The United States and the rest of the "West" accept that countries like India will buy oil from countries that they've sanctioned.

This is because oil is a global market, and supply inelastic. Look at Covid for example [global oil consumption dropped just 9% but oil prices plummeted, but I digress](https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=46596).

Countries like India are able to get pretty substantial discounts from heavily sanctioned nations because they can say "why would we pay the same price for you when my largest trade partners don't want us working together". It's the same reason that on an individual level, you pay less for something that you know was stolen. The risk/potential backlash for the buyer means the item is worth less.

So India gets cheaper oil, the west doesn't have a demand shock due to major suppliers no longer supplying, and sanctioned nations still get hit because they are selling at a fraction of what they otherwise would sell at.

I mean everything was still acceptable if we were investing this profit (part of it gained by government) to build capacity in terms of manufacturing, skilling and building capital. But instead governement chose an easy way out of it by giving freebies like ladli behen etc etc.

Stating facts but comming to wrong conclusion. If india didn't buy Russian oil then global prices of oil will skyrocket. This can have damaging effects on our forex reserves. Higher tax on oil is one of the ways govt balances union budget. Without it fiscal deficit will rise. And since oil is important for logistics, it's increase in price will lead to broad inflation across sectors. To say Ambani's have benefited is correct but to say that consumers are not benefiting from a stable economy and steady inflation is a very disingenuous argument.

Indian govt got money due to cheaper russian oil means they build infra for us, even if they dont give cheaper fuel for us. That is indirect benefit for us, so we didnt get played at all.
