The oil goes to Europe after refining. That's why sanction made an exception to russian oil as long it comes indirectly,uch as through india. 

Keeping that in mind, it does not matter if india keeps importing russian oil. 

How will a large country like India thst pretty much imports all its oil requirements,get oil from elsewhere without oil pricing going up ?

Indian PM Modi's got a big headache - How to square things with Trump and get America off India's back.

America's back at the table for trade deal negotiations. India's willing to compromise on red lines like on GMOs and dairy imports and willing to pony up cash to buy American aircraft, weapons and oil.

But that isn't the problem. The problem is the guy in the White House. Trump's the one holding up the trade deal and officials on both sides say nothing's gonna change until Trump's personal grudge against Modi gets patched up.

What's the problem? Trump wanted Modi to kiss his ass. First he asked for a Nobel peace prize nomination, then for India to announce that it'd stop buying Russian oil. Both times Modi said no.

Modi probably wouldn't mind stopping Russian oil imports. He'd probably have done it if Trump had asked nicely. But Trump doesn't really give a shit about that - He wants to humiliate Modi, show India giving up and kneeling before him. He wants to show his MAGA fanboys a PUBLIC win, Modi's only ready to give him a PRIVATE one. That's the stalemate.

So what's the way out? The ball's in Trump's court. Maybe the new ambassador to India(who's one of his main lackeys) could convince him to just sign the deal. Maybe India could offer another sweetener, like a new defence deal with Boeing(who Trump's tight with).

Either way, the pro-US argument in the Indian diplomatic world are holding their noses and keeping their heads down because they've been eating crow with Trump destroying a lot of what they were hyping about the India-US relationship. That's gonna have long-term consequences.

Unless US offers tangible things, like a defence alliance, material and goods trading, secured economical future for both countries (which the POTUS could have done since the current Indian PM is the most pro-US PM they had in a while but didn’t), they’ll still get Russian oil

India is allowed to pay for the oil using the Indian  Rupee at a 30% discount to world prices. In turn Russia uses those Rupees to buy Indian goods.  If India bought oil from elsewhere it would need to pay in either Dollars or Euros.

India buying Russian oil stabilised global oil prices when OPEC refused to increase production in 2022. 

India would have stopped buying if the US (or anyone else) offered cheaper oil. But to order a sovereign nation where they can and cannot buy anything from is unacceptable. India is not and will never be a vassal state.

India saw how our closest allies are being punished for being allies.  It just means the US is losing influence over the world, China will fill the void, and there will be high chance that we will start WW3 or pressure someone else to start it for us.  US influence was huge because of USD power backed by military power.  Once financial power is not strong enough or lost, the other option is pretty obvious.  Trump might not start the WW3, but he sure is creating the perfect environment for it.

It’s not because India was importing Russian oil, it’s because India was exporting or re-exporting refined products from Russian oil which competes directly with US.

It’s one thing that if you are buying cheap oil like china does, it’s another thing that you are making huge profits from undercutting US exports

It all depends on US. If it allows oil from primarily Iran then  india may reduce russian imports somewhat but i don't think Iran has enough capacity to fulfill Russia's supply. Russian oil is here to stay. Venezuela barely has any capacity to produce oil right now. 

So even if india gets an exemption don't expect it to halt russian imports

Look there are only two oil markets now. American and Russian. With all the investments America has made with wars in the Middle East and what not, the entire Saudi-UAE-Iraqi-American oil is all the same nexus and India bypassing Exxon-Chevron &amp; petro-dollar cabal to buy oil from Russia is what US hates, not Russian oil. 

Venezuela and Iran are out of the picture because America made sure of it. 

So, unless you have large number of dinosaurs buried in Europe, India or China, the oil you can currently dig up is in Russia. And the part of largest refineries are in India which produce oil at a cheaper price compared to the American ones. There are literally only very few major options here in the export market here, US-India-Netherlands-SK and a few more, but the US is almost twice as Netherlands and India producing one third of the US. So, you will inevitably end up with Indian oil at least to some percent.

That headline is technically correct but also misleading. According to that article, the US is the 4th largest importer of Indian oil products accounting for 6% of Indian oil product exports. Also according to the article, France and the Netherlands together are also 6% of Indian oil product exports.
