Well for starters, Hamas has still returned only 4 of the dead Israeli hostages which is a clear violation of the agreement. So, by doing a simple google search I got this answer, “On 18 March 2025, Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Gaza, breaking the ceasefire with Hamas. a) Phase 1 will be implemented;


b) They will conduct negotiations on Phase 2 until the end of Phase 1. 


The negotiations on Phase 2 failed and the war was resumed. If you agree to negotiate about something with someone, it does not mean that you are obliged to reach an agreement or keep negotiating forever.

Oddly enough, there are rules to war. The side that starts the war, and then finds itself losing considerably, doesn't get to call any shots. Hamas thought otherwise. Hamas was wrong. The major thing is both sides now seem to be on the same page. That's a blessing.  Sadly, now Hamas will be at our doorstep (in the USA) via Qatar/Idaho. 

Qatar was the major financier of Al-Qaeda during 9/11 2001. Now, Hamas not only will be on our soil, but they also get free flight lessons. The last ceasefire was in two phases. The first phase completed without negotiations for Phase 2. Thus, ending the ceasefire.


Phase 1 ended, no negotiations,  Hamas said it would not step down, so the ceasefire ENDED and Israel resumed bombing. Hamas just wanted to move to Phase 2 because that involved Israel fully pulling out of Gaza. Also, it extended the ceasefire without returning any more hostages.


tl;dr - Israel didn't break the last ceasefire; the ceasefire expired.

Because it is Israel, a country infamous for reneging on its deals, especially against the Palestinians. Look at the Lebanon "ceasefire" agreement, the Oslo agreement for example. Ultimately, it comes down to leverage and the Palestinians have zero leverage if Israel violates its agreements against them. Only one who can force Israel to abide by its agreements is the US and the US always sides with Israel.

Yes Israel wanted to postpone phase two and didn’t get their way so they bombed (again mostly civilians) overnight. It was clear to many at that time that Netanyahu would sabotage the deal. It’s mostly presumption as to why they didn’t accept and changed the deal but here’s a few thoughts. 
Trump just came into power and had promised a ceasefire and got it, so that was good for his publicity even if it was short lived. Israel can resume the killing and blame Hamas for not accepting the new conditions and still look like the good guy. 
Also with Trump in office it was clear that Israel wouldn’t get much pushback from the U.S, which historically is often the only thing that slows them down. So with full political cover they could continue the bombings and change the deal I.e. adding the full disarmament of HAMAS as a core demand. Here in the states public opinion of Israel is at an all time low, even within the right wing which is generally fully supportive of Israel. 
So in short, lack of U.S. pressure at the time and now there’s likely immense pressure from the U.S. because of public opinion and upcoming elections.

The 1st phase of ceasefire had a timer on it , which was supposed to be extended by negotiating the 2nd phase.


Hamas wouldn't disarm, which was israel's condition for a full withdrawal, which was hamas' condition for phase 2.


The impasse prevented a phase 2 agreement, and hamas refused to extend phase 1, so time ran out on the 1st phase and fighting resumed.

Hamas broke the cease fire when they refused to provide a list of hostages to be released in the next wave. That caused talks to stall and Israel to resume the war.

Gotta see the devil in the details but it is an important step, it's a step that Trump does deserve credit for because he's brutish, and that brutishness is self-interested and usually not for good, but it also causes fear. People are scared of him, so they come to the table.

Yet, the world is suggesting that when the Palestinians through their Government Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis, that the resulting predictable war that has killed just around 60,000 Palestinians is a genocide?  

Based on all the negotiations, it seems pretty clear that the world deems 1 Israeli life is equal to 100 Palestinian lives . . . 

So based on this seemingly common belief of the ratio - the number of Palestinians/Hamas that have been killed in this war is only halfway to being equitable!

I’m not going to get bent about this. Because I can see now that Team Israel getting bent out of shape about this is exactly the intended effect of this gesture. And no way do I want to give those knicker stains what they want.

I’m reminded of the first scenes of fictional serial killer Hannibal Lector in the films *Silence of the Lambs* and *Red Dragon*. Lector is a sociopathic genius, and he spends most of those two opening scenes playing headgames with Jodi Foster and Edward Norton’s characters who’ve come to interview him. He carries himself with the same cold erudite dignity with which he carried himself as a wealthy educated free physician. Despite the fact that he’s in a full body restraint under highest security, shows and admits no weakness, and is clearly not at all changed, cowed, or humbled by his incarceration.

Like Hannibal Lector, Hamas is cornered and caught. The only way they’ve got left to exert power over anyone, is through headgames. Purposely keeping people guessing. Purposely frustrating people and dragging their feet. Purposely getting people’s hopes up and then blithely dashing them. Purposely making statements to the press that are ambiguous and cryptic. Purposely *not* telling people what they want to hear, and purposely telling people what they don’t want to hear.

They’re *all in*. To the bitter end. And they regret absolutely nothing.

I’ve met a number of people who’ve seen or read author Thomas Harris’s whole *Hannibal* series, and can’t help but grudgingly *respect and be fascinated by* Hannibal Lector, despite the fact that he’s an unquestionably evil character. I think Hamas as a similar allure to many.

They're releasing the hostages, and have agreed to hand over governing power to a group of Palestinian technocrats. That's what was agreed to in Phase 1. They never agreed to the full plan. They never agreed to disarm, and Trump says that will need to be addressed in Phase 2.

So what will happen if they won't agree to that? That is addressed in point 17 of Trump's 20-point proposal:

&gt; 17. In the event Hamas delays or rejects this proposal, the above, including the scaled-up aid operation, will proceed in the terror-free areas handed over from the IDF to the ISF.

This basically results in a partition of Gaza, where the remaining terror-controlled area will not receive any of the promised aid.
