I am not familiar with the case in question,  but generally the Church does not conduct exorcisms until the individual has been carefully vetted to not be suffering mental health issues.

I have seen this movie and many others, as an ex witch, the demonic has never been a question, there are demons. Watching and learning about this case it 100% was demonic posession, what legal grounds the demons had, i dont know. To be honest, as an ex witch, my own grandmother was a catholic church go-er but also did witchcraft and therefore was a witch, she would do witchcraft on me and do cleansing rituals and more. So, the legal right that demons had was witchcraft in my blood line. It is very possible that this girl had either had family that had done witchcraft, possibly came in contact with a cursed house or cursed object. Now, as for her death, the demons were relentless, I think she tried to fight so hard... unfortunately, these demons did not come out by prayer, or by fasting and afflicted her to the point where she was consumed. Much like in martyrdom, a believer is tortured until death, though Ms Anne suffered greatly, I truly hope that her testimony of battling these demons could have been a becon of light for the demonically posessed and somehow seen her case and sought deliverance and exorcism too. 
 There are many things that follow demonic posession (i know as I have been demon innabited not by one or two but hundreds.. not kidding) and I needed extensive deliverance and then I was born again and sealed with The Holy Spirit, so now I am only afflicted by oppressing forces but not posessed. Spiritual warfare is VERY intense for someone like me because satan and his demons have normalized a lot of witchcraft and I expose the tactics but that being said, I am not posessed as a believer cannot be POSESSED the way an unbeliever can. Now, demonic posession, strange things begin to happen, demons travel in packs, they cause pests to come into your home, curse your things, your food, your dwelling, your mind, it is spiritually but demonic posession does manifest in the natural. Demons can cause things to move, doors to open, fly infestations, rat infestations, strange events like objects moving, things flying, things falling, footsteps, in the worst cases the temple (our bodies) begin to be scratched/hit/hurt... and its so disturbing, demons are known to cause a person to walk backwards, contorted, they speak in (demonic tongues) or ancient languages, they can cause beds to levitate, people to levitate, they can crawl up walls and ceilings. They do in fact turn things upside down and can cause people to be sick and tormented. But they are not stronger than God, and demons tremble at the very word of Jesus Christ. And that is such a comforting thing.

Personally I do believe that it is possible to be possessed by demons. However I disagree with the notion that a true believer can be possessed. How could one have the one true God's spirit dwelling in their heart and also have demons inside them. 

The very idea that this could happen is to say the demons can over power the Spirit of God. This simply is not possible.

I’m posting this from an alt since it’s a bit doxxing, but I actually was in Mehlman’s class at UQ and interacted with him a number of times. I certainly didn’t know him well enough to comment on his, erm, “dating habits” but he was definitely a weird dude.

I am really glad you posted this. My students really like some of his materials, which are free, and I agree he has a good way of modeling thinking through certain things (like arrows questions) but when they ask why I do not mention him in my resources/study guides, I tell them that he has problematic ideas about women, has published a "book" on dating (pick-up artist type stuff) and has fetishistic ideas about women who are Asian. I typically say that these things make me unable to recommend him. He is a deeply upsetting personality. I am saving this post, to give me even more rationale when a student asks why I do not encourage using his resources. Thank you.
