Really heartbreaking. Its unfathomable for a child, who has to go through so much turmoil before taking such a drastic step. I don't think it was the heat of the moment decision for the kid, I think torture was going on for several days/months before taking his own life. Teachers involved should bear the consequences (they should feel the same agony) as they failed to see state of mind of young kid. Lot of strength to the parents.

While I have absolute sympathy for the child involved and his family, the teachers also deserve a chance for the other side of the story to come out. We do not know the state of mind of the child was in whether it be from his home and typically in these cases the family might be involved as well. Just because rumours are loud doesn’t mean the respect should disappear.

I went to IIT, while being from ST category so I can completely correlate with his situation. My first semester at IIT was one of the darkest time I can remember. Constantly being ashamed of my identity, and hiding my full name in case somebody found out, like I was a criminal. But I had basically no choice. I remember we had compulsory counsellings session and for the first time I went there, after a few minutes of talking I just broke down and cried my heart out. 

To anyone who's going through the same, just stay strong. Things do get better. I'm in my last semester now, and while life is not perfect, it is definitely much better.

I am from IIT myself and been here for sometime now...One thing I can say is there is no physical abuse on the basis of Caste but since there are over 1000 students in a batch then you'll meet all kinds of students and some may have that wrong mindset of judging someone on the basis of their caste.

Though Our College does have many measures in place to stop these kind of things from happening like SC/ST cell ( But do you really expect a 1st year student whose confidence has been shattered in pieces to believe a random stranger )

Freshmen students also get final year students as their mentors to which they can turn in any kind of problems but again many students may struggle with confiding in a random stranger.

Though personally I've never seen anyone discriminating on the basis of caste but I do believe we can do a lot better.

College officials will deny everything and will try to save the reputation, they don't give a shit about these short of incidents.

You should see the amount of kids in the JEE NEET sub misinformed about reservation and continue to complain about it. Without parents or schools talking/creating awareness about it, these kids will not understand why it exists and will continue to harass SC/ST students when they join a University.

Engineering degree, being the type of degree it is, does not have the scope of having the discourse on caste discrimination and the only way I see it could be countered is by having a mandatory caste sensitisation programme.

I went to BITS Pilani. It's considered as good as most IITs and better than the NITs. But it doesn't have reservation or management seats. Everyone who gets in either got in coz of their marks in their boards or their BITSAT scores. 

 Sure, the diversity was less compared to the the IITs. But nobody doubted that you don't deserve to be there. That you were smart enough. 

The problem isn't reservation. It is the way it is implemented in India. We explicitly give everyone a score and then give a seat to the guy with 50% while denying the one with 99%. It's designed to breed resentment.

It's tragic to see this but we should also see the other side as well. Imagine the situation of students who scored good marks in the exam but still couldn't qualify because they were General category. Wouldn't these General category kids be depressed and how many of these kids committed suicide? Nobody covers the exact reason, they just say "Examination pressure". But sometimes the real reason is they couldn't qualify even though they are good enough because of the reservation system. In no way, I am justifying this tragedy but the fault is in our reservation system. You just can't divide and then expect unity.

I believe there is a very minute distinction between - “what happened” and “how it has been interpretated”.

WHAT WAS INTERPRETED- Kid was discriminated against because of his caste.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED- kid was discriminated against because the UR IITians believe that SC/ST cat students have not made similar sacrifices, nor do they have similar merit.

UR IITians do not hate the harijan people as such. They despise the fact that they manage to share the same stage as them by sharing significantly lesser marks. For instance closing rank of IIT bombay for general cat students was around 3300, while for SC cat it was around 600, which is similar to general rank 10000+. It is just like how the people who get into FAANG by grinding their asses off would despise the diversity hires. The general category people will never see the people who qualified IITJEE from category as equals, whether within the college, or in the industry. They will be seen as inferiors, but not on the basis of their caste, but on the basis of their merit.

I am not justifying their behaviour. In these confusing times we live in I have pretty much lost the capability to distinguish right from wrong. I am just stating what the facts are.
