People in the past have given me broad answers like poverty or institutional conditions but it seems like Nigeria uniquely has some factors that see these kind of group kidnappings happen more often.

This is horrific.  But nobody seems to know who is doing this.  The AP said bandits and gangs of displaced herders have been carrying out attacks like this,  but that seems pretty extreme.  

Trump made pretty strong statements about attacks similar attacks on  christians in Nigeria earlier this week.  It's really dumb and conspiritorial, but with the US trying to balance between supplyingUkraine and trying to provoke a war with Venezula, I wonder if Russia is trying to provoke something like this to draw trump into another military intervention.  Wagner Group and other Russian mercinaries have been operating in Mali.  Could they be provoking these attacks?  Is it just a coincidence once of the villages attacked is called Maga?

Russia is already fighting a hybrid war with NATO.  I think they would want as little of the US's attention on Ukraine as possible.
