Thats the problem, a US degree never did guarantee employment (in the US), despite it being so often sold as such.

If you are purely after a good education as the priority i strongly encourage study abroad. But people need to stop peddling the rumour that education in X country is gonna get you a job in X country then permanent residency. These countries take international students for one purpose: money. International students are fantastic cash cows for unis because the fees they charge are obscene.

Don't get me wrong some people will study and excel and certainly have a route to PR. Far more won't. What people should be aware of though is that these countries are intentionally making it harder and harder and harder for you to have that route to PR. The US is implement these new H1B rules which will force most home. Canada has massively slashed student visas to India. The UK and Australia have tightened screening, but actually been much smarter with it. They keep the students coming for their cash cows but have reduced the duration of the postgraduate visas. Based on how PR works in these countries this will mean most won't actually physically be able to meet the requirements for a skilled independent visa unless they can get sponsorship. 

There's a lot of talk always about which countries are best for PR, but honestly the take home point is that because the global economy is doing poor everywhere, everywhere is also going to start closing doors and prioritising themselves.

I went to a highly reputed school for my masters in the US in 2017. It wasn’t a great experience. Felt rushed, along with the added distraction of visa protectionism. Let’s be honest…most masters aspirants come to the US to only gain access to the job market. There’s no other reason for this.

OPT program allows foreign students to be employed for 3 years without having to apply for H1B after their post grad is completed. I'm not talking about religious nonsense of this country. The sheer corruption is just mind boggling. I loved this country, I had thought to start a company here which would have provided employment to at least 20 people. But the long list of paper work and cuts at every  level so long that we would have been in massive debt even before starting. 

Getting a GST number costed us 1.25 lac in just bribe money, we thought that would be the last but then came the compliance wave, every office demanded between 50k to 2 lac in bribe. We started giving some after negotiations but quickly realised we won't survive long if this continues.

Some Indians are celebrating Trump’s $100,000 H-1B fee hike, thinking it will “end Brain Drain.” That’s pure delusion.

Those who want to leave WILL leave, if not to the U.S., then to Canada, UK, Australia, Europe, Singapore and beyond. Talent goes where it is valued. One country shutting the door doesn’t stop migration.

The ugly truth is this: Brain drain is fueled by India’s own failures, lack of world-class opportunities, corruption at every level and the suffocating curse of Caste Reservations that kill merit and demotivate the best minds. Unless these are fixed, brain drain will NEVER stop.

So instead of dancing over Trump’s decision, ask why India’s brightest feel compelled to run away in the first place. That answer lies in our own system, not in U.S. visa rules. Blame our Babus for corruption and politicians who use Caste Reservations for vote banks instead of creating a system where talent thrives.

Things have improved in the last decade or so, nobody can deny that; but still we are a third world nation infested with corrupt babudom, netachracy and  judiciary.

Most of those Indians left when it was hopeless in India, they got to live the American dream, why would they leave all that to come here and face that corruption. America gave them opportunities and they utilised those opportunities. You can't blame them, blame your governments.

On top of the other reasons mentioned. You're underestimating the gap between the domestic market of USA and China vs India. It'll be easier to find those first 5 customers in the USA and China vs India because it's a much larger pool of companies (if it's a B2B business) or customers who have the ability to purchase the product.

The share of the Indian market of software/technology companies which started in India, from Infosys to Zoho is small. When you compare it with a similar company in China, there they have enough local demand to make it easier to set up, get the local talent you need and get your first few customers quickly.

Don’t be under the misconception that everyone in the U.S. on an H1B visa is among the smartest. Big Tech companies in the U.S. retain the smartest people (because those employees would be in higher positions), regardless of the cost.

For every Google there were 10 others that failed with the same idea. But investors took risk with those 10 other companies. Are Indian investors ready to invest like that? I don’t think so. We are a mostly risk averse society and nothing breakthrough happens without taking massive risks with low chance of success. Up until the early 90s, India and China had similar population and similar economies.  


China worked to modernize and liberalize.  India chose to do as little liberalization as possible, maintained beaurocracy and inefficiency.  The mast basic of tasks is a pain the ass to do in India.  Chinese government strongly encourages and supports business and India does not.  


Despite much cheaper labor, India is losing big and even when Chinese companies are looking for cheaper labor, they rather go to Vietnam or even Kenya instead of India.

While a lot of Chinese students are from well-off families a lot of Indian students aren't. 
Chinese students are their to learn and gain expertise and then they decide to possibly immigrate or go back since going back is not a harakiri for them. 
For Indian students primary aim isn't education, its getting fat paying job so they can pay off loans, have fat wedding, show-off with leased BMW/Mercs and just stay there doing 9-5.

Capital market is very weak in India. In United States the most under appreciated aspect of capitalism is that financiers innovated how to productize debt and equity.  Bad debts are mixed with good debts to provide cushion to the capital market. 
Also, institutions and the constitution is unforgiving on folks who default on their debt. Even billionaires like Vijay Mallya couldn’t get a pass on debt payback. There are numerous cases where founders who went broken were threatened to be killed if they somehow didn’t payback their lenders.

