Tuesday’s flare-up was one of the most serious since the Oct. 10 ceasefire announcement by Israel and Hamas, which US President Donald Trump has touted as the first phase of a deal stabilizing the war-ravaged Palestinian enclave and other regional fronts.

Earlier, Trump defended Israel’s strikes and said he was confident the truce would remain in place.

The IDF is enforcing the "Lebanon Model" the opposing side (h-mas in this instance) will still violate the ceasefire (failing to return Israeli hostages' bodies and killing soldiers) so the IDF will periodically kill as many targets they have locations for.  Especially with during the ceasefire these people are coming out of their holes and using phones they'll continue to build a real time locations of lots of people worth finding.  So when the IDF are given an opportunity to retaliate they'll have a lot of good targets.  It isn't as good as h-mas just giving up their weapons and surrendering but it's still better than returning to open war.

Even if the IDF soldier's killing was caused by carried out by Hamas and it's not clear that it was, the response was indiscriminate and disproportionate and it's so exhausting that even saying something as simple as that is controversial these days.

Hamas knows the consequences and chooses to attack anyway. I’m not saying that everything Israel does is great but the ball is firmly in Hamas’s court right now. It is up to them whether this ceasefire will hold or not, but it feels like it can survive with Qatar and Turkey as covert backers which lessens the pressure for them to disarm and allows them to drag it out by delaying returning the bodies of murdered hostages. The fact that Israel has not restarted the war after the hostages have come back  shows that they do not want endless warfare. No one does, least of all Gaza’s civilians.

1. Hamas' rhetoric and actions all point to the fact that they are likely to try to continue to remain armed and to maintain control over the Gaza strip once Israel has left, which goes against the long term agreement of the ceasefire. This is a non negotiable on Israel's part. 

2. Likewise, Netenyahu's government is supported by two far right parties that insist that the war is continued, and are likely to collapse Netenyahus government if he doesn't. Coupled with corruption charges that await Netenyahu as soon as hes not Prime Minister, he is all the more likely to to try to continue the war.

L:ong story short, is that neither side really expects the ceasefire to hold

First of all, Al-Jazeera has some serious credibility problems because their "coverage" effectively changes with the mood of the Qatari monarchy. Western sources are much better - e.g. Associated Press.

Second, there have been small-scale violations by Hamas, and Israel engaged in reprisals to punish those violations. This is a perfectly legitimate means of enforcing ceasefires, paradoxical as it may sound. 

All in all, the ceasefire is holding, but there are open questions about how long it'll last, and if the Arab countries will step up so they can finally deal with other geopolitical problems - esp. a dangerous international menace by the name of Iran.

Answer: Within 72 hours of the ceasefire start Hamas was so return all living hostages (20) and murdered hostages (28).  In exchange Israel was to return 2,000 prisoners. 
One living hostage said he was kept with the bodies of the dead hostages. Hamas has not returned the bodies instead they ‘find one more’ every few days.  This is the first break of the ceasefire. In exchange for 20 hostages, Hamas was given 2,000 prisoners who had been serving g life sentences for suicide bombing and attacks on Israelis. Answer: Isreal broke the ceasefire to continue the genocide in Gaza, basically a return to what was already going on. Isreal has the advantage in the "war" as they still have the support and resources of the US, and Gaza is being decimated without any real chance of fighting back, especially since they're facing famine from the repeated blocking of aid or using aid as an opportunity to shoot starving civilians from Isreal. 


What comes next? The details of the ceasefire are extensive but there were some large concessions made by both sides, including the return of the hostages (from the event that started this war) and conversely on Israel’s side returning Gazan prisoners and terrorists in addition to a cessation of military activity.

At this time, Trump stepped in and announced that the ceasefire was still in effect and demanded both sides adhere to it. As of now, the ceasefire is in effect but very fragile. It is very evident that Israeli leadership wants to abandon the ceasefire and the world is on edge about it.
