I decided to watch abc's evening world news in the days following the ceasefire. Every night half of the episode was spent tear jerking the harrowing experiences they endured since the 15 9-11s that happened on Oct. 7. No real mention of anything the Palestinians endured. 

Then just a couple days after ABC reported to their viewers that Hamas has violated the ceasefire by not returning all of the hostage bodies and that consequently Israel is again blocking aid from reaching Gaza. Did they mention that these bodies are hidden under the rubble Israel created? No. Israel knew that it was not a reasonable expectation before the treaty was even signed. 

They also showed an image of Hamas executing some people over God knows what.  Did they mention that many of the bodies of Palestinians returned in the ceasefire exchange showed obvious signs of torture and execution? No. 

But most importantly did they ever mention that Israel violated the ceasefire long before any of this? Every single day since it was signed?  Mere hours after it was aigned? This is just how ceasefires work when Israel is involved. Look at their ceasefire with Lebanon. They've attacked Lebanon literally hundreds of times.  Full bombing campaigns. Israeli contractors are still demolishing buildings in Rafah and one of their vehicles went over a planted explosive device -planted by Israel previously- but they wanted an excuse to break the ceasefire so they pinned it on Hamas.   

Bear in mind the ceasefire has been broken by Israel 47 times with 38 people killed already. Also Israel’s demolitions are a breach of the ceasefire.   

It seems very intentional Israel continues its demolitions more debris and destruction the dead hostages are buried even further down and the war continues until dead hostages are returned.

I think that while Hamas has the west’s support, and pretty much the support of all Muslim people, the governments of Middle Eastern countries are another story. I think there is likely many back door deals between Israel and other countries that has likely isolated Hamas, military speaking. At least for now. It seems the custom to condemn Israel to the public but to also deal with them in secret.

I think Trump’s deal was also to call their bluff. The very generous perception from the west is Hamas doesn’t want to kill Jews. They only want a state. If they were to deny a two state solution while it was on the table, and to continue to allow the genocide of their people (which they don’t even really care about as a Hamas rep said 70% of the Gazan population are refugees and not their responsibility), then I think people would question what their true aim was.

It’s been brought up how Palestinians have rejected multiple peace deals. Many reject this. But if Hamas rejected this time then it would definitely be true.

Don’t forget that soon Fatah and Hamas will have to battle it out for the West Bank (and potentially Jordan as well if Israel is forced to withdraw from the entirety of the West Bank leaving the border to Jordan to figure out). Public opinion in the West Bank is favourable towards Hamas considering Fatah hasn’t run the place effectively and considering his withdrawal from attacking Israel publicly in a while. The West thinks Hamas will step down and just hand Gaza over to Fatah and that Abbas will step down and hold elections but they’ll be holding their breath for either. Regardless of the situation, Israel will likely be forced into some variation of an occupational position again and public opinion will further decline. The plan likely won’t succeed. 

Secondly, Hamas will be told that they can leave peacefully as an insurance policy for them to step down and de-arm (which they won’t do without assurances that they can leave Gaza), and so wherever they do go, you can be that they’d still be operating in other ways most likely.

Hamas' allies were already crushed militarily by both Israel and the US. The only thing that was holding them up was Qatar, but now that support is going away thanks to Trump's negotiations with Qatar. Hamas is just trying to get whatever it can get, even if that means just surviving. Will Hamas continue to stay in Gaza? Maybe, but compared to where they were prior to Oct 7 2023, they're significantly weakened and in a far worse position now than they were back then. No amount of punishment they receive is gonna make up for the pain and suffering that they've caused since the beginning of the war, but there's a valuable lesson that they've been taught. The decision to go to war with Israel didn't earn them anything and only set them back. They're gonna remember this and, hopefully, not make the same mistake again.

Always think of Hamas as just trying to hurt Israel as much as possible. They don't care about Gazans, and they don't care about their own lives.... so the way I think of it... Although Hamas started this war, the world views Israel far more negatively and lost the support of tons of people based on their alleged actions and alleged genocide that's portrayed. If you get a ton of people to believe Israel is genociding Palestinians, and you don't have the physical ability to actually end Israel yourself, then how do you hurt Israel any further? 2 things.

In their charter, they've said that they don't believe in peaceful negotiations. By agreeing to one, it shows alleged growth in the organization, and they might make a play to try and stay in power or reorganize into a new organization to keep their fight going.

Secondly, as always, Israel has to release far more prisoners than Hamas has to release hostages. If Hamas is truly close to being deployed troops wise, these are reinforcements. Especially since they asked for some of the actual terrorists that went into Israel on 10/7.  Why would you specifically ask for those who the world could confirm did horrible terroristic acts if not to re-strengthen your personnel. It may no longer be Hamas per se, but they could fold into a new organization with terrorists with experience. Meanwhile, Israel still has that stain publicly from their alleged negative actions in this war.

If Hamas continued this war as it went, what would it actually gain? If a lot of the world has turned on Israel already, then what does it serve to continue to fight when you're so close to being defeated?

Many reasons but I think the key change was actually in regards to core allies to Hamas. The attack on Qatar by Israel appears to have caused some more changes and other arabic or arabic-like countries seem to prefer options towards peace sooner, so they probably put pressure on Hamas. I am not sure we'll ever know the real reason(s), but this to me would seem the most plausible explanation. It also probably was determined BEFORE Trump babbled about "a deal", e. g. negotiations that did not went public in the last weeks.

