAL tangible change, immediate effects like Ceasefire now, allow unrestricted humanitarian aid etc...

Nothing much has changed.  Most of those countries were insistent, at least formally with respect to the UN that Palestine exists and Israel is occupying Palestinian territory which consists of all territory conquered in 1967.  They believed that Palestine was a state being occupied before the declaration, they believe it after.  The believed the PA was the legitimate government of Palestine before, they believe the PA is the legitimate government of Palestine after.  They engaged in diplomacy (though not what formally counts as international diplomacy under International Law) before and likely won't actually upgrade status after.

I think this is mostly being done to appease domestic constituancies that want some sort of strong action.  These countries don't want to actually take strong action so instead go for something symbolic that will sell.  Israelis should be happy that this is a sign the countries doing the recognizing are very reluctant to actually change policy with respect to Israel at this point.

Western nations “recognizing” Palestine now, will cement their currently held borders.

Israel was previously willing to trade land and other concessions in exchange for Palestine’s assurance of peace, and an end to Palestinian demands to be allowed to live within Israel’s borders.

If Palestine is forced to recognize its own statehood, then Palestinians can no longer claim to be permanent refugees. Most importantly, as citizens of their own country, they would have no standing to demand residency in Israel.

As a sovereign nation, they also lose their excuse for attacking Israel. A sovereign nation that bombs a neighboring country can not claim to be “resistance fighters”.  Continued attacks on Israel would no longer be as easy for other countries to condone and ignore.

The countries making headlines these days calling for the recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state are barking up the wrong tree. Their public declarations are purely performative, though imo, and the possibility of a future, independent Palestinian state, repeatedly and gratuitously rejected by the Palestinian leadership over the years, disappeared from the realm of possibility 2 years ago with the attack that launched the current war.

Aliza Pilichowski wrote an opinion piece for the Jerusalem Post yesterday that articulates the likelihood that Israel will eventually annex Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), probably Area C, where Israel has had complete legal jurisdiction and security control since the Oslo Accords in the 1990s and Israeli citizens outnumber Palestinian citizens two to one. Those 250k Palestinians living in Area C would be offered Israeli citizenship like the Jordanians of East Jerusalem years ago.

Also the responsible power, Israel, is specifically trying to not allow Palestine to develop and become a state. When Palestine achieves freedom, it will not be closed off to the entirety of the West but be open to it and be able to develop with the significant aid and restitutions from Israel that it can expect.

At the moment the key concern is putting pressure on Israel to end it's generations long illegal occupation. Recognition of Palestine is one tool that is being used to do that, hence it is useful for the purpose it is intended.

I actually think it’s dangerous. When Israel became a state, they were backed with their allies military equipment, such as aircraft. Now that “Palestine” is recognized, it could inspire countries to arm them and steer them towards war. I think it's important for countries to recognize Palestine also recognize that

1. the citizens of Palestine are exactly that, citizens of a state. Thus they cannot be described as "stateless"
2. because they are not stateless, they cannot be described as refugees. More particularly, because they reside in Palestine, they especially cannot be described as refugees from Palestine.
3. they possess no right to settle outside of the state of Palestine (for example in Israel) without the permission of the sovereign government there.

Gaza was an independent Palestinian state since 2005. They even have a border with Egypt which Israel have zero control over. They shot rockets at Israel so Israel put a partial blockade, a 100% legal and common sense measure between warring states, it doesn't make it less of a state.

This is all moral grandstanding. I've not heard Palestinians calling for a state, they want someone else's state. Even if the whole world recognizes them as a state they themselves won't.

Contrary to what this article claims, recognition does not reward Fatah, it rewards Hamas. Because Hamas was the one which the deeds which led to recognition. Without the 7 October, the international community would not support Palestine so much. It would have been one thing if that recognition had happened ten years from now long after the end of the war, but here the recognition happened in the middle of the war clearly as a punishment against the way Israel is conducting the war. I don't think I've read an article from Palestinian point of view that acknowledges past mistakes so openly.

As to the wave of statements about pending recognition of Palestine - this is the stick.

The carrot would soon be clear too - Hamas and all other armed non-state groups to be disarmed and KSA to recognize Israel, others to join sooner or later.

This will, over some time, stabilize the region which is what the rich Arab regimes want, the poor regimes want the money, and Trump wants a noble like Obama got.

Will we see peace in the middle east in our time?

It's actually closer than it's ever been, but maybe for this particular conflict, that's not saying much.

Recognizing Palestine does not mean recognizing Hamas. And I think if this was made more clear it would help the process of recognizing Palestine, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Hamas needs to give up power for statehood, no sane country would allow a hostile government launching rockets into civilian areas on their borders.

PLO/Fatah/Hamas have ALWAYS rejected the notion of a Palestinian state as long as Israel stands, instead wanting the whole land of the State of Israel. They have never agreed to a two-state solution, and neither have they agreed to a split-state solution where the Gaza strip and the West Bank would form a so-called state.  
Any recognition of a Palestinian state does not apply to the Palestinian narrative.

Nobody is doing them any favors.

Hamas have rekindled the age old dream of the Palestinians, to completely defeat and drive the Jews out of historic Palestine "from the River to the Sea"


It is not a struggle for independence, but a struggle for complete victory - a Palestinian victory. Hamas believes it can be done, and the wall to wall support it has gathered around the world will fuel this belief for a hundred years to come.

I'll start with some notes on subtle usage of language.


Notably, the author is back to using "PLO" as the name for this body. PA is a "subsidiary."


Irl..  the PA has been the PNA, Palestinian National Authority for many years. Nations that recognize Palestinian Statehood refer to it as the "Palestinian Government." 


PLO -&gt; PA -&gt; PNA -&gt; Government.  


If/when this author wanted to emphasize Palestinian sovereign rights... he'd use the term "government." Since he wants to de-emphasize Palestinian responsibility here... he goes all the way back to the 80s and frames them as PLO. 


This sort of "game" a big reason why the current state of affairs is what it is. For a peace agreement to mean anything, the parties agreeing need to be responsible. If the Paletinian Government cannot be responsible for the actions of other political parties (or factions within their own party)... then they can't negotiate either. 


The current international efforts are about recognizing a Palestinian state to punish Israel. They are not about promoting the existence of a Palestinian state. They gladly trade state capacity, institution building or any real state-building for rhetorical constructs.

Western countries that previously opposed the recognition of Palestine did so out of the PLO's socialist sympathies, or out of a deference to Israel rooted in World War II. We are now moving into a new world order, with new considerations.

I understand the hesitance to recognize Palestine. But I don't believe there is such a thing as a terrorist state, even though there are states that commit acts of terrorism. It's not like people are now denying the existence of Afghanistan all of a sudden.

The Palestinians are the only self-governing people in the world that are not a full member of the UN. (There are no native-born Vaticani.) They should be afforded this much. Too bad about their shitty government.
