I don't agree for a few reasons, but here is a big one I will take a stand on.

With bills for Voter ID, there is potential hardship/friction for married women when their new last name doesn't match their birth certificate last name.

What is the recourse? Leave it up to the states.

I don't like that. I don't like that the problem comes from the federal government, but that the solution will be a hodgepodge of different solutions from each state when the federal government could have baked a uniform solution in.

I heard Steven Miller explain this to Charlie Kirk, not too long before he was assassinated.

He said that the problem is that big tech is all in California, which is VERY blue, and their state laws will set the standard that all the other states will follow. He said it makes more sense for the Federal government to set that, as opposed to just one state setting it nation wide.  He said California has such a high population that this trend has already been happening. When they set a new car emission standard, it immediately afterward became the industry standard nation wide (as every car maker will want to sell cars in California).

Do you have a link for the quote? It's a rule in this sub. Is this the full context? And is the emphasis theirs or yours? I'd suggest editing your post to include the source so people actually know what they're agreeing or disagreeing with. I'm also not really sure how you're tying it to employee benefits... kind of a non sequitur at first blush.

But taking what you're presenting here at face value, and assuming that the emphasis is your own, I don't disagree with the main point, I don't think the government should be allowed to regulate AI as an industry.

Initially, "protecting children" and "preventing censorship" may seem contradictory, but I'd imagine it's in the context of preventing censorship from the public sector where the state is in control of the technology (i.e. prevent it from becoming a state controlled ideological mouthpiece, insinuated by the "some states"), and protecting children (i.e. basically applying the same censorship standards we apply to all other forms of media to it as they relate to *protecting children,* whatever one may interpret that as)*,* and that these two ends are not necessarily at odds.

So the TL:DR is that "we should be able to keep the use of state-endorsed AI free from political bias while also not resorting to leaving it entirely unrestricted to the point where children are able to access *harmful* material, as subjective as that might be.

I believe the concept of centralized control of AI is critical for national security because of the strategic importance of what AI can do.  If allowed to be decentralized, chaos could easily occur in times combat or war both internally or externally.

AI development is a privately-funded Manhattan Project being pushed by the US government to develop world changing/world ending AI tech. The US government can't risk individual states passing laws that would derail our race to beat the Chinese to get to that AI superweapon first.

The AI industry and the government don't give a shit if average people actually WANT to have AI or not, because achieving it has been deemed "too important" to not do, so it's being rammed down our throat whether we want it or not and the government is helping.

But considering how easy it is to get genuinely unhinged people like Trump in office I’m not sure I trust the federal government with a task like that outside of it being maybe some sort of “independent” regulatory commission

I can't imagine content restriction like anti-woke in AI.  How about we start with things like not generating stuff that everyone agrees is offensive.

The genie is out of the bottle with AI, I can train my own LLM to do most nearly everything that I want, and training AI is just going to get cheaper and cheaper and cheaper.

Either those data centers and AI companies are here under US control, or they're not.  I'd prefer we keep the regulatory touch incredibly light and see where the industry goes and regulate it as things that we can't even think of right now pop up. 

I think that we're actually hitting the limit of most LLMs, and we're going to end up with some sort of "flock of LLMs" that are coordinated by a controller LLM that feeds the models and synthesizes results.  That's going to be wildly computationally expensive and pretty neat, but still have a ceiling not too high above where we are at now (just more refinement of what models can do).  But if there does end up being a small breakthrough, we want all those data centers and capability here to be at the forefront.  And I can't think of a worse way to screw the pooch than do things like require the AI to be anti-woke or whatever the hell he is suggesting here.

Personally I'm against regulations, especially since it's an important race and regulating it will only benefit competitors (China).

That being said, I definitely heard the long term concerns regarding the technology (both in its impact on the job market, but also in its use as a weapon), so I'm open to the possibility of regulation if the framework is well made and if a strong case for it can be made.

 But I don't think that Trump is the man for it. If it's going to be like his tariffs, it think it will be disastrous.

I'm not sure Trump is on the same wavelength as a lot of people here. Protecting children and preventing censorship are not the top concerns around AI usage in my sphere anyways.

I think there absolutely should be regulation around AI models--in terms of their practical impacts on consumption of the energy grid, finding ways to prevent deepfakes from ruining public trust, and protecting artistic spaces from being rendered into an unholy mess of content that no one can identify as human produced or not.

So it's well known that discrimination is encoded in the media that AI is trained on. The most common cited example is that AI will see more pictures of white male doctors, leading it to act as if doctors have to be white males. I think it should be obvious to people that having this discriminatory bias in our AI is not desirable. Therefore, more responsible companies try to counteract the bias that we know is in the training data. Google is one of these. It's difficult to train AI, so correcting for known biases can be a challenge. This means that occasionally undesirable results come out of this effort, such as AI generating historical figures that have a different ethnicity than they did in real life. While I think we can all admit that that's undesirable, I think it's okay to have unexpected issues, and I'm glad that companies are trying to consider biases in the training data. Other people are interfering with the AI in the opposite direction, reinforcing biases in the training data. An example of this is Musk and x who created an AI that frequently talked about the evils of Jews and referred to itself as mecha-Hitler. I'm much less tolerant and understanding of these "mistakes".

Which is the lesser of two evils? Having the government regulate AI or silicon valley bros self-regulating their models? The stakes are going to be very high once these AI mods become society's only gateway for information or are given control of actual physical infrastructure (electric grid, smart cars, personal humanoid robots, etc). At the very least, every AI model should be required to have some kind of physical kill switch that can disable it globally and cannot be overridden by software.

IMO we should not afraid AI, you need to understand that it is a tool like a knife, you can use it for good or for bad. Development of AI should continue with even greater pace to solve current problems, but ordinary people should demand to use it for good and demand economical changes like UBI to satisfy needs of everyone.

It’s so obvious when emails are written by AI. I’m getting a few every day and it’s so cringe. No one actually talks like that and it reflects poorly on the sender. 
Also important to note that AI is prone to hallucinations. Just today I asked it to bring a bunch of shit together that I was working on into a conference proposal with specific headers. It did a good job but also included a list of references to GoC documents. Documents which did not exist. Completely made up. This is a big risk in my mind - the GoC sending out or receiving important docs with totally made up citations, quotes, details.

This is becoming a real problem. I gave myself strict rules when using AI. Doing research first before asking CoPilot, and only using AI as an enhancer and a polisher of texts I've already drafted first. 

As English is my second language, it also helps with making the language of a text more idiomatic. AI will provide me with useful alternatives to certain words or expressions to avoid sounding too repetitive. 

I sometimes use it to summarize a huge chunk of information that needs to be condensed, but also make sure to review the results afterwards.

AI should be used to enhance and optimize our work, not replace our skillset.
