He was actually violating federal law that guarantees forgiveness after 25 years of repayment on federal loans enrolled in the IBR plan.  The Dept. of Education was deliberately stalling on granting eligible people this forgiveness and a teacher's union filed a lawsuit a few months ago about the issue and it finally scared the Orange Rodent enough to start processing the loan discharges.

It never should've been stopped in the first place. They were/are facing a class action lawsuit over this. Also, this is not some liberal forgiveness plan but merely the forgiveness people have been entitled to under existing IDR laws. The forgiveness that comes after 20/25 years for IBR.

This is reinstating a previous program for people who having making payments for 25 years?  Sure it’s more moderate than I like as a policy in general, but it also seems reasonable.  At that point it’s clearly predatory lending and interest payments have more than covered the principal id bet.

A better option for reducing student debt would be for public college education costs to be CAPPED two years of average salary for the graduates. If the costs are higher, than they should be covered by the institution rather than government (aka taxpayer) funded guaranteed student loans. 

It makes no sense to borrow $150-200 at public universities and $250-350K at private universities to get a teaching degree in states where the average starting teaching salary is $47K. It makes no sense to borrow the same amount of money to earn a degree in "Social Justice," "African American Studies," "Latin American Studies," "LGBTQ Studies," "Animal Rights" (seriously...it's an actual degree at some schools), etc. Most of these humanities majors have a nearly-100% unemployment rate in that "field." In other words, those graduates work in something other than the field that they've graduated with a degree in.

As someone who paid off his student loans, I support this. Student loans are extremely predatory, you cant declare bankruptcy on them, and you take them on as a kid before your brain is even fully formed.

One return to the interest rate that was originally set on student loans in the 70's when they were created. Which was simple interest on the original principal. During the late 90's and early 00's they moved to compound interest. Which then accelerated the debt anyone is paying. Then you had the predatory refinancing programs, which misrepresented how the interest rate would be established.

Combined with colleges and universities being able to add courses that are nothing but indoctrination for the far left and insuring an in flood of funds that was used to pay for speaking engagement for the politicians who okayed the increases in loan amounts and Pell grants.

The system is corrupt. Folks need to walk away from the degree as it is mostly useless.

What’s the justification for this? Why are student loans different from any other kind of loan? You borrow money, then you pay it back. It’s not complicated. 

If the school you want to go to is too expensive, then go somewhere you can afford. 

Youth doesn’t excuse you from the consequences of your decisions. College students are still adults and should be treated as such.

I first applied for thr discharge on July 22nd, and then they gave a different date saying I they received my application on July 29th and I have been waiting patiently,  but then today when I checked on the website it shows October 10th now! Congrats!  Can someone help me understand the process better?  I believe I got the green banner people are referring to ("Congratulations! You have satisfied your obligation, and no additional payments are required for this loan.")  But now I just have to wait to get this letter/email confirming the loans are forgiven? I stopped my auto payment on Mohela, but I can't get a hold of anyone there to explain my situation.

 I got mine forgiven/paid off in February.   They sent me a email and also mail, I checked my account and it's paid in full and no balance at Nelnet. I was in IBR but I have been paying for over 20 years. I'm so happy!!!!!!!! Also I had to go online to my account to verify my mailing address (which is funny because they mailed my bill all the time) so I can get back a refund on the payments I have been sending when the govt. officially said that my bill was forgiven a certain date.  I got back 6 months worth of payments.

I too have been informed that I qualify for loan forgiveness, but I received a letter from Mohela a few days ago explaining my “upcoming payments” and a break down on the interest I will pay over the next 15 years?!?!

Of course I have called a been put  on hold 3 times for at least 45 minutes before I had to hang up and carry on with my life!

Wish I could get an investigative reporter to ask the questions I have for Mohela, the government , etc!

So you can get all your student loans that aren’t private forgiven 1 time. You can contact FASFA to not forgive them right away. So that you can complete your degree. Now the forgiveness will only work on all student loans under your name. So if you have a parent PLUS loan with a family members student debt, then they would get forgiven too. Just FYI,I got notification in January of my loan forgiveness, and they were JUST removed last week after keeping on top of it. So it may take a while, I would put in for it a few weeks after starting your final semester that way your current loans will be covered by the P&amp;T Loan forgiveness.

I’m going through a hard time with this… they discharged my loans, I caught it early as I was still in school. I took the summer off CRI discharged them again, once again I caught it and since May 2025 they have not reinstated my loans. Even after sending CRI all the documentation that my loans have been reinstated. I’m still zeroed out in the system and my school is giving me a hard time about pulling out more loans.
