I understand that he’s deploying them to fight crime. I have a hard time understanding how they can fight crime while patrolling the streets. It's a very expensive publicity stunt. The National Guard are not trained to arrest or make criminal cases even if they do witness crime. Any arrests would actually let criminals OUT of jail. 

No one really feels safer. It's kind of embarrassing. I wish this kind of crap would stop.

There's a reason the US military doesn't patrol your local downtown. It's unconstitutional and illegal per  The Posse Comitatus Act and 200+ years of US tradition.

I had them in my city (DC) for a month. I honestly don’t see much of the point, but just subjectively you do feel safer. Like you’re not worried about a homeless person or a drug addict if you’re walking through the park if there’s a couple of soldiers there. It’s generally a lot more comfortable when you have all this security, and most NG are just pretty chill people. 

It is probably mostly security theater though, like I don’t know how much of an actual difference it makes. They also have jobs they’re being distracted from, it’s not an efficient use of government but I have no other issue with it.

I live near DC and people are surprisingly happy/content with it by and large. One story that I like passing around is from a woman who found it faster to walk down to the police station to be rejected for help than to reach 911 after waking up to a homeless man jerking off outside her window.

Most of the people who aren't happy would be pro- cancer if Trump cured cancer. One example of this is someone was complaining because a soldiered waved at them and said good morning. That was making them feel oppressed.

This cost is negligable compared to the cost of all industry fleeing your city because of crime. Oakland is a prime example of this. Crime is so bad in Oakland when family owned and cooperate owned businesses cant operate anymore.

Federal officers work out of federal buildings in states. 

If antifa or some other flavor of leftist arsonists start fire bombing the building, you'd expect state/county/city police to go arrest the arsonist. 

I'm some states, the local government not only doesn't care, but encourages violence against federal workers and buildings. So the local police are useless. 

So we send in the national guard to guard federal agents and buildings. 

We wouldn't have to pay for federal resources to protect federal assets if local government would enforce laws, or if leftists would stop trying to set federal assets on fire.

So we have to remember that the National Guard isnt being deployed to patrol streets. They are being deployed to protect federal buildings and federal officers conducting lawful activities. Given the myriad protests that we have seen over the past couple of weeks where protesters will try and disrupt operations, block entrances to facilities, prevent vehicles from entering and leaving the facility, etc, I think it makes sense to do it.

I guarantee you plenty aren't happy. NG is locals--they don't want to be called away from their 9-5s for this because they're going to be expected to be assholes to their own neighbors. 

Also there was a lot of paperwork and pay issues when the Guard got sent to LA. It would not shock me if we get a repeat of that. Any commander worth his salt isn't going to send his people in again for the President if there's pay fuck ups. 

I'll tell you who you really need to start worrying about--

There's a lot of policy about exactly what the military can and cannot do on US soil against US citizens. And yeah, we might start to see those lines crossed, but I think it'll still be a bit yet. And I dunno that there's enough blind devotion at the middle-management level, and you'll probably see at least a few proud officers who remember their oath is to the Constitution and not one man. The vast majority of officers have at least their bachelor's and plenty of them did it at public universities, and plenty of them still retain critical thinking skills and are already concerned about the state of things. I've seen rumors Pritzker put the IL guard on standby due to the number of Texas House Reps who are holding up Quorum. These conversations at the Guard level *are* happening and they're not as blindly devoted to Trump as you might fear--

The point is, it'll be a while still before we risk seeing actual mass martial law orchestrated through the military.

You know who doesn't have those rules? Federal agencies. FBI, ATF, but most importantly now is ICE, since they've got a 400% budget increase. If we start to see real militarized violence against citizens, it's going to be Federal agencies leading the charge.

Enlisted Oath of Enlistment (10 U.S.C. § 502)

“I, [full name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, *according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.* So help me God.”

Officer Oath of Office (5 U.S.C. § 3331)

“I, [full name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”


The final phrase “So help me God” may be omitted for those who choose to affirm rather than swear.

But the most important points here are, you support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, and that you will obey *lawful* orders under UCMJ.

The loyalty you are swearing/affirming this oath under is to the Constitution, NOT to any person.

Whether directly outlined in the UCMJ, or more loosely-tied to codes of conduct, expressing contempt of anyone in your chain of command is forbidden. Partisan political activity is forbidden. Speaking a political opinion publicly while in uniform is prohibited.

Although on paper it seems like if you express clearly that your words are yours and do not represent the position of the armed forces that you can speak freely, the truth is that any post that might raise an eyebrow is generally frowned upon.

Political action, and opinions, are vitally important for our country's health, but those who enlist in the military generally put aside a lot of things they want, and a lot of things they feel they need to do, to fill the roll required of their current orders. At least while they are on contract.

I served '16-20', and I thought Trump was a downright traitor and scumbag. I shared that view with family and friends, but I'd never post it on reddit at the time.

Okay since I haven’t seen any actual Guardsmen make a comment I’ll take the bullet and make one myself. I’ve been in the Guard almost 6 years, I’m coming up on my ETS soon so I’ll be out soon thankfully. Personally I’m against this 100%. I cannot think of a time while I’ve been in where the Guard has been used like this. Maybe in 2020 during the election, but it wasn’t nearly this bad. It worries me about my state. In my experience most Guardsmen I meet are right leaning compared to me and a few left leaning buddies, those on the right will find excuses to justify it. A lot of Guardsmen experience is just training and so many of them are itching to actually do something “meaningful”. Some justified the California activation because they only saw the violence and none of the actual peaceful protest. Something that a lot of people have to realize is that most Guardsmen are just average people, not all of them live and breathe the military. The one hope I have is that Guardsmen see how they are perceived in moments like this. Most never really see how the public reacts to their activations or mobilizations, but with stuff like this they are going to see pressure for the first time. I always see people make comments about “why don’t they just refuse to go”. We are taught pretty early on that we really don’t have a choice when it comes to being activated. To most people it’s just a part time job. They don’t understand the amount of responsibilities they hold or how they are really viewed. To a few it’s just an excused to get paid or get away from their day job. I expect that they aren’t going to have anything to do. There’s not much the average guardsman can do. I just hope there are people who exercise their right to protest and show my fellow guardsman what this all really means. Don’t be violent towards them. Don’t call them fascist, just tell them how they are perceived by the people. Of course there are people who will support this activation, but do not let them be the loudest. That’s all I really have to say on the matter. I hope I don’t dox myself, I just wanted to put something out there. I support the constitution and the people, not who sits in the Oval Office.

I work with a guy who is out for 3 weeks for training. He left last Wednesday and was pretty sure he was going to assist ICE in some way. When someone joked about wanting to swap places with him to get out of work he said “You wouldn’t want to go if you knew what is happening.” He didn’t seem proud or excited but more like obligated.
