I imagine COP30 with end the way most COPs end - with a watered down package that won't go nearly as far as needed, will be recognised as such, but be shrugged off as 'better than nothing I guess'.

For a long time now COP has just become a place for fossil fuels companies to meet and swap contracts. I imagine there is probably lots of cigars being smoked, and cocaine snorted off hookers lower backs going on as well. All the while the people that actually want change are ignored while outside protesting because they're not welcome inside.

I haven't checked if an oil minister is running the meeting this year. This is COP 30 and all of the previous COP meetings have amounted to very little meaningful action. The people that worked so hard at previous meetings years ago have all just been told NO to their proposals and recently Trump has just stood up at the UN meeting and told the world that climate change is the "New Green Scam" with little blow back in the US.

The fact that the UN let oil ministers run two COP meetings illustrates how ridiculous the whole charade has become. I feel sorry for all the hard working people that contribute to these meetings but they must also be frustrated as hell.

So what's the answer? May as well travel and party on the taxpayers dime and enjoy the ride. Not a lot of taxpayers in North America believed in climate change during the early COP meetings because they were so cleverly conned by the fossil fuel entities including the over 140 organizations associated with the Kochtopus network that were very well funded to lie to them.

There would probably not be a lot of guilt felt by people that organize and attend these meetings because they have not been successful due to the dirty, corrupt playing field and the fact that most people just didn't care in the critical early COP years when change needed to start happening.

May as well have some good times after 29 years of being ignored.

Controversial view, but surely if addressing climate change is all about phasing out fossil fuels, which i believe is the case, then we should want to have 1/25th of delegates representing the fossil fuel industry, because it is that industry we need to change? They have to be represented, as it is all about them. Do you really think it would help to kick out Saudi Arabia from COP, for example?

The real idiocy is people flying all over the world for these type of conferences when video conferencing has been a thing for 20 years. They are just junkets and a lot of deals and money changes hands with climate concerns as the smokescreen.

Was there ever a point where COP wasn’t theatre?  How many countries have actually followed through on their commitments?  It feels like they go, nod their heads that this is a problem, and forget all about it when they leave.  Maybe less head nodding this time around.

Everyone's talking about the US not showing up to COP30, **but the real story is who DID show up**: 

* **Brazil sent 3,805 delegates.** Three thousand eight hundred and five. For a two-week conference. That's not a delegation, that's a small town getting a free holiday to the Amazon. 
* **Nigeria (749), DRC (556), Chad (528) -** countries that rank amongst the world's most corrupt on Transparency International's index are sending delegations larger than most European nations. Funny that. 
* **The top emitters? China sent 789.** The world's largest current polluter can apparently only spare 1/5th of what Brazil needs. The UK? 210 and seemingly less invested in "climate action" than Chad. 
* **But here's the surprise Latvia asked if they could just Zoom in (entirely reasonable), were apparently told no**, then registered only 2 delegates. Meanwhile, countries with GDP per capita 1/10th of Latvia's are sending hundreds.   

   
**The real scandal isn't that America didn't show up.** It's that 56,000 people felt the need to fly to Brazil to have conversations that could've happened on Teams. 

  
It's that the "climate emergency" apparently requires Brazil to allocate party badges to NGOs to inflate their numbers. It's that cruise ships were moored in Belém to house delegates - floating hotels burning bunker fuel - for a climate conference. 

The US didn't attend because Trump's honest about not caring. Everyone else showed up to pretend they do whilst running the world's most carbon-intensive networking event.