1. Quality of life in china is not as fucked up , as India - read potholes , pollution , incompetent governance 
2. There is not barrier of reservation which stymies talent 
3. The politicians there are not in cahoots with the big industrialists 
4. Corruption is very less in China compared to India 
5. The govt. spends systematically on R&amp;D, unlike India where the Minister berates startups why they are not making chips and why are they selling soaps ? Without an iota of shame of creating a decade long void of investment in R&amp;D
6. Because the society is not morally dead in china, whereas in India cheating / fraud starts right from school and has been ingrained in each and every citizen . I swear 99% of people on reddit have never gotten off their living room couches. One, just one, visit to ANY government office in India is enough to make even the most hardcore seasoned entrepreneur give up and go to singapore. The amount of bribes to start a business will eat away the first 2 years of profit, and the quarterly harassment by license raj officials makes people forget about doing anything here. Now this H1B bill which people are saying will magically bring people back to India to set up businesses here - big f\*king joke. If it was easy to set up a business here, no one would travel half-way around the world to get picked on and made fun of for accent and body hair etc. Most of that crowd is people who tried here, gave up and decided to choose lesser of two evils. I know plenty of people who came back here after 5 years to try and set up companies, but gave up in 6 months and went back. Same will happen with the people who are “returning”. First of all, the best and brightest in places like Microsoft, Google etc. are NOT coming back. The big 7 will lobby for an exemption and will get it. It’s only those chunnu-munnu balaji software systems ltd. crowd that will come back because their body shop operating out of a dingy michigan warehouse couldn’t secure an exemption. These guys will run away to europe or australia because their objective was to leave, no matter which country. The very few 0.01% who have the inherent capability to do something good will try for 6 months and then relocate to singapore, because even einstein can’t do much if you give him a broken calculator and diluted chalk that breaks upon touching a board. There’s a reason einstein could do his best work only after going to US. We have stopped wasting our time trying to get Indian clients(Pvt sector, Govt, Defense)

Here is a honest feedback from the startup you said everyone should be doing!

I have attended quite a few RFQ's by Meity. At a few sessions, I said, "We have the experience and capability to develop the chip as per your specification. We will incur a NRE cost of XX Crores. How many chips are you planning to buy?" I either got a "you build it then we will decide" or "we wont buy, you go and find whether there is a market for this"! No startup is going to burn 2 years and 10-20 crores on a product which has no buyer and no market.

At one of the meetings organized for startups by the defense sector, a speaker from govt spoke for over an hour on how they are facing difficulty with a particular tech. At the end of his speech I met him and informed him that "we have solved some of his pain points for our clients, what would be the best way to engage with his department?"

When I say this to a person from private sector, I immediately get a few questions about what I think about the problem statement, followed by a meeting schedule to discuss the matter further...

From your defense genius I got a long rant on how they are not dumb, they are bright people capable of solving their problems, who have been working day and night and have not seen their families for months... They do not need help from private sector(it seems they were forced to seek help by govt hence that meeting) and will eventually solve it on their own! If your people are not open for help why waste our time holding a 2 days conference for PPP?

Since you can neither give contracts not facilitate it, the best thing you can do is ease of business and buddy you have failed in this too!

My startup is eligible for certain tax breaks, Your department sat on my application for over 2 years and returned it to me last week asking for "Additional documents" with a note that after submitting the documents my application will again go to the back of the queue(i.e. another 2 years)! Within a few hours of your rejection I got a call from a "facilitator" who promised me quick and guaranteed results if I use their service for "preparing my documents"!

Due to your tax laws, I end up paying 2X the amount (compared to my competitors outside India) for importing compute resources, EDA Licenses, equipment and raw material!

If I need to import a 10$ wireless device for my lab, I need to pay INR 10,000 to WPC to get approval to import it!

Every year your govt creates a new compliance (tum sab chor ho! yeh naya document submit karo andWe will use our Dumb intelligence app on your application to determine whether you are a chor or not!) I need to weed through a compliance calendar with over 300 items and identify compliance that are applicable to me and follow them! Sala entrepreneur sal bhar kam karega ya tera faltu form bharega?

Some of your faulty portals have eaten up tens of thousands of my company's money and until I go and meet your babu they will not initiate a refund!

Buddy instead of blaming others focused on your job (Good governance) and got out of our way, we entrepreneurs have the capability to build world class products.

*This is just a small example of how things work in our country. Until we clean our own house and bring business friendly policies, we arnt heading anywhere.*

No companies want to setup in india, nor will they as told by Charlie monger, other big investors as it's too beurocratic. It means that "the government changes compliance for companies too often, they will end up spending all the time and resources on complying with the government rather than innovation" was said by suzuki, and other japanese companies who want to continue seeing the success of Maruti 800/ subsequent products. Even if you want to startup in india as a citizen it's too difficult, only people with contacts can somehow manage, which is completely contradictory to democracy. Unless we learn and change it isn't possible. China on the other hand invests a lot on self manufacturing and giving good programs to companies to setup in their country, they make companies buy steak in startups of their country as well so that way they have incentives in their country. Germany has programmes in colleges where they can intern in their top companies so they can hire and train people, it's well integrated, unfortunately there isn't anything close to such ideas thought of by people here. Government is too corrupt

I've known a large number of competant H1B visa holders from the EU and Asia over the last few decades but no where else comes to mind. Too many corrupt holders, elsewhere.

China actually respects intellectuals in the field unlike India where college is a glorified job search simulator. Lots of Chinese students are given incentives and scholarships to study and research science and come back to help the country. India does not have a leadership anywhere as good as China’s to even start this system. Modi would rather exploit the Indian labor to help his billionaire friends make the bubble bigger than actually helping the working class