Other comments convinced me - and trigger warning for using human lives as bargaining tools- they don’t feel they can realistically keep the living hostages alive longer, their use is running out of time, so this is the last best deal (where they are now) to use the leverage of those hostages to get anything. I think they're most likely just stalling, they were desperate for a break in the military pressure. Right now they're rearming and resupplying forward areas and likely shuffling hostages around. Their leaders are digging deeper holes and their PR teams are dreaming up new ways to blame Israel for the hostilities that are about to resume.

Well, they haven’t returned all of the hostages yet and I have a suspicion that they aren’t coming to the negotiating table in good faith. This is technically phase 1 and the next phase is for Hamas to disarm. It doesn’t seem likely they will do that and I think both sides know. 

I have a theory that probably means nothing and I’m probably wrong but I feel like they’re doing this to try and embarrass Trump. Which the fact that he’s parading around and acting like he needs a Nobel peace prize and this is some legendary moment where peace in the middle could be achieved is so mind numbingly stupid. All Hamas has to do is mess up the deal and now we’re right back to where we were before the deal. Like I said I could be wrong and I hope I am but it really seems like Hamas has no incentive to follow through with this deal and furthermore I doubt very seriously they just had some change of heart because of Trump. But they've been willing to see their own deaths and many many deaths of their communities, so I don't think it's that. I think it's Qatari pressure on Hamas leadership in Doha, as relayed from Trump. Maybe Trump said, "Hey Hamas leaders, Bibi has shown you he will kill you in Qatar if I let him. Maybe get your guys in Gaza to give up the hostages, and I'll get Bibi to leave you be." The guys in the tunnels don't have much to live for and they dream of being martyred heroically. The reasons why Hamas gave the hostages were that even though both Hamas and Israel signed on to a ceasefire Agreement on January 19. Israel kept on attacking, so the hostages provided no deterrence at all.  Better to trade the hostages for Palestinian prisoners and get something.

Coz they won. This war wasn’t about military win. The ground was prepared long time ago. They knew how exactly trigger IDF to attack Gaza full power. For 2 years tension was building, misinformation was spreading. This summer it reached boiling point. Everyone obviously forgot about 7/10 (same way as everyone forgot about Ukraine), but poor Gaza somehow still hot topic and only gets hotter. Hamas had no choice. The three main sponsors include Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. 

Egypt needs more aid from the US. They also want assurances that Hamas won’t end up in their country. 

Turkey badly needs sanctions lifted and weapons. 

Qatar was scared shitless after the failed Israeli strike. 

Trump and Bibi used the opportunity to unite them all against Hamas. Hamas is isolated and for now that will have to do. 

Meanwhile Egypt will get more aid, and Qatar got an apology and executive order. Turkey we shall see….

Because it ends the war. Essentially, it is a deal to release and exchange hostages in return for an end to the war. The rest and the details of it, Hamas has always been willing to be flexible. The most important thing for Hamas in any deal was the end of the war. I mean, what purpose did the hostages even serve them ?? I don't think they provided the safety they thought they would: Israel still bombed indiscriminately regardless, without any care if they might be killing their own hostages. So it really makes no difference to Hamas returning them, as they weren't serving the purpose they had, at least partly, hoped they would. The other part is exchanging them for hundreds of Palestinian hostages (although in total, there's over 10,000 Palestinians being held in military prisons without charge or trial–many of these are children), so might as well use the hostages for this now.

First, massive pressure from Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye.

Second, their initial strategy to force Israel to end the war in exchange to *some* hostages and then at their leisure negotiate over the rest without a military threat, failed. Israel publicly refused any partial deals; at the same time, it was clear that hostages give Israel legitimacy to continue the war for as long as necessary. No matter how much people around the world might have been upset about so-called "genocide", it also became clear war won't end till hostages are returned.

Thus, hostages became less of an leverage and more a liability.

See, in war and in diplomacy it is often well constructed bluff which decides the winner. You're saying that Israel couldn't continue this war for years more because of threat of international sanctions. Perhaps you're right. But the message Israel's government was sending to the world and to Hamas was "we don't care about anyone, we have support from Trump and it's good enough, this war is about our future existence and no amount of pressure will make us stop". Was it a bluff? Perhaps. But at the end, it worked.

Hamas in known for breaching agreements far more than what the claims about Israel doing. Simply put, Hamas is a terrorist organization with an agenda to destroy Israel. Their best card is hostages, dead or alive. Why would they try and give them back so fast? Moreover, it's highly likely that they know the whereabouts of all the bodies, but decided to lie about half of them.

This goes hand in hand with disarmament. Hamas disarming themselves is like asking ISIS to stop and try creating their "Islamic state", driven by extremism.

Conveniently ignoring that the Israeli defence minister vowed to continued bombing Gaza before the ceasefire even took effect and whose soldiers murdered at least 6 Palestinian civilians yesterday as they attempted to return to the ruins of their homes.

Those are clear breaches of a ceasefire that Israeli propagandists and the media have largely ignored just like OP here with this misleading headline.
